For India and Pakistan, Cricket Is Never Just a Game

It’s one of the greatest rivalries in sports, when war off the field allows it — a contest of national identities that will be renewed this Sunday in a World Cup match.

essay on india vs pakistan match 2021

By Mujib Mashal

NEW DELHI — The event will be watched by hundreds of millions around the world, on televisions in remote villages, jumbo screens in crowded cities, phones in migrant labor tenements and flickering monitors in the living rooms of a diaspora spread across the world’s time zones.

Face-offs on the cricket field between India and Pakistan , like the expected encounter on Sunday in Dubai, have become increasingly rare, a victim of the frosty relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. For a match to take place at all, even on neutral ground, players and fans have to hope tensions remain short of war and that the organizers can weather growing calls for a boycott.

The meeting on Sunday, the first in two years, comes as part of a World Cup. The rising tensions are tied to a number of factors — repeated militant attacks in India; the disputed territory of Kashmir, where India accuses Pakistan of supporting militant groups; and rising intolerance in both countries — that have almost entirely wiped out any exchange between two nations that otherwise overlap in shared history, passions and culture.

But the intensity of passions surrounding Sunday’s match draw on deeper reservoirs, issues of national identity that are wrapped into the fortunes of the competing cricket teams.

And despite calls for a boycott from Indian political leaders after a spasm of violence recently in Kashmir, the game is going ahead. As India’s cricket organizing body has made clear, the country cannot simply opt out of an international commitment like this one, the T20 World Cup — especially one where its team is favored to win.

“We need to maintain a cricketing bond,” Ramiz Raja, who leads the Pakistan Cricket Board, said after meeting his Indian counterpart. “Our stance is, ‘The further politics remains from cricket, the better.’”

But in cricket, a game that can appear bafflingly complex to the uninitiated, it is precisely those political fault lines that generate such passionate interest.

Cricket in South Asia is a legacy of British colonial rule — “an Indian game accidentally discovered by the British,” as the critic Ashis Nandy once said. The end of that rule saw India partitioned in 1947, creating Pakistan as a new nation for tens of millions of the region’s Muslims.

In the 75 years since, the two countries have gone to war several times, and have remained on a war footing when not fighting. Sometimes, the tensions have meant the cricket teams didn’t play each other for a decade or so. Other times, such as during the 1999 World Cup, they played a match even as they waged a war over Kashmir .

“It’s tempting to draw parallels between the story of cricket and the story of India,” Amit Varma, who hosts the popular podcast “The Seen and the Unseen,” said in a recent episode . “We started out uncertain of our place in the world, trying to find our feet, hobbled by an inferiority complex, looking for pride in small consolations, but eventually opening up to the world and asserting ourselves.”

“Our cricket has flourished to a point that India dominates this game, especially in a commercial sense,” Mr. Varma added.

India has become the undisputed destination for the sport in recent years, with top players from the around world seeking to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League. The league is among the top five most profitable sports leagues in the world, and top players can make as much as $2 million for a two-month season.

But in a sign of the tense times in the region, Pakistani players are barred from joining the league, depriving them of a major platform to compete with the world’s best — or to cash in on some of the riches. The two countries largely cut off bilateral ties after a deadly terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 by assailants who had come from Pakistan.

That the occasional games have been played only in neutral venues for a decade has done away with a major vehicle of interaction between the two cricket-crazed nations.

Indian and Pakistani players have often said that every time they play in the other country, the intensity on the field is matched only by the hospitality off it. Vendors in bazaars would refuse payments, while the families of the host players would send home-cooked food to the visiting players in their hotel rooms.

“I had hosted the whole Indian team at my house — a full spread, of kababs and all,” Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistani captain, recalled of one tour more than a decade ago. “When they arrived, I found out they were all vegetarians. I had to quickly scramble for lentils and vegetables.”

Vicky Luthra, who runs a photo studio in New Delhi, is such a dedicated fan that he has watched India and Pakistan play four times, including traveling all the way to England in 2017, where the match ticket alone cost him about $400.

“I cannot paint my face, I cannot do every drama. I am a gentleman audience of cricket,” Mr. Luthra said, smilingly. “But I definitely always wish good luck to India.”

The game he most fondly remembers is when he crossed the border on foot in 2006 to watch India play in the Pakistani city of Lahore. He was excited to go — his grandparents hailed from the part of the country that ended up in Pakistan — but his wife insisted she would not let him travel alone.

“My wife was very much against going to Pakistan,” Mr. Luthra said. “But she was surprised by how good it was, how friendly the people were. It was because of cricket I got to see those parts.”

