A thank you speech or appreciation speech prepared and given with sincerity means a lot to those you acknowledge.

When we achieve, we usually do so because others have helped. Your speech of appreciation is the gift or acknowledgment you give in return for what was given you.

When is a thank you speech appropriate?

Any time is good to say thank you! However, a more formal speech of thanks could fit any of these occasions.

  • for coming to my graduation, farewell, birthday, or retirement party
  • for the promotion
  • for the award
  • for coming to our wedding and your gifts, our engagement party, our 50th wedding anniversary
  • for coming to the opening of my new business...

Be prepared! Best practice guidelines

Generally the decision to leap to your feet and give a thank you speech is not spontaneous. You will likely have some forewarning and time to consider exactly what you want to say and who you want to mention.

Deciding on the content

Cover these three content areas and you'll be fine.

  • WHO are you thanking? Note their names in ranking order- the most important first.
  • WHAT are you thanking them for? Be specific rather than general. Naming what you are grateful for gives your thanks more meaning.
  • WHAT did their gift of time, expertise, encouragement, money... mean to you? Again, be specific. This is your chance to publicly give credit where it's due, to compliment, to praise. Take it.

Writing your speech

When you've sorted out who you wish to mention and what for, you are ready to begin writing.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

1. Introduction/opening

In your introduction or opening give the reason for the occasion and why it is you're going to thank everyone. What you say, and how you say it, will set the tone for the remainder of the speech.

Depending on the number of people on your 'thank you/appreciation' list and the amount of time you have, consider including a small story about the lead-up making this event possible. A well-chosen personal anecdote will always go down well because it lets those listening share your experience more deeply.

In the body of your speech, start at the top of your list of people to thank and work your way through it. Take care to give the most important people the most time.

For those whom you want to mention but don't have enough time to make individual acknowledgments consider grouping them according to function.

Example: "To Alex, Mary, Judy and Sam, thank you for making me remember to laugh. You helped me keep my sanity and perspective when the going was tough."

3. Conclusion

In the conclusion, summarize your main points and finish.

Sample thank you speech for receiving an award 

Here's a short sample thank you speech for you to see how it could be done. There are many ways covering the required content. This is one.

The person giving this speech is thanking an organization for giving him an award. 

It is 374 words long. When spoken it will take approximately 2 minutes + to deliver. That's about the right length. It's brief and covers everything needed.

As you read it through imagine hearing it out loud. 

Speech text

"Who's considered the incredible power of thank you?  Those two words express gratitude, humility, understanding, as well as acknowledgement.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues because I need to say all of that, and then some more.

Thank you for coming to share my being given the Fred Smith Award for Community Service. It's very humbling.

There's a phrase I'm sure you know: it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it's not a child that's been raised but awareness and a long needed community resource -  the  Parksville Community Literacy Center.  The village behind it and me, is you.

In particular thank you to my wife Marlene who has always understood and shared my conviction that communities are healthiest when its resources are equally shared, and that the ability to read underpins long term social and economic well being.

I know the hours I spent after work helping to establish our new Center tested her, especially when I was home late, again.

Remarkably she continues to support, and love me.  For that I will always be grateful.

Mary Hill, Catherine Beech and Matthew Fall from the Fred Smith Foundation – thank you for sharing the vision of an integrated community and for being so incredibly supportive. You understood what we were trying to achieve and helped make it possible. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and funds are deeply appreciated.

This award may have my name on it, but in truth it belongs to everybody who has worked to make the center a reality. Have you got a spare day or two? If I called out all those people we'd be here for quite some time! Instead, I'll simply say thank you. You know who you are.

The time and effort you've given ensures that the Parksville people who want it will have access to effective literacy programs and resources. That is a priceless gift.  As Nobel Peace Prize winner former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan said “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

Thank you for the award and thank you on behalf of all those who will cross that bridge to a brighter future."

Tips to help you get your thank you speech right

Many people make the assumption that once they've got the words of their speech sorted, they're set to go.

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

Giving yourself several  rehearsals, firstly by yourself and then in front of  friends or family, will help enormously. Click the link for detailed information about  how to rehearse effectively .

For the condensed and shortened version covering good rehearsal practice follow the points below.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues.  It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

  • to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
  • for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again. 

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few  more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone.  If it's too short, add more detail.  Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

Write the main points of your thank you speech on cue cards. Good notes will keep you on track while ensuring you cover everything you want to like, for instance, the name of every person you want to thank and why.

