In today’s era, electricity plays a vital role in our daily life, a day without electricity is very hard to imagine. In this contrary, we are going to present an essay on a day without electricity.

Imagine sitting a dark, confined space in absolute silence and no human being around. That’s how it would feel to live a day without electricity.

Firstly, let me list out what all I would not be able to do. I would have to say goodbye to my daily morning coffee as, without the help of my refrigerator, my milk would have gone bad. And black coffee is an atrocity that I cannot face, forget tasting.

With a grumpy start to my morning, I would enter my washroom to shower only to realize that today would be the day I freeze to death as my instant geyser would not be working.

With my body shivering and my teeth chattering, I would rush to my room only to realize that my phone is on 10 percent battery and my hairdryer will not switch on today. What a miserable situation it would be.

After getting ready somehow, I would rush downstairs to realize that after a long time, I will need to eat some fruit or ready-made items due to the uselessness of my toaster I would have to forgo my usual toast and jam for the day.

As I reach school, I realize it would turn out to be a fun day as due to the absence of electricity, we could be out of our classes for the entire day. It would turn out to be an unintentional picnic by itself. Well, the food may not be up to the mark due to obvious reasons but we would manage with what we have.

The ride back home after our usual class hours would be tiring and sweaty due to the lack of air-conditioning inside the bus, leaving us to battle the city’s humidity and pollution through the panes of our open bus windows.

On a much larger scale, there would be a global crisis as no electricity would mean complete darkness after sunset. It would also lead to a lapse of our economy as online trading and e-commerce would suffer losses of high stakes and fail to record every move or change in numbers and keeping track of the ever-changing stock market would be a whole new nightmare.

It would lead to various complications in the Healthcare industry as most Intensive care units rely on ventilators and various other pieces of equipment that rely on electricity to work and keep patients alive.

On a global stage, there would a standstill situation as getting messages across from one place to another would not be able to take place at a drop of a hat. आज के आधुनिक युग में मनुष्य बिजली का उपयोग ज्यादा ही कर रहा है जिससे कि पर्यायवरण को भी नुकसान पहुँच रहा है और बिजली उत्पन्न करने में प्रयोग होने वाले स्त्रोत जो कि एक बार प्रयोग करने से नष्ट हो जाते है वह धीरे धीरे खत्म होते जा रहे हैं। मनुष्य चारों तरफ से बिजली से चलने वाले उपकरणों से घिरा हुआ है। वह हर काम के लिए बिजली पर निर्भर रहता है। व्यक्ति जितना बिजली को बचाएगा उतना ही उसके पैसे की बचत होगी साथ ही पर्यायवरण को भी हानि कम पहुँचेगी। हर व्यक्ति को बिजली का खर्च कम करना चाहिए और बिजली जो कि ऊर्जा का एक रूप है उसे सरंक्षित रखना चाहिए।

बिजली को बचाने के लिए हर व्यक्ति को अपने स्तर पर शुरूआत करनी चाहिए। इसके लिए व्यक्ति बहुत से कदम उठा सकता है। कुछ लोग दिन में भी घर में लाईट चला कर बैठे रहते है उन्हें चाहिए कि वह दिन में लाईट न चलाए और जितना हो सके उतना काम सूर्य की रोशनी में ही करे। बिजली के पुराने उपकरण नहीं प्रयोग करने चाहिए क्योंकि उनको नए उपकरणों के मुकाबले ज्यादा बिजली चाहिए होती है। आजकल लोग घरों की रसोई में गैस की जगह बिजली से चलने वाले इंडक्सन कूकर का प्रयोग करने लगे है जो कि सबसे ज्यादा बिजली खिचता है इसलिए गैस का प्रयोग करना ही बेहतर है। लोगों को सौर ऊर्जा और पवन ऊर्जा का प्रयोग करना चाहिए । घरों में बड़े बड़े बल्ब की जगह एलईडी बल्ब लगाए जाने चाहिए। लोगों को फ्रीज का प्रयोग भी सही तरीके से करना चाहिए और टेलीवीजन भी जरूरत से ज्यादा नहीं देखना चाहिए। वर्षा और सर्दी को छोड़कर बाकि सभी समय धुप में ही कपड़े सुखाने चाहिए जिससे कि इलैक्टरोनिक ड्राईर में खर्च होने वाली बिजली खत्म होगी।

हमारे बिजली की बचत करने से बहुत से स्त्रोतों की बचत होगी। अगर हम बिजली का प्रयोग सही से करेंगे तो उन क्षेत्रों में भी बिजली पहुँच पाएगी जिनमें अब तक बिजली नहीं है। हमारी बिजली की बचत किसी गरीब के घर में रोशनी कर सकती है। हम सभी को देख कर ही बिजली का प्रयोग करना चाहिए अन्यथा सरकार भी प्रति युनिट बिजली के दाम बढ़ाती जाएगी। लोगों को बिजली की अहमियत को समझना चाहिए और भविष्य में भी प्रयाप्त मात्रा में बिजली उत्पन्न की जा सके इसके लिए अभी से कम प्रयोग करना चाहिए। जितना हो सके उतना हमें प्राकृतिक रोशनी का सहारा लेना चाहिए। हम सभी को मिलकर ही बिजली को बचाने के लिए कदम उठाना होगा क्योंकि एक अकेला व्यक्ति यह सब नहीं कर सकता है।