For Pakistan, too, the story of its cricket team at times mirrors the state of affairs in the country — bursts of brilliance and talent undermined by mismanagement, uncertainty and lack of opportunity.

Pakistan has been the underdog in recent years, with India dominating the World Cup face-offs while compiling an undefeated record. But in the 1980s and 1990s, Pakistan had the kind of talent that could win bilateral matches frequently, creating heartbreak for the Indian team’s massive fan following. The country’s current prime minister first made his name in cricket; he led Pakistan to the World Cup crown in 1992.

This year’s tournament comes at a time when the mood in Pakistan is “sagging,” their cricket chief, Mr. Raja, said.

Following a militant attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009, Pakistan went a decade without hosting a single international match. International teams have slowly begun touring the country again. But just weeks before the World Cup, New Zealand abruptly called off its tour because of security concerns, and England soon followed suit.

In the Pakistani port city of Karachi, fans prepared for the T20 World Cup match with hopes that their team could finally reverse India’s domination.

Cricket has many formats, including a “Test match” that can run as long as five days, and still end in a tie. But the T20 World Cup is the shortest, each match lasting about three hours, so the results are more easily swayed by a brief spell of brilliance.

“The pocket Qurans are out, the memorized holy words are recited and hands are raised for prayers,” Ebad Ahmed, a journalist based in Karachi, said about some fans seeking divine intervention. “The idea is to bring God to our team’s side.”

No matter the Pakistani team’s chances, the game will be a publicly shared experience even for people like Muzamil Ali, a 33-year-old sales professional who confessed he didn’t even like cricket. Nevertheless, when it’s India and Pakistan, most people can’t help but watch — and Mr. Ali plans to take it in on a big screen outdoors.

“Watching a Pakistan-India match with a crowd is not only fun,” Mr. Ali said, “but also it is better to share grief with others in case Pakistan loses.”

Zia ur-Rehman contributed reporting from Karachi, Pakistan.

An earlier version of this article misstated the surname of the host of the podcast "The Seen and the Unseen." He is Amit Varma, not Verma.

Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam of Pakistan celebrate after winning by 10 wickets.

A correction: until today Pakistan men’s team had never won a World Cup game of ANY kind, not just T20, to India. What a way to do it- a pummelling, a majestic, dismissive, stroll. A glorious pancaking. And a sucker-punch to the planned progression of the competition. Wonderful stuff.

Shaheen Afridi is given the player of the match award for his dismantling of the Indian top order.

And that’s it from me for today. Enjoy your celebrations/ an arm pat for your sorrows. Congratulations Pakistan. Good evening!

The cameras return to Dubai after infinite ads. Time to pick over the bones of Pakistan’s TEN WICKET victory, with 13 balls to spare.

Virat Kohli: “Credit should be given where it is due and Pakistan outplayed us with the ball, when you lose three wickets for 20 runs early on it is very hard to get back into the game. Pakistan were very very professional . The pitch was ok, it played slow in the first half, a little bit of dew made the ball come a bit quicker onto the bat in the second half. We needed to get off to a good start but Pakistan stopped that. We’re not a team that presses the panic button this is the start of the tournament not the end of the tournament. We need to stay composed.”

Babar Azam : “ We executed the plans very well. Overall the bowlers bowled really well. WE batted deep and made sure we kept up with the run-rate and got those boundaries. We still believe there is a long way to go.”

“Just checking you all had Salah as captain as well?” pic.twitter.com/aTTuUna4Hc — The Pinch Hitter (@LePinchHitter) October 24, 2021

I can’t quite believe what I just watched! Babar and Rizwan are immediately congratulated by Virat Kohli, hand outstretched, and the rest of the Indian team. Pakistan descend into a joyful huddle. That’s Pakistan’s first T20 World Cup win over India and what style! India had no answer to the glorious conundrum that was Babar and Rizwan.

Pakistan beat India by ten wickets!

18th over: Pakistan 152-0 (Rizwan 79; Babar 68) Kohli looks like he’s going for the jugular with Bumrah, but plumps for Shami, whose first ball is a full-toss that Rizwan helps on its way fatly soaring over backward square for six. The next is powered for four through long-on, and the next through square leg! Babar zips to long-on, they charge back for the second, and that is that! Unbelievable scenes!

17th over: Pakistan 135-0 (Rizwan 64; Babar 64) Bhuvneshwar is on the money. Pakistan can only squeeze him for five, perhaps fatigue is setting in, but a couple of. marginal wides go Pakistan’s way. Babar is most perturbed when the sixth is not called wide. Bhuvneshwar merrily agrees with the umpire. 17 needed from 18.