Thank Someone For a Speech or Presentation • Example Letters, Guides and Samples

Whether you are writing a thank you note out of duty or from your personal desire to express thanks, use a sincere tone. Mention specific details and show that the speech or presentation did have an effect.

How to write this thank-you letter:

  • Thank and compliment the speaker(s) or presenter(s).
  • Express congratulations for an excellent performance, and point out some of the more memorable parts. If the performance was only mediocre, simply thank the person(s) for participating in the program.
  • Close with a second compliment or expression of appreciation.

Example Letter #1

It seems everyone I talk to wants me to express appreciation for your inspiring presentation last week. Your years of research, your depth of understanding of user interfaces, and your ability to present the subject in such an interesting way produced one of the most memorable evenings in our group's history. I personally appreciated your approach to anticipating users' intents. The subject intrigues me, and I plan to learn more. Please consider adding our group to your annual speaking tour. You are always welcome at our conference.

Example Letter #2

Thank you for speaking to the Doe Alumni yesterday evening. We are grateful for the time and effort you took to share your thoughts and experiences with the Doe Development office.

Since we are entering a new growth phase on our campus, your comments were very timely. I believe we can benefit immediately from the methods you suggested for recruiting more members. Your enthusiasm is contagious, and we hope to use your suggestions in our next campaign. Thank you again for your contribution.

Example Letter #3

Thank you for your stimulating speech at last month's meeting of the Springfield Genealogical Society. Your comments were especially helpful to those doing research in the British Isles. Many members were at a standstill in their progress, and your talk seemed to provide much needed help. Thanks again for a truly memorable evening. We hope you can join us again.

Example Letter #4

Please accept our sincere appreciation for the outstanding presentation you made to the Springfield Women's Club about your experiences in China. It was very interesting to hear about your experience teaching in the university there. Your stories about your Chinese colleagues were fascinating. The slides you showed gave us a close look at the land, culture, and people that we couldn't have gained in any other way. Thank you so much for sharing your time and experiences with us. Thank you for taking the time to speak to our student body on the dangers of drug abuse. I felt that your remarks on prescription drug use and abuse were especially timely.

We truly appreciate parents like you who are willing to give their time and talents to enrich the lives of our young people.

I appreciated the remarks you made at the City Council meeting on Tuesday. You had clearly researched the subject, and many of us felt that yours was a voice of sanity in the midst of an emotional and divisive discussion. I wish that more people would try to see all sides of the issues that come up.

Thank you speech: how to perfect cordiality in a speech

Appreciation is the sincerest form of flattery. It makes people feel seen, and their efforts feel recognized.

Any leader worth their salt knows that the key to winning the loyalties of their team is regular appreciation.

Giving a thank you speech is not just good manners but gives an insight into your character. The acknowledgement only works if it comes from the heart and rings genuine. 

So, how do you give a thank you speech?

When is it appropriate to give a thank you speech?

In a company, at an award function, for friends and family, structure of the opening statement, thanking the speakers after the event, thanking the organization, thanking the organization team, have you missed anyone, concluding your thank you speech, mention people by name, positive ending, get it over with.

You don’t really need an occasion to thank somebody. However, in a more formal setting, there may be occasions that specifically call for it. The following are the times when it is most appropriate to give a thank you speech:

  • After getting a promotion
  • After celebrating an achievement
  • Appreciating your team after tackling a tough project
  • When receiving an award or recognition
  • When establishing a new venture

The list can go on endlessly as your field might have different occasions to give a vote of thanks. Make sure not to miss any opportunity to acknowledge the reasonable efforts of the people around you!

Things to keep in mind

When you’ve decided to give a thank you speech, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. This advice differs according to why you are giving a thank you speech and who is in your audience.

If your company is celebrating you for a milestone or recognition of hard work, make sure you don’t only talk about yourself.

Be generous with your words when talking about the company itself and the great work it does.

Elaborate on how much you enjoy working here and what exactly the company does the right to make it happen.

This will make sure your higher-ups feel appreciated for the work environment they’ve created.

If you are receiving an award by a third party for your work, make sure you adequately express how honored you will be selected.

It is always a good idea to highlight what a recognized organization it is and how you are happy to be a part of it.

If you’re giving a speech to thank friends and family, the setting is much more intimate. You can drop the formalities and talk about how special these people are to you.

As they have gone the extra mile to appreciate you, make sure you return the favor by talking about how lucky you are to have them and their support.

How to write a thank-you speech?

There is no need to beat around the bush with a thank you speech. You can simply start off by expressing gratitude.

