The Why Behind Math

Numbers should add up to more than the right answer. They should inspire aha moments and joyful connections. Eureka Math ® set a new standard for rigor, coherence, and focus in the classroom so students gain a deeper understanding of the why behind the numbers, all while making math more enjoyable to learn and teach.

The most widely used K–5 math curriculum in the U.S.

Knowledge that lasts.

Thoughtfully constructed and designed like a story, Eureka Math is meticulously coherent, with an intense focus on key concepts that layer over time, creating enduring knowledge. Students gain a complete body of math knowledge, not just a discrete set of skills. They use the same models and problem-solving methods from grade to grade, so math concepts stay with them, year after year.

With a great focus on fewer topics centered on the major work of the grade band, students develop an understanding of the why, not just the how behind the math.

Eureka Math exhibits unparalleled rigor throughout the grades. Students develop conceptual understanding and practice procedural skills and fluency. They also have opportunities to connect their learning with real-life application problems.

Eureka Math Print Materials

Did you know that 2,200 years ago the Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos was the first scientist to calculate the distance to the moon by using careful observations, measurements, and a geometric model? It took 2,000 years for someone to come up with a better method! Calculating the distance to the moon is just one example of the real-world problems embedded throughout the   Eureka Math®   curriculum.

Engage NY Math Grade 1 Module 3 Lesson 9 Problem Set Answer Key 1

Explanation: To measure the guitar length we have to use any object like a paper clip or a toothpick. By using that we can know the length of the guitar A i.e 4 units and Guitar B is 3 units in length. By observing their lengths carefully we would know that Guitar A is 1 unit longer than GuitarB.

Engage NY Math Grade 1 Module 3 Lesson 9 Problem Set Answer Key 2

Explanation: Here we have to measure both the objects in centimeter cubes. After measuring, the blue pen is 8 cm in length and the yellow pen is 10 cm in length.

Question 3. How much longer is the yellow pen than the blue pen? The yellow pen is _________ centimeters longer than the blue pen. Answer: The yellow pen is 2 centimeters longer than the blue pen.

Explanation: We have already measured the lengths of each object in centimeter cubes. Therefore the yellow pen is 10 cm long in length and that the blue pen is 8 cm long. Hence by comparing both the length of the objects we could know that the yellow pen is 2 centimeters longer than the blue pen.

Question 4. How much shorter is the blue pen than the yellow pen? The blue pen is _________ centimeters shorter than the yellow pen. Answer: The blue pen is 2 centimeters shorter than the yellow pen.

Explanation: As we know the blue pen is 8 cm long and the yellow pen is 10 cm long. By comparing both the object values we could know that the blue pen is 2 cm shorter than the yellow pen i.e is 10-8 = 2 cm.

Use your centimeter cubes to model each problem. Then, solve by drawing a picture of your model and writing a number sentence and a statement. Question 5. Austin wants to make a train that is 13 centimeter cubes long. If his train is already 9 centimeter cubes long, how many more cubes does he need? Answer: Here Austin needs 4 more cubes.