16th over: Pakistan 128-0 (Rizwan 62; Babar 63) Shami’s first ball is snapped to the boundary by Rizwan who is all wristy hustle. A couple of singles then a leg bye. With four overs left, Pakistan now need a run a ball.

“Evening Tanya.” Evening Brian! “I noticed a reference to El Classico earlier but it is looking like Pakistan are threatening to turn this into Liverpool vs Manchester United now.”

Fifty for Rizwan!

15th over: Pakistan 121-0 (Rizwan 56; Babar 62) Rizwan whips Bumrah for another boundary legside, then they scurry through for two, still pressing, still pushing, even with the game as good as folded and in their pocket. India have no answer to this perfectly-paced onslaught. 31 needed from 30 balls.

“Pakistan going for the Net Run Rate thing.” muses Romeo.

14th over: Pakistan 112-0 (Rizwan 48; Babar 61) Four more as Babar lets fly at Jadeja, then sweeps another past a dejected short fine leg. He’s flying now. 40 needed from 36. Kohli’s knotted eyebrows are not impressed.

Fifty for Babar Azam!

13th over: Pakistan 101-0 (Rizwan 46; Babar 51) Rizwan squats and whips sending Chakaravarthy soaring for six over deep square leg. Babar’ fifty comes with a six of his own, a long-hop joyously dispatched over mid-wicket. Fifty off 40 balls. It’s a cakewalk.

Rizwan celebrates after scoring a half-century.

12th over: Pakistan 85-0 (Rizwan 38; Babar 44) Virat persists with his Mr Reliable. Jadeja is on point, but no breakthrough. No-one tell Virat Kohli, but United are losing 5-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Romeo is pondering: “I’m wondering whether there’ll be any Afghan commentators for this tournament.Preston Mommsen is listed, representing Scotland, but no one from Namibia. The only Afghan I’ve ever come across on ICC commentary is Hamid Hassan, but he’s playing.” “Niall O’Brien (love him) knows a lot about Afghan cricket so maybe that’ll have to do. He very likely knows a lot about Namibia too.”

11th over: Pakistan 80-0 (Rizwan 35; Babar 43) Bumrah to start the second ten. His second ball is the slot, and lofted by Babar, wide over mid-off for four. Bumrah retaliates with a yorker. Two more down the ground, then an edge behind.

Pandya is off the field having a shoulder scan.

10th over: Pakistan 71-0 (Rizwan 35; Babar 34) At half way through, Pakistan are nearly half way there. A heart-in-mouth four from Babar to start Chakaravarthy’s over, bisecting point and third man. Then a series of tight runs, culminating in that near-run out; Rizwan saved by his flying bat just hitting the ground before Bhuvneshwar’s direct hit. Drinks! India need wickets.

Rizwan charging for the line, a direct hit, but the bat is somehow just in.

REVIEW! Rizwan run-out

Wicketkeeper Pant unsuccessfully tries to dismiss Rizwan.

9th over: Pakistan 62-0 (Rizwan 32; Babar 28) The crowd are quiet, watching, waiting. Jadeja repeatedly dries the ball on his cloth. Three singles a, dot, then Babar goes full Babar, rocking onto his back foot and chugging the ball over deep midwicket for six.

8th over: Pakistan 52-0 (Rizwan 30; Babar 20) Pakistan need to breathe to survive the squeeze from Jadeja and, here, Chakaravarthy. Rizwan is almost stumped off a wide, stuttering forward. They plough singles.

7th over: Pakistan 46-0 (Rizwan 27; Babar 18) Kohli plays his trump card, Jadeja. Just a single and four dots off the first four. It’s damp out there, Jadeja slips fielding off his own bowling. Beautifully done, and whipped through almost before Pakistan had time to think.

6th over: Pakistan 43-0 (Rizwan 25; Babar 17) Bhuvneshwar is back, yellow rag hanging from the back of his trousers to dry off the dew. It looks like an old-style duster. No boundaries, but Rizwan and Babar pick off the singles with relative ease. The tip of Kohli’s beard scowls in disgust.

5th over: Pakistan 35-0 (Rizwan 21; Babar 14) The Shami bustle is so deceptive. He looks easy-pickings; he’s generally not. Babar eyes him up for one then purrs one, like a resting jaguar, over mid-on to the boundary. A slower ball is swivel-swept for four more by Rizwan.

“The fireworks of the one-handed Pant may have been extinguished by Pakistan’s excellent bowling and fielding but Kohli is playing a highly intelligent innings, playing classic cricket strokes and not getting flustered by the team’s relatively low score unlike the Windies yesterday,” writes Colum Fordham.

“I had a quick glimpse of Barcelona-Real Madrid but India-Pakistan is the real El Clasico today. It’s a wonderful contest.”