An award or recognition means that you can simply open by thanking the company or organization for the honor.

You don’t need to come armed with quotes. In fact, that might actually seem much more disingenuous. Your opening statement also sets the tone for the rest of your speech.

Some factors might determine how formal or informal you need to be with your opening:

In a formal setting, it is best to keep it cordial. Assuming it is a suit and tie event, most people are dressed up and expecting you to keep it classy as well.

As such, we recommend you go for something along the lines of, “I’m so honored to be taking up this renowned stage. Words cannot express how grateful I feel to be the recipient of this award.”

An informal event can be anything from an intimate gathering of loved ones to anniversary parties of a broader range of friends.

In such an event, you can express yourself more freely and don’t have to hold back.

We suggest opening with something along the lines of, “I can’t believe my luck on being able to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I’m immensely 

grateful for each and every one of you and honored to be taking up the stage tonight.”

We have drafted a script for your opening statement. Feel free to customize it as per your needs.

Good evening, Distinguished [name], Honorable [name], Mr. Chairman, Respect Host/Hostess, and all our beloved guests.

It is my honor and privilege to have been given the opportunity to present a vote of thanks on this momentous occasion.

I am honored to represent [Company/Organization] on this prestigious [Event] stage.

I’d like to give a respectful nod to the entire [other supporting/sponsoring organization, team, crew, special guests present in the audience] that have stood behind me to make this possible.

My gratitude extends to all the speakers as well as organizers and hosts due to whom we’ve all come together on this eventful night.

Another possible scenario as a host is that you might have to thank the line of speakers that took up the stage during an event. Please find and customize the script for this as follows:

Let’s hear a big round of applause for [name speaker], His/her incredible delivery on [speech topic] leaves us all leaving this Event a little more aware. 

Pick up on the central theme and reiterate it as a reminder to the audience and to show the speaker that you were paying attention.

If there are more speakers, then follow suit and consider using these thank you examples:

I’d like to thank our second speaker [name speaker] for her take on [speech topic]. Her view on [central theme] was poignant and worthy of a big round of applause.

Furthermore, let’s also express a sincere appreciation for [name speaker] for gracing our stage with her strong opinions on [speech topic]. [Refer to central theme]

Following up, I’d like to thank [name speaker] for providing such an in-depth analysis of [speech topic]. [Reference]

We are grateful to [name speaker] for having the audience in stitches with her insightful yet light-hearted presentation. [Reference].

I would like to hear a resounding round of applause for [name speaker] for his/her inspirational speech that has surely revved up our drive to achieve more.

We are lucky to have the opportunity to listen to your craft and are leaving here today, all inspired by your beautiful words!

This script is for when you need to express appreciation for the organization that is holding this event. It is usually added to the end of a speech. Feel free to edit it as required.

And last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to [organization] for allowing us to use their beautiful venue.

Our utmost thanks to the logistic support that made this Event the smooth success that it has been. Our appreciation further extends to the technical team and organizers who’ve worked tirelessly for this [fun] evening. 

In the case of sponsors: I would also like to extend my thanks to [brand name] as well as [brand name] for their enormous cooperation in making this Event possible.

Mix and match these various styles so that it doesn’t get repetitive as you speak. 

As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Such is the case with this Event as well. There have been many people working for weeks across multiple group chats and meetings to make this possible.

Getting every detail right and lining up one after other fantastic speakers. Our biggest thank you to the dedicated organizing team for working on every tiny detail and helping create this amazing Event.

I cannot thank everyone enough for their involvement. Each and every one of you is to be credited for your dedication and the willingness to take on the completion outside the realm of their comfort zones! 

Read the room and decide the degree of the flair of formality that needs to be adjusted. People will be happy that their efforts are being recognized. Just make sure not to be too ostentatious about it.

The only thing that is worse than not being appreciated for your work is being singled out or left out.

Make sure you think hard about all the people that have put in their time and effort. Are you sure you haven’t missed anybody? How about anybody from the following list?

  • People who sent out invitations
  • Special guests who made time for the Event
  • People behind the technical arrangements
  • The team responsible for location hunting, stage setting and lighting
  • Any musicians or other performing entertainers
  • People in the catering team
  • People from the press and media who are covering the Event

Now all your thank you speech needs is a neat bow to tie it up cleanly. Try this on for size:

Mr. Chairman, ladies, and gentlemen, I would like to thank all of you for being a wonderful audience.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have such a delightful crowd presence. Once again, I’d like to give a big round of applause to all of the speakers for gracing our stage with their well-refined speeches. One last round of applause for all of us here, thank you very much!