बिजली को भाप या पानी से बनाया जाता है। बिजली वैज्ञानिकों के आविष्कारों की बहुत बड़ी नदी है जिससे यह दुनिया हैरान रह गई है। इसके बिना आधुनिक जीवन की कल्पना भी नहीं की जा सकती है। यह पूरा दिन मनुष्य के अनुसार काम करती है यह मनुष्य के लिए भोजन बनाती है, कमरे साफ कराती है और रात को दिन में बदल देती है।

बिजली आज हमारे जीवन का एक महत्वपूर्ण अंग बन चुकी है। आज के समय में घरों में बिजली का प्रयोग और अधिक बढ़ गया है। अगर थोड़ी बहुत देर के लिए बिजली चली जाती है तो बहुत बड़ी समस्या उत्पन्न हो जाती है। आज के आधुनिक जीवन में बिजली मनुष्य के जीवन की एक बहुत बड़ी जरूरत बन गई है जिसके बिना मनुष्य किसी भी काम को करने में सफल नहीं होता है।

बिजली से चलने वाले उपकरण :  हम बिजली चमत्कारों को चारों ओर आसानी से देख सकते हैं। आज के समय में हर घर में रोशनी, हवा, गर्मी, दूरी की वार्तालाप, समाचार सुनने के उपकरणों को देखा जा सकता है। आज हर घर में रोशनी करने और हवा देने के लिए उपकरण हैं जिससे हमारा जीवन आरामदायक बन गया है।

आजकल सडकों, दुकानों और घरों में रोशनी की व्यवस्था है। आज के समय में हम वो सब काम रात में भी कर सकते हैं जो सिर्फ दिन में किए जाते थे। पहले हम हवा के लिए मेहनत किया करते थे लेकिन आज पंखों के आविष्कार से हमारा जीवन और भी आरामदायक हो गया है। अब बिजली के प्रयोग से सर्दियों में भी गर्मी का आनंद ले सकते हैं।

बिजली के चूल्हों से खाना भी बनाया जाता है। बिजली से कपड़ों पर प्रेस भी की जाती है। बिजली की गर्मी से एक बहुत बड़ा फायदा होता है कि इससे कभी वायु प्रदूषण नहीं होता है। बिजली की वजह से तार और टेलीफोन जैसे साधन उपलब्ध कराये गये हैं। तारों और टेलीफोन के जरिए हम दूर-दूर तक अपने संदेश को भेज सकते हैं।

बेतर साधन की वजह से हम बिना तार के संदेश, फोटो भेजे जा सकते हैं। रेडियो से कहीं दूर होने वाले कार्यक्रमों को आसानी से सुना जा सकता है। बिजली का प्रयोग घर की औरतों के लिए एक वरदान की तरह सिद्ध होता है। रसोईघर में भी बिजली की मदद से खाना बनाया जाता है। कपड़े भी बिजली की मदद से धुल जाते हैं।

आजकल चटनी बनाने और मिर्च मसाले पीसने के लिए और जूस बनाने के लिए भी मशीनों का प्रयोग किया जाता है। आजकल घर-घर में कंप्यूटर को देखा जा सकता है वह भी बिजली के करण ही आया है। भारत अभी इतना विकसित नहीं हुआ है इसी वजह से घरों में कंप्यूटर बहुत कम दिखाई देते हैं। जब कंप्यूटर की उपयोगिता का पता चलेगा तो घरों में भी इसका प्रयोग अधिक होने लगेगा।

भारी मशीनों में उपयोग :  बिजली का प्रयोग भारी मशीनों में भी किया जाता है। बिजली का सबसे अधिक प्रयोग परिवहन में किया जाता है। बिजली की मदद से ट्राम और रेलगाड़ियों को भी चलाया जाता है। बिजली के इंजन बहुत शक्तिशाली होते हैं और इनमें से किसी प्रकार के धुएँ के निकलने से प्रदूषण नहीं होता है।

इन यंत्रों को अधिक गति से भी चलाया जा सकता है और धीमी गति से भी। बिजली के सहारे संसार में ओद्योगिक क्रांति आ गई है। आज के समय में भरी-भरी औद्योगिक मशीने बिजली से ही चलाई जाती हैं। इन भारी-भारी औद्योगिक  मशीनों से अनेक प्रकार की चीजें बनाई जाती हैं।

बिजली से बहुत भारी क्रेनें भी चलाई जा सकती हैं जो अधिक-से-अधिक बोझ को उठा सकती हैं। जो कारखाने बिजली से चलते हैं उनसे कभी वायु प्रदूषण नहीं होता है और दूसरे ऊर्जा के स्त्रोतों से यह बहुत सस्ती होती है। चिकित्सा के लिए भी बिजली का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