Too true, it’s glorious.

4th over: Pakistan 24-0 (Rizwan 15; Babar 9) Virat plumps for Chakaravarthy early. He’s tall, right arm releasing the ball close to his ear . There’s some smart fielding in the circle by Jadeja at backward point and Babar can’t get him away.

3rd over: Pakistan 22-0 (Rizwan 14; Babar 8) Bumrah throws a yorker in early. Rizwan is jittery, sending Babar back for a likely single. Babar flicks a full one square and a superb bit of one-handed fielding stops the boundary. Four from the over.

2nd over: Pakistan 18-0 (Rizwan 13; Babar 5) It’s Shami at the other end, shuffling in at speed. Rizwan is hustling, sprinting between the wickets. while Babar, that’s finger-kissing good, threading Shami through the covers for a satin-clad four.

Rizwan of Pakistan plays a shot.

Pakistan need 152 to win

1st over: Pakistan 10-0 (Rizwan 10; Babar 0) RIZ-WAN! He flicks Bhuvneshwar for four - a call made by the third umpire, then next ball pull-flicks him square for six off a ball just a thread too short. Bhuvneshwar retaliates with three successive dots.

India are in their huddle listening to a ferociously earnest Virat Kohli. And here we go again! Rizwan to face the first ball.

At half way, whose game is this? I don’t know! Superb by Pakistan in the opening overs, thwarted by Pant and Kohli, at his very best. That seventeen runs from Afridi’s final over could be costly - though he bowled like an absolute dream. Babar’s side were brilliant in the field, throwing themselves at everything. Time for a quick cup of tea.

An email! T ony Mason writes. “Tanya, thanks for these updates. I started watching the game but the screeching from the stadium announcer just turned me off so I switched to the football and have only you for cricket company. Has there been any dampening of the irritation since India were about 12-2?”

I was actually so engrossed with the game that I zoned out! The chase will be worth tuning in for.

India 151-7 after twenty overs

20th over: India 151-7 (Shami 0; Bhuvneshwar 5) It’s the superb Rauf with the last over, and with Pandya gone, India can’t get him away. A sprinkling of twos,, a bye from the last, and just seven from it. And breathe.

WICKET! Pandya c Babar b Rauf 11 (India 146-7)

A slower ball and Pandya powers high and picks out Babar.

19th over: India 144-6 (Pandya 11; Bhuvneshwar 1) After the glory of the Kohli wicket, Afridi is called for a waist-high no ball, and a free-hit. It’s beautifully bowled, India charge for one and a furious Afridi hurls the ball at the non-striker’s end, misses and the ball goes for four over throws. Carnage! Seventeen from the over.

WICKET! Kohli c Rizwan b Afridi 57 (India 133-6)

Kohli swings at a slower ball and a diving Rizwan swoops to swallow in florescent green gauntlets.

Afridi celebrates with teammates after dismissing India’s captain Kohli.

Fifty for Kohli!

18th over: India 127-5 (Pandya 0; Kohli 57) Kohli reaches fifty with a clip off Hasan Ali for two. The next goes high and handsome over extra-cover, hit on the up, impossibly good. Jadeja needs to motor and motor he does, swivelling and sending the ball flying to the fine-leg boundary, only to hole out next ball.

WICKET! Jadeja c b Hasan Ali 13 (India 125-5)

Jadeja is on the charge, but misreads the slower ball and sends it aerially.

17th over: India 114-4 (Jadeja 9; Kohli 48) Jadeja changes his bat - he’s not exploded into this game yet. Kohli drives, straight to the sweeper. Babar paces about, looking nervous. He has a green bandage on his hand - I wonder, do all the team first-aid kits match the jerseys? Rauf is canny, changing his pace cleverly, three slower balls in a row. Just four singles from the over.

16th over: India 110-4 (Jadeja 7; Kohli 46) Oh that’s clever from Kohli, who pulls Hasan in extreme wristiness, down to the fine-leg boundary. And another, pin-point timing, through extra-cover, beating a diving, tumbling, Shadab on the rope. Kohli is in sublime touch.

15th over: India 100-4 (Jadeja 6; Kohli 37) Shadab’s final over starts with two dots, then three singles, what is Kohli going to do with the sixth? Forcing a single is all he can manage. Well bowled Shadab! 1-22 in four. Six overs left.

14th over: India 96-4 (Jadeja 4; Kohli 35) Rauf rushes in, a beanpole on speed. Veteran Shoaib Malik patrols the outfield, throwing his body at hte skidding white ball and India can’t reach the boundary - till Virat eyes up a yorker, just inches wide, and turns it down to the rope. He punches the air in repressed passion.