Extra Tips to Keep in Mind

While we’ve covered most of our tips, sometimes the simple things can get away from us. And you know what they say, “Better safe than sorry.” So here they are:

A handy tip for appreciation versus criticism is this: When acknowledging people for their good work, always use their name, however, when handing out criticism in front of a crowd, try to generalize as otherwise, you will end up embarrassing people. 

Instead of simply thanking your team, use their names if possible in the given time limit. This will make your appreciation seem much more personalized.

Make a list of all the people you’d genuinely like to thank. If you have time, briefly talk about how they’ve helped you in your journey.

Emphasize how important they’ve been and how. Speak from the heart, and it will definitely ring true.

For phrasing, try something along the lines of:

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to give a special thanks to some of the amazing people without whom I cannot imagine standing up here on this stage. Name your supporters and give out your sincere thanks.

If you have extra time, you might want to add in a few lines to thank your supervisor or boss as well. It is customary to make sure they don’t feel left out.

It can be challenging to achieve this as we’re sure any crowd consists of so many people that someone is bound to feel left out.

Your goal is, don’t leave out any of the higher-ups and the important people. But don’t start listing just about everybody just because they are in the crowd. This can reduce the impact of your gratitude for people who have actually helped you.

You’ve given your thanks to so many people who’ve made you who you are. The stage has gotten quite emotional at this point, and your audience is looking at you.

You need to end on a high note. If you simply say your thanks and leave, it can feel incomplete and lacking.

Try to say something inspirational and uplifting. Suppose you’re being recognized for your work.

Graduation is an important event, and often, people like to use the occasion to thank everyone that supported them through school or a program. However, writing a good graduation speech can be challenging. Keep reading to learn how to write a graduation thank you speech , whether you are speaking to a large audience or simply making a toast at dinner.

Things You Should Know

  • Start with a 2-5 sentence introduction that engages your audience. Try using a rhetorical question, quote, or short anecdote.
  • Thank your friends, family, and teachers in depth in the body of your speech. This should be about 2-3 paragraphs.
  • Conclude your speech with 1-2 sentences that summarize everything you've said so far.

Brainstorming Your Ideas

Step 1 Make a list of everyone you want to thank.

  • If you are talking to close friends or family, address the people you are thanking by name.
  • Write down every person or group of people that comes to mind. You can edit this later on.

Step 2 Write down why you want to thank those people.

  • Be honest about why you are thanking someone.
  • The reasoning here can be very simple. For example, “My history teacher always made me laugh,” or “My mom woke me up every morning” are good reasons to thank someone.

Writing the Thank You Speech

Step 1 Write the introduction of the speech.

  • “What are you thankful for?” This is beginning with a rhetorical question, since the audience will not answer.
  • As Willie Nelson once said, "When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around." This is beginning with a quote.
  • “It was the first day of high school, and I stood outside the door of my first class, scared to go in. On the last day of high school, I left that same door feeling thankful.” This is beginning with an anecdote.

Step 2 Write the body of the speech.

  • For example, you can say, “I would like to thank my friends and family for always inspiring me when I felt hopeless.”
  • Another example is, “I want to thank Professor Z for helping me choose a major.”
  • The body of the speech comes immediately after the introduction.
  • Avoid insulting or offending those you are speaking to. Do not vent about problems or criticize others during this speech.

Step 3 Write the conclusion of the speech.

  • Another simple example is, “Once again, I am so lucky to have such great friends and family. Thank you.”
  • You can end on thanking someone by saying, “The last person I want to thank is my grandma. She was always there for me. Good night.”

Many of us fear expressing our thanks to others. We might worry that our efforts will be misinterpreted or make the person on the receiving end uncomfortable. Or we might struggle to find the right words to express how we feel. Here’s how to do it right.

  • Keep it genuine : The goal of expressing appreciation should be to let someone know how their actions have impacted you and/or others. If you have any other agenda, your message will not be authentic.
  • Share what you appreciate and why : Focus on the impact their actions had on you and explain both  what you appreciate and why . This will help the other person understand the reason you feel the way you do.
  • Send it : E-mails get lost and handwritten cards get saved. Write your message on a piece of paper, post-it note, or card and give it directly to the person. If you are at work, you can also leave it on their desk or in their “mailbox.”

We hear the term “motivational speaker” bandied about often. But whether someone has the gift of being able to get underneath people’s skin and inspire them is a big question. In fact, you probably have to experience it to believe it.