एक्स रे मशीनों को बिजली से चलाया जाता है जिससे रोगों के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त की जाती है और डॉक्टर हमें यह बताने में सक्षम हो जाता है कि हमारे शरीर की कौन सी हड्डी टूट गई है और कौन सी हड्डी ठीक है। अगर बीमारी है तो सर्जरी के लिए उपकरणों का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

बिजली की वजह से ही वायलेट जैसी अनेक किरणों का उत्पादन हुआ है जो अनेक रोगों के इलाज में प्रयोग की जाती हैं। बिजली से चलने वाली मशीनों की वजह से ही दिल की धडकन रुक जाने पर उसे फिर से सक्रिय किया जा सकता है। बिजली कृषि में भी अपना योगदान दे रही है। बिजली से कृषि के लिए ट्यूब और कुएँ चलाने के उत्पादन में बहुत मदद करता है।

मनोरंजन का साधन :  बिजली की वजह से ही मनोरंजन के साधन उपलब्ध हो पाए हैं। बिजली की वजह से ही रेडियों, टेलीविजन, वी०सी०आर० जैसे साधनों को मनोरंजन के लिए बनाना संभव हुआ है। आज टेलीविजन की वजह से हम दूर किसी स्थान पर होने वाली महत्वपूर्ण घटना को आसानी से देख सकते हैं।

आज हम बहुत से खेलों जैसे- क्रिकेट, टेनिस, फुटबाल, कबड्डी, और वॉलीबाल का सीधा प्रसारण घर बैठे आसानी से देख सकते हैं। बिजली का प्रयोग मनुष्य की सभी गतिविधियों में किया जाता है। बिजली की वजह से हमारे सुख कई गुना बढ़ जाते हैं।

जो लोग निर्धन होते हैं उनके घरों में भी मनोरंजन की वस्तुएँ आसानी से देखी जा सकती हैं। लेकिन इन साधनों का प्रयोग केवल बिजली से ही किया जा सकता है अगर बिजली न हो तो इनका प्रयोग नहीं किया जा सकता है।

A Day Without Electricity

Of all the inventions during the last two centuries, the invention of electricity has been the most wonderful and useful. Everywhere we find ourselves amid the. various kinds of appliances based on electricity. But seldom do we realize, how much we depend on it for the comfort of our daily life. This is because electricity is easily available to us. We realize its importance only when for a moment it stops working. I happened to realize its importance and power when in the month of July, we had to go without electricity for a full day.

It was 7.30 p.m. when there was a power break-down following a heavy thunder-storm. It not only uprooted the electric poles but damaged the transformer which supplied electricity to our locality. We had to live in dark for the whole night. We reported to the exchange but the response was more irritating than satisfying, as it would take twelve hours or so to regain the power supply.

We were to a great hardship. At night I could not study, though I tried to study in candle light but found myself unable to concentrate. There was hardly a speck of light visible. The whole colony was enveloped in “eternal gloom”. It looked like the city of the dead. There was no activity in the market too with all the shops closed.

The next morning newspaper reported several cases of accidents and incidents of robbery in various parts of our locality. As in the absence of light robbers had a golden chance to rob. In the absence of street light, the fast moving vehicles collided and led to serious accidents. All the road crossings where automatic signals were installed went out of order.

In school we could hardly concentrate on our lessons. The time seemed to drag on forever while we perspired in the humid atmosphere. On account of electricity failure, we missed our television lesson too. The power failure did not only cause inconvenience to students but to officers, factory owners and factory workers too. The house wives and cinema goers also suffered. As most of the factories had to close down and cinema halls had to postpone their shows.

When after about eighteen hours power supply was restored, I realized, how much we depend on this mysterious force of all machines and modern life.

A Day without Electricity

In an age of machines and a techno savvy generation the above sentence can evoke a shocked response. Rather, it would better be on the lines of —”we don’t won’t to imagine a day like that.” Electricity is an indispensable part of our life today. But supposing you do try and picture that scenario how different could your day be? Initially we would all fret and fume because it seems that life would come to us standstill. But it could also lead us to explore alternative avenues to spend the day.

Television watching would be drastically reduced. People working long hours on the computer could afford to stretch a bit and not be part of the “stiff neck clan’ for a day. Many tasks would have to be done manually and that would drive home the point as to how dependent we are on gadgets for our daily chores. The industrial sector which is largely ‘power driven’ would come to a grinding halt. Essential services like hospitals and transport would be badly affected. But the day could motivate us to take up our activity for which we rarely find time.

Candles, lanterns and earthen lamps would be used to drive away the darkness. Shops selling these would do brisk business and may put up a sign board saying ‘no stock’. Kids could get spooky ideas and enter into a realm of pure fantasy and indulge in pranks that could sometimes scare the daylights out of adults. The night sky would look so different. Stars above, but no neon lights blinking. The roads and the lanes bereft of street lights would look like a ‘no mans land’. Houses would be lit up with candles and lanterns whose flickering light would cast long shadows. Families and friends would sit together chatting or engaged in idle gossip and in-between lament about the fact as to “what a day it has been!”

It could also be used as a time to reflect on how our life sometimes falls into a particular pattern and only rarely do we deviate from it. When an aura of darkness envelops us, a ray of light brings in hope.