Relations between the South Asian neighbours have been tense in recent years, with the two coming to the brink of war during a military standoff following an attack on Indian security forces in the disputed region of Kashmir’s Pulwama town in February 2019.

The countries have fought two of their three wars since gaining independence in 1947 over Kashmir, which both claim in full but administer separate portions of.

Pakistan and India have not played a bilateral series since 2012. The two sides last met in 2019, a World Cup match that India won by 89 runs at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Prior to Sunday’s win, Pakistan had lost all seven 50-over World Cup matches to India while also ending up on the losing side the five times they met in T20 World Cups.

Well done Pakistan. Wonderful effort to win this in style and get off the mark. I am sure Team India will bounce back stronger from this #INDvPAK — Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 24, 2021

Afridi, who took three wickets, was declared man of the match.

It was Pakistan’s first ever victory by 10 wickets against any opposition in a T20 match, while India also lost by such a margin for the first time.

“This is just the start, we have confidence to build on it now,” said Babar after the opening win in the round-robin Super 12 stage.

“That will remain with us. The pressure on us wasn’t that much – we weren’t thinking of the record against India at all. We executed our plans well and the early wickets were very helpful.”

Pakistan next play New Zealand in Sharjah on Tuesday.

India vs Pakistan, 5-0: The long and short story of India's dominance over Pakistan in T20 World Cup

T20 world cup: india have been pooled in group 2 of super12 alongside pakistan, new zealand, afghanistan, scotland and a second qualifier from group a. ahead of the high-octane clash on sunday, we take a look at all their previous meetings in the tournament's history..

Virat Kohli-led Team India will begin their hunt for a second ICC T20 World Cup trophy on October 24, when they take on 2009 champions and arch-rivals, Pakistan in their 2021 tournament opener in Dubai. The two teams have been pooled in Group 2 of Super12 alongside Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland and a second qualifier from Group A. They have previously faced each other five times in the T20 World Cu, going all the way back to the inaugural edition in 2007. Ahead of the high-octane clash on Sunday, we take a look at all their previous meetings in the tournament's history.

India will take on Pakistan on Sunday in T20 World Cup 2021

2007 - Group Stage

India and Pakistan played out a thrilling game in Durban in the final Group-D game at the inaugural T20 World Cup with the match ending in a tie. Robin Uthappa scripted India's fightback with his 39-ball 50 after a brilliant new-ball spell from Mohammad Asif (4/18) skittled the top order. India then bowled and fielded impressively to defend the total before Pakistan bounced back in the death overs riding on a 35-ball 53 from Misbah-ul-Haq, bringing down the equation to one required off two. However, he failed to finish the task with the match ending in a tie which called for a bowl-out, as per the then tournament rules. India won the tie-breaker 3-0 with Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa all hitting the stumps.

2007 - Final

10 days after their Durban thriller, India and Pakistan played out one of the most memorable games in World T20 history, this time at the Wanderers. Gautam Gambhir's 54-ball 75 dragged India to 157 for five, but it was the bowlers who put Pakistan out of contention for a win, bringing down the equation to 54 required from 24 balls with three wickets in hand. However, it was Misbah once again who threatened to make the improbable possible. Pakistan eventually needed six from four balls, but an error in judgment left their fans disappointed. Looking to avoid a last-ball finish, Misbah moved across to scoop the Joginder Sharma delivery to fine leg but it landed safely in the hands of Sreesanth. India won by five runs to lift the World T20 trophy.

2012 - Group Stage

Five years after those thrilling encounters, India and Pakistan met again at the World T20, but this time it was a lopsided contest with the Men in Blue scripting a comfortable eight-wicket victory. A clinical bowling show bundled out Pakistan for 128, the lowest total in the Super Eight stage of that edition. Virat Kohli, who only a few days back scored 183 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, single-handedly completed the chase for India with his 61-ball 78.

2014 - Group Stage

Another stroll in the park for India as Pakistan, trying too many things in vain, showed similar signs of anxiousness. The spinners picked three wickets at an economy rate of 5.25 in 12 overs as Pakistan finished with 130 for seven. India comfortably chased down the target in 18.3 overs with Shikhar Dhawan (30), Virat Kohli (36*) and Suresh Raina (35*) all contributing equally.

2016 - Group Stage

The last game played between the two sides in World T20 was in Kolkata, five years back. The rain had reduced the game to 18 overs but did not dampen the spirits. Shoaib Malik and Umar Akmal's late blitz added 48 runs off 32 balls, yet Pakistan finished with just 118 for five. Mohammad Sami and Mohammad Amir picked three wickets between themselves to rattle the top order before Yuvraj Singh soaked in the pressure to score a 23-ball 24, ably assisting Kohli (37 off 55) to stitch a match-winning partnership of 61 runs as India chased down the target in 15.5 overs.