The great thing about formality is that all of us are linguistic chameleons to some extent. 

We might spend our time off responding to “what’s good?” from our close friends and then become ultra-formal when choosing a great message to write in a house guestbook . 

How formal you choose to be when thanking a guest speaker will come down to on a variety of factors.

First, it will depend on how close you are to the guest speaker. If you have invited an established politician that you have no relationship with to address a college graduation, you will want to err on the side of formality. 

However, if you have invited your friend the yoga teacher to come talk to your first-grade class about calming down when they get frustrated, you can be as informal as you want.  

It will also depend on how well respected or high profile the speaker is.

If you have invited a local businessperson in to address your Economics 101 class, you’ll thank them differently than if you have invited a former president to talk at a company retreat. Obviously, the former president will require you to be less casual. 

If you’ve considered your situation and determined that it is better to thank your speaker formally, here are a few sample messages you could draw inspiration from.

If you’ve assessed how formal you need to be in the thank you message that you’re writing and have concluded that you don’t need to stand on ceremony, you can breathe a sigh of relief. 

That said, don’t let “informal” make you think you can use the same tone as you might when you are choosing a fool-proof message to write in a bachelorette card .

You are still thanking someone for a professional and serious engagement!

As a rule, when writing an informal thank you card, the more authentic your compliments are, the better.

A great line to use in an informal thank you card is to tell someone how wonderful it was to see them “expressing their truth.” 

If you’re a little confused by what it means to tell your truth, don’t worry, you aren’t alone. 

It’s certainly a slang-y phrase, which is what makes it so perfect for an informal note. 

Essentially, someone who is speaking their truth is expressing their needs, beliefs, and values.

They are doing so without adjusting them or changing them to fit other people’s preferences or to make other people more comfortable. 

Basically, this compliment acknowledges that someone is “being real.” 

18. I don’t know how to thank you, so I will just tell you that I think you are an absolute inspiration! Watching you speak to my company’s board members at the retreat last weekend made me so proud. You are wise beyond your years and your words went down a treat. 

Using superlatives is something you can do in informal thank you notes that might be out of place in a more formal note. 

Telling someone they are an “absolute inspiration” a “complete legend” or “the best” are things you can do casually, but that would come off strange in a formal letter. 

So, if you’re tempted to include a sentiment like, “you are a complete and total star” in a thank you message, pause for a second.

Ask yourself, “Do I really know this person well enough to say that to them?” 

If you do, happy days. However, if you have a niggling doubt that you are being too familiar, rein in your expressiveness and opt for a more conservative compliment like, “your speech made a lasting impression on me.” 

Clever things to write in a thank you note for a voluntary guest speaker 

What is generosity? Well, there are two different kinds of generosity that spring to mind when one thinks of a guest speaker who is sharing their wisdom on a voluntary basis. 

The first, of course, is that they are doing work without being paid for it.

Whether they are doing it out of the goodness of their heart because they believe in the cause that the event is furthering, or to gain personal exposure, it is still undoubtedly a kindness. 

The second kind of generosity is what we speak about when someone openly and freely shares their story (often in a personal way) with others.

A lot of people are very guarded when it comes to protecting their personal experiences, struggles, and thoughts. 

However, if we were all so guarded, we would have a hard time relating to others, because we would have no knowledge about what was going on in their minds. 

That is why speakers who truly open up are rare and deserve praise. 

As an aside, if you want to work on this generous quality in yourself, and ask yourself “ What’s my story? ” why not start by writing your personal thoughts down?

Here is a list of great things to write about when you are bored to spark your creativity. 

19. Thank you for so generously agreeing to speak at our charity event. The gift of your inspiring words was deeply appreciated by all who attended. 

We all give in different ways. Some people regularly donate to a cause they believe in, while others practice daily acts of kindness. 

Some people do extremely simple things like responding when someone says “Hi” by taking the time to pause and smile genuinely at them. 

Whatever your preferred way to give back to your community or show care for those around you, it is nice to acknowledge that other people’s ways of doing so may differ. 

If someone has a public profile, they might choose to give back by volunteering their time to speak at charitable events. 

Maybe you were able to draw in a bigger crowd and sell more tickets or tables at your event because you could promise attendees that they would hear a speaker in person.

If so, the person you’re thanking has contributed significantly to your charitable drive. 

Acknowledging how valuable the time a guest speaker has given you is is an appropriate thing to do. 

20. The favor you did our school by coming in to talk to our graduating class about developing a personal budget will not be forgotten. Thank you for being so generous with your time. 