Earlier, Virat Kohli ’s half-century helped India recover from a disastrous start and post 151/7 against Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup match on Sunday. Besides Kohli’s 49-ball 57, Rishabh Pant slammed 39 in 30 deliveries.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and invited India to bat first but the early blows were landed by the men in green as openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul departed within three overs. Kohli and Pant then joined forces to add 53 runs in quick time before the latter was caught out by leg-spinner Shadab Khan (1/22 in four overs) off his own bowling in the 13th over.

Brief scores:

India:  151/7 in 20 overs (Virat Kohli 57, Rishabh Pant 39; Shaheen Afridi 3/31) vs Pakistan.

Pakistan: 152/0 in 17.5 overs (Babar Azam 68 not out, Mohammad Rizwan 79 not out).

India (Playing XI): Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja , Bhuvneshwar Kumar , Mohammed Shami , Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah.

It was as if a switch had been flicked. Virat Kohli jaunted down the pitch and blasted Shaheen Shah Afridi over long-on in the fifth over. The shot was not unusual, but the situation was. India had lost both their openers in the most high-pressure game of the tournament, and one wouldn’t expect the captain to unfurl a stroke so fraught with risk.

This was the team's effort, and the early wickets were very helpful. It gave us a lot of confidence and our spinners were very good as well. We applied our plans and got the results. We, the openers, kept it simple and built a partnership and because the wicket was getting better so we just wanted to keep batting till the end, which we did. It won't get easier just because we beat India. We will take the confidence, but we're taking it one match at a time, and there's a long way to go in the tournament. We prepared well, and just kept the history out of our mind. We needed quality practice, and warm-up matches, and even our domestic tournament and those games gave us a lot of confidence.

We didn't execute properly. Credit where it's due and Pakistan outplayed us today. They started brilliantly with the ball, and 3 wickets for 20 runs was not a good start. We needed wickets early but with the bat they gave us absolutely no chances. It played slow in the first half and hitting through the line was not that easy as it was in the second half, after 10 overs. We needed those 15-20 extra runs an for that we needed a good start but Pakistan's bowling didn't allow us to get those extra runs. We could make the argument of getting in another slower bowler, but it's important to stay composed and understand our strengths, because with the dew the slower bowlers couldn't be effective either. This is just the first game of the tournament, not the last.

It is the good wishes of my parents and all Pakistanis. Very happy with my performance. The plan was to bring the ball back in. I was just trying to swing it and I was just looking to give the team a breakthrough. That was what I practiced in the nets as well yesterday. Batting against the new ball was tough. The credit goes to Babar and Rizwan for the way they played. All teams are good in the tournament and we will look to carry this momentum through and go to the finals.

Aaaaaand WHACKKK!!! Shami goes for a 6 in the very first ball of the 18th over. This might not even last 20 overs. And double fours in the 3rd and 4th ball. India has never lost a T20 match by 10 wickets. History all around. And Pakistan have done it. They have beaten India for the first time in a World Cup match. Pakistan win by 10 wickets.

How do you celebrate your game-changing 50 in an India-Pakistan game? If you are Babar Azam you barely lift your bat and try to hide behind your batting partner. Unlike any of Pakistan's captains, Babar has a subtle and nuanced approach to his batting and also his captaincy. He is measured in his batting and also in his communication with the players. When Shaheen Shah Afridi was having a horror of a last over, he didn't throw up his arms or shout at him for the totally uncalled-for overthrow. Babar is from the Kane Williamson and Eoin Morgan school of leadership, he has a restrained aggression, such a rare gift. While his opening partner Rizwan would get frustrated on missing out the countless short balls that the Indian bowlers bowled, Babar would walk down and talk to his junior. On one occasion, he actually hit a ball over the fence as if to show Rizwan, how it was done. Considering how important the game has been for Pakistan, Babar gave a template to his team how they should approach these pressure situations.

Pakistan are slowly inching towards history as they are within touching distance of a maiden World Cup victory over India. After 17 overs they sit comfortably at 135/0. Pakistan need 17 off 18 now. Can someone bowl a 2-run over and inject some tension into this chase? Because this is getting academic at the moment. This is the fourth 100+ partnership between Babar & Rizwan in T20Is in 2021 - no other pair has scored more than two in a calendar year. Now, Shami to bowl the 18th over. Let's see.

Pakistan wicket keepers have been a thorn in the flesh of the opposition over the years... think Rasheed Latif, Moin Khan, Sarfaraz Ahmed. Not the most classy, but clever batsmen who possessed a get out of jail shot to complement their pushes, nudges and sweeps. And they come as ready-made busy bodies. The latest avatar being Mohammad Rizwan, unorthodox with the bat. Rizwan was in the thick of things, taking two sharp diving catches and milking the leg-side as an opener in the chase and running like a hare when he chose to. When he didn't want to run, he was like a drill-master. His shrill 'no' is one of the loudest in the game. It was like he was admonishing his captain and opening partner Babar Azam. Pakistan's best batsman trusted his 'keeper's judgement just like he placed faith in him during a productive opening partnership.

Bumrah is back to bowl the 15th over as Jadeja ended the 14th over with 11 runs which included two boundaries. The Pakistan openers show no sign of slowing down. And Bumrah is meted with te same treatment. A four off the second ball. And a 50 for Rizwan as well. India are leaking runs at the moment. I am stuggling to remember the last over which didn't consist a boundary. 9 off the 15th over. Pakistan 121/0 after 15 overs.Babar Azam -- FIFTY | 40 balls | 4 fours | 2 sixesMohammad Rizwan -- FIFTY | 41 balls | 3 fours | 2 sixesThis is the highest partnership for Pakistan against India in T20IsThey are bossing this! Varun has come to bowl the 13th over and it's turning out to be an unlucky one for India as he gets hit for two sixes. One from Rizwan who slog-swept that high over cow corner for six and one from Babar. And with that 6, Azam gets his 50. He hangs fully back and launches a drag-down over deep mid-wicket for a gigantic six. Expensive over. 16 off it. Pakistan 101/0 after 13 overs.

However hard this slam bang format tries to keep conventional strokes out of the game, Virat Kohli keeps them relevant. So there he was playing text book cricket deep in the T20 innings as the army of Indian fans wanted him to smash the ball out of the ground. In the 16th over Hassan Ali was keeping him in the crease by bowling short. Kohli showed that he wouldn't allow the bowler to curtail the run flow. Of his two boundaries, the second one would have had Test cricket followers drooling. Kohli leaned into the ball and placed it between extra cover and mid off. Both thought they had a chance to stop the ball but both were fooled, such was the perfect placement. The bat didn't flow down with force but it was just placed with such precision that the ball hit it in the middle as it was coming down. Kohli showed you didn't need to be a slogger to be relevant in T20 cricket.

On the world stage, India took the knee. After they were asked to bat after Pakistan won the toss, the Indian players did it to lend support to the Black Lives Matter movement. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul took the knee inside the playing area, while the other players did it outside the boundary rope, near the dug-out.

Babar Azam has really taken charge now. Bumrah gets hit for a 4 in the fourth ball of the 11th over. A wide half-volley, and Babar frees his arms to lift it over the leaping fielder at extra-cover, and to the left of mid-off. India need something special to dig them out of this pit. 9 off the over.

“Shaheen, kabhi toh has ley tu!” (Laugh sometimes!)” Shaheeen Afridi’s coach Ayaz Akbar Yousafzai would often tell the pacer when he was about 14-15. On Sunday, Shaheen would almost let out a smile, as he stood feet wide apart and air kissed in his signature style after knocking out Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in the space of 10 balls. If not for Virat Kohli, it might well have been the end of India as that was a Thank you, come again, kind of special spell.

And Azam has started the 10th over just like he ended the 9th. With a 4 this time. India need a wicket desperately and they need it quick. But that's probably not forthcoming soon.9 off the over. Pakistan 71/0 after 10 overs as we go for a drinks break.

? overs done. The Pakistan openers have timed the chase well, with the score at 71/0. #T20WorldCup | #INDvPAK | https://t.co/UqPKN2ouME pic.twitter.com/9P3q1w4Cer — T20 World Cup (@T20WorldCup) October 24, 2021

And a 6 by Azam to Jadeja. Clubs it over deep midwicket! First boundary in four overs, and it's a maximum. This is dropped marginally short at middle stump and Babar swivels and hits with the intention of clearing the shorter side. And he does. Pakistan 66/0 after 9 overs.

Virat Kohli and Hassan Ali were locked in a duel for the majority of the Pakistani pacer's spell, with the Indian captain taking the bragging rights. Kohli — who scored four of his five boundaries off Ali  — was reading the bowler like a book. Understandably then, he chose to share some of the knowledge with partner Ravindra Jadeja. After crossing over for a single, Kohli turned towards Jadeja and rolled his fingers across an imaginary ball, gesturing for an incoming slower ball. The next delivery was perhaps a blip. Ali fired it in short and down the leg side, and Jadeja gleefully helped it over the short fine leg. Buoyed by the boundary, Jadeja forgot Kohli's lesson. Ali then bowled it full and slow, fooling Jadeja with the change of pace, who was early on the shot and holed out to deep midwicket.