If you want to acknowledge that a guest speaker gave a presentation on a voluntary basis without coming across as crass, you can refer to what they did as a “favor.” 

Favors are unpaid by definition, so calling a speech a favor is a way to show the person you invited to talk that you are aware of the sacrifice they made for you. 

Many people with enough money and a big public profile would probably be happy to give back to their community. That said, acknowledging the kindness and good faith they’ve shown is important. 

21. On behalf of my family, thank you so much for so kindly offering to talk at our memorial event for our late grandfather. Your accomplishments and contributions to society are an inspiration to us all. To hear you talk so openly about your own challenges and grief was a consolation to everyone in attendance. 

Are you are writing a thank you on behalf of your family because the guest speaker that you’re addressing came to speak at an intimate event?

If so, thank them for their kind words by referencing the importance of the wedding, funeral, or memorial event to everyone there. 

As anyone who has ever struggled with what to say to someone who has lost a loved one knows, speaking about personal grief (or even personal joy) can be a tricky thing for an outsider. 

Often, the only way for an external speaker to genuinely connect with those in attendance at a family even is to discuss their own story.

You’re walking to work and a stranger stops you on the street to say, “I love your skirt.” In English. What do you say?

Or maybe your English-speaking neighbor brings your family dinner because you were at the hospital for surgery. That’s super nice! So how could you express how thankful you are?

Saying thank you has power. It can help you feel gratitude, share joy and kindness with others, and make other people smile and feel happy.

I want you to know how ALL the different ways to say thank you in English so you can express your appreciation in any situation.

In today’s lesson you’ll NEW ways to say thank you when:

  • Your colleague offers to get you some coffee from the cafeteria
  • Your boss holds the door open for you
  • A company offers you a job or a promotion
  • You end a business meeting with new clients
  • Your husband/wife offers to clean the dishes because you had a long day

  • Your team at works stays late to finish a project on time

Say Thank You in English — Casual Situations

Did your friend just wish you and your husband a happy anniversary? Did your office celebrate your birthday with cake? Did a stranger hold a door open for you at the post office?

For these everyday, informal experiences, we can use a variety of expression to say thanks.

Thank you. / Thanks so much. / Thanks a lot. / Thanks a bunch. / Thanks a ton. / Thanks!

Did your colleague at work just bring you a cup of coffee? Say:

  • “Thanks a bunch! I really need an extra dose of caffeine right now!”
  • “Thanks! You’re awesome for thinking of me.”
  • “Thank you!”

I really appreciate it. / You shouldn’t have.

Did your office just give you a birthday gift or a surprise party at work? Say:

  • “I can’t believe you did this! You shouldn’t have. But thank you so much. This was very kind of you.”
  • “What a thoughtful gift. I really appreciate this!”

I don’t know what to say! / That’s very kind.

A stranger on the street just gave you a compliment. Say:

  • “I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”
  • “That’s very kind of you. Thank you.”

You’re the best. / I owe you one. / You rock.

Your friend at work stayed late to help you finish a project.

  • “You’re the best. I wouldn’t have finished this on time without you.”
  • “I really owe you one. Thanks for staying late. Next time you need help, I’ve got it.”

What would I do without you? / To say thank you is not enough. / I can’t thank you enough.

You had a stressful and difficult day at work. Your husband said he would take care of dinner and do all the cleanup. Say:

  • “What would I do without you? You’re wonderful.”
  • “I can’t thank you enough. I really need a night off.”

Say Thank You in English — Formal Situations

Some daily situations – at work and in our personal lives – require more formal language. And this is often true in writing.

For example, if you’re expressing thankfulness or gratitude in a speech at a wedding, a formal reception or networking event, or in a lecture, it would be appropriate to choose more formal language.

Or if you’re writing thank you notes to friends and family members; if you’re sending an email to say thank you to a new client; or writing to another company, again, you’ll want to use these more formal expressions.

Did one of your business contacts take some extra time to give you some information you needed? Send an email to say thank you…

  • “Hi, Samantha. I just wanted to send a note to say thank you for taking the trouble to answer all my questions. I know you are busy and I appreciate that you took the time to respond quickly. Thank you.”

I’m eternally grateful for… / I cannot thank you enough for… / I want you to know how much I value… / Words cannot describe how grateful I am for… / Please accept my deepest thanks for…

Sometimes we have very difficult times in our lives. Maybe a loved one becomes ill. Someone passes away. Or perhaps you lose a job.

Tragedies happen. These can be terribly stressful times. If you are writing someone to thank them to help you, these expressions are most appropriate.

  • “I’m eternally grateful to you for providing dinners to my family while I was in the hospital. I felt comforted knowing they were well-feed.”
  • “Words cannot express how grateful I am for your help after my mom passed away. I was devastated and you helped me get through each day. ”

Say Thank You in English — Professional Situations

If you are writing an official business email or business letter, then it’s best to use professional, formal expressions to show your thanks or appreciation.

For example, you may be writing to thank someone or to thank another company for their help. Or perhaps you want to express your gratitude for them working with you this year.

Thank you for your assistance with… / Thank you for your attention to this matter

  • “Thank you for your assistance with/attention to this matter. We look forward to hearing from you shortly.”

Your support is greatly appreciated. / I’d like to express my/our appreciation for… / Thank you for your kind consideration.

  • “Your support in this discussion is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing our work with you.”
  • “On behalf of our company, I’d like to sincerely express our appreciation for your business this year. We wish you Happy Holidays and look forward to another successful year together.”

You can make your speech as funny or touching as you'd like, but there are some guidelines you may want to follow as you deliver it. A Wedding Thank-You Speech Template

[Partner's name] and I want to thank everyone for being here with us today. Many of you have traveled a long way to participate, and we thank you for your time and effort.

Find your kind of venue

We've spent the last [number] months planning our wedding, and we could not have done it without the help of some very special people. First, [one partner's parents' names] and [other partner's parents' names], thank you for everything you've provided and done for us. You've been there every step of the way, ensuring our wedding day was the best it could possibly be. And it has been.

To our wedding party [list names or address as a whole]—you've laughed with us, celebrated our engagement with us, cried with us over ugly tablecloth colors and bad hair days, and just been all-around amazing friends to us both. And for that, we thank you so much. Our day wouldn't be the same without each and every one of you involved.

To our guests: Each of you is here because you belong here. Our day wouldn't be complete without you. Thank you so much for coming.

Who Should You Thank in Your Wedding Thank-You Speech?

It's totally up to you who you choose to thank. You can keep it short and sweet by offering a sweeping thanks to everyone who's present, or you can give a shout-out to whoever made your big day possible. Here are some common people you might want to thank. Take a look at our list and pick and choose as you put together your speech.

Your partner. Here's a sweet opportunity to begin by thanking the person who you'll be spending the rest of your life with.

Your parents. There's a good chance they've helped you financially with your wedding, or at least have contributed in some way. No matter how big or small, it's kind to acknowledge and appreciate any assistance they gave.

Your partner's parents. Similarly, acknowledge any contribution your new in-laws made, and express how happy you are to be marrying their child.

Your maid of honor and best man. These key players are likely siblings, best friends, or other close companions for you and your partner. As such, you might choose to call them out separately from the rest of the wedding party.

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen (or variations of these, such as groomswomen or bridesmen). Don't forget that being in a wedding takes a lot of time and money. If your attendants made you feel special and celebrated, tell them. You could also choose to distribute a small gift as a token of your appreciation to them.

Your wedding planner. They worked hard for you, so don't be afraid to recognize their efforts.

Your photographer/DJ/cake artist/florist/other vendor. If you've worked very closely with one of your vendors, they went above and beyond for you or they were a personal recommendation, now's a good time to let them feel special by telling them so.

As we embark on this next chapter of our lives, we couldn't be more grateful to know we have your love and support. To our parents, thank you for your undying support and encouragement. You've shown us that marriage isn't easy, but it is worth it. You've each done everything in your power to ensure our wedding day turned out just like we imagined. So please raise a glass as we toast to each and every one of you here today.
  • I grew up with the love my parents shared as my example for what marriage looked like. I always hoped to marry someone who would share with me the same kind of love they had. When I met my future in-laws for the first time, I recognized that same kind of unconditional love. So I stand here today, promising each and every one of you, that [partner's name] and I will pledge to love each other in that same way.

What NOT to Say in a Wedding Thank-You Speech

Lighten up the atmosphere with some humor so that the guests would laugh a bit. You can incorporate a very short story of not more than one minute. A punchy one-liner with enough humor to liven the audience is also perfect. Make sure your story is relevant to the wedding day and your one-liner is easy to understand without explanation. Also, avoid dark humor or vulgar words.

  • The most effective thank-you is a message that only *you* could write to that specific person.
  • Stay professional, but let your voice and personality emerge.

I landed a job working for Oprah by treating my interview like dating. A truthful thank-you note sealed the deal.

  • Jeff Boodie, commonly referred to as Boodie, started working with Oprah Winfrey in 2007.
  • He says a thank-you note that he delivered right after his interview helped him land the job.
  • Boodie believes a handwritten note after a job interview is possibly stronger now than ever before.

After a job interview, never underestimate the power of a thank-you note . I worked as a business coordinator for The Oprah Magazine for three years, and it was actually a thank-you note that helped me get the job and set me up for an incredible career journey.

My journey began in my junior year of college, studying Biology but yearning for something different. That summer I took an internship at Hearst Corporation. Interning at Hearst opened doors to a world previously beyond my reach. It was through these connections that I unearthed an opportunity to work alongside Oprah Winfrey 's then-business manager, Nancy Denholtz, in 2007.

During the interview with Nancy, I absorbed every word she said. She asked me about my life plans for the future; why I wanted to work there; and whether I could give her at least three years if I were hired.

She showed me the magazine and how we charged advertising based on region and size of the stock print requested. We discussed budgets and how trust and privacy were imperative for this job. Following the interview, I went to the lobby and wrote a thank-you note while the specifics of our discussion were still fresh in my mind. Then I placed the note in the building's internal mail drop.

By sending it from the office, the letter reached the destination quicker and left an immediate impression.

The thank-you note played a pivotal role in the job offer. Nancy mentioned it two years later when I was finally comfortable enough to ask for the reason I was hired. Also, while working for the company, I saw firsthand how candidates who wrote thank-you cards or notes stood out from those who didn't.

I wrote a thank-you note infused with authenticity and purpose

I always looked at interviews like dating. Am I speaking with someone I can spend each day building something greater with? I wrote the thank-you note to include specifics about the job description we discussed and expressed how and why I was prepared for the job.

I included the values I knew I could bring to the position and wrote about my excitement to learn from someone seasoned in their career. I included details we discussed about Nancy's family and my understanding of what it's like to work hard and build success for those you love.

Just thanking someone for their time is important, so I ended the note by thanking Nancy for the opportunity to sit and talk and I wished everyone good luck.

Not being a fan played a big role in me securing the position as well

I may not have been a "fan" of Oprah then, but I recognized the unparalleled potential for growth and learning in such an environment. Years later, I realized that not being a fan also played a big role in securing the position. We were there to work on business, not praise.

Celebrities want people around them who can add value in an area of expertise and offer solutions to their problems. If you only ask for a photo to put on Instagram, you become a fan — not a future business partner.

I helped ensure all our VIP guests felt welcomed and their immediate needs were handled. Besides events, I navigated budgetary constraints, liaised with various stakeholders, and witnessed firsthand the power of information and leverage.

My tenure with Oprah wasn't just a chapter but a catalyst. I was able to quickly understand how we made revenue and how important keeping track of it was. This job was career-defining. It allowed me to be a trusted source to a brand and an individual who's very private and protective of those who work for her.

To this day, I'm asked how I have access to so many people with influence and wealth. I'll forever give Oprah Winfrey credit for giving me opportunities because I was vetted by someone so many people respect.

I forged my identity in a competitive landscape

I'll never forget when I asked for a meeting with Gayle King, O's editor at large, after Oprah had given us a Christmas bonus. Instead of signing a card (something we did every year since and before I'd been there), I brainstormed with Gayle to do something that would be more meaningful. I came up with the idea to create a video in which staff could say thank you and share how they used the extra cash over the holidays. It was a success.

I stepped up without realizing that's what I was doing. I just wanted to show that our team could be more grateful, and we could use video to express our gratitude to Oprah.

After three years, I wanted to find my own path, so I left The Oprah Magazine. People thought I was crazy, but I realized I was attached to a brand that gave me influence, and I wanted to forge my own way.

Now, as the founder of ConnectUp Media , a brand and influencer social-impact company, I'm committed to bridging gaps and fostering relationships and business partnerships at the highest echelons. With emails being skipped and accidentally deleted, a handwritten note is possibly more powerful now than ever. There isn’t any particular rule you need to follow in terms of the structure of the letter, according to Worthington. “I think it should just be from the heart and express whatever feels important for her to know,” she mentions. If following a certain format will help you organize your thoughts and write more effectively, though, you can follow the traditional flow of any school paper: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. This might look like opening the letter by congratulating the bride, sharing memories and stories in the following paragraph, and ending the note with well-wishes for the future. As long as you’ve communicated your message, it doesn’t matter whether your note is three sentences or three pages long.