Varun in to bowl the 8th over. Jadeja had a great 7th over with just 3 runs off it. What can Varun pull off here. 5 runs off the first 5 balls, including a wide. A couple of good overs by India. 50 up for pak though. 6 runs off this over as Pakistan are 52/0 after 8 overs.

Last over of the poweplay. Bhuvi to bowl. Not a great start as he bowls a wide ball to begin the over.Pakistan are steadily ticking away as they keep adding 2s and singles. Pakistan 43/0 after 6 overs. Shami to bowl the 5th over and he is hit for a 4 in the third ball. Graceful as ever. Not a great ball though. Full and into leg stump. He leans in and offers the full face as he chips it wide of mid-on. And he follows it up with another boundary.  Shortish slower delivery on the stumps, again on the leg-side, Rizwan pulls behind square. After Varun's great over, Pakistan adjusts the score back to where they want it. 11 off the over. Pakistan 35/0 after 5 overs.

A proper good over by India as Bumrah is introduced in the attack. Just 4 runs off it as he helps stem the run flow after the previous 2 overs both went for some boundaries. Pakistan 22/0 after 3 overs.

Babar and Rizwan walk out as India have a chat in the huddle. Bhuvneshwar will open the attack for India. Rizwan has hit one to the boundary and it looked like it was saved. Close call as Varun flicks it back in. His left hand is touching the boundary as he lets go a backhand flick with the right hand. Third umpire deems the ball hadn't left his hand quick enough. And he hits a maximum to follow. Pakistan off to a great start. 10 off the first over. Pakistan 10/0 after 1 over.

150 comes up for India. Good comeback for India after a slow start. Pakistan were superb with the ball and on the field for most part, and they've done very well to restrict India to 151. India, for their part, have done well to get there, having been three down inside the powerplay. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant's knocks have helped India immensely to post a respectable total. Over to the bowlers now.

The last over begins. Haris Rauf to ball. And he has got Hardik Pandya. Big wicket again. He looks to hit it with a straight bat over the bowler's head, but he ends up skewing it over the off side, and deep cover runs in and takes it close to the 30-yard circle. India 146/6 after 146/7 after 19.3 overs

Absolute chaos in the last ball of the 19th over. The original ball was a no ball that got to the boundary. A good free-hit ball, bouncer slanting across and finishing around the right shoulder. Pandya misses the pull, and tries to run a quick single to retain the strike. Rizwan's underarm throw misses at his end, then the bowler picks the ball up and flings a wild throw past the stumps at his end, and it rushes away too quickly for long-on to stop to his right. India 146/6 after 19 overs

They say life imitates art. Though in these times of packaged sentiments, an instinctive reaction may imitate an emoji. And so it was when Hasan Ali bent his back to get that effortful bounce trying to tease (but not quite) an edge from Kohli as India tried to accelerate the scoring rate on the final straight. A halfway swing of the bat to steer it to third man would see Kohli not quite find the timing on that shot, and Mohammad Rizwan would collect the shooter. Rizwan would do the shrug shoulder with palms upturned, indicating he wasn't sure if the dangerous batter had nicked. Unlike the shoulder gesture that bookends statements that can mean 'who cares' to 'who knows', this was more of a 'well, nope'. An appeal had begun gaining decibel, but was stubbed by the keeper. Hasan Ali couldn't stop Kohli, but got Jadeja the next over.

Jadeja departs now. He is caught by (sub)Mohammad Nawaz. Was looking steady. India lose another important wicket. He's looking to hit over mid-on initially but he's early on the shot, reaching well in front of his body, and then tries to adjust by bringing his wrists into the shot. All that does is send the ball down the throat of deep midwicket. India 127/5 after 18 overs.

3* - Virat Kohli 1 - Yuvraj Singh 1 - Gautam Gambhir 1 - Robin Uthappa

Hasan Ali to Kohli, 2 runs, pacy short of length delivery, big gap at mid-wicket. Kohli is one of the swiftest runners these days, And he Jadeja with skates on too. That's a knock it around fifty from the Indian captain. Another one against Pakistan. He had to play this way because Shaheen's early wickets.

Kohli is holding down India's fort as he hits two fours off this over. For the first one, Kohli turns his wrists over on top of the bounce and whips it to the left of the fielder. For the second one, he strides forward and just jabs that drive to the right of the diving extra-cover fielder. 10 off the over. India 110/4 after 16 overs.

Left-arm pace, fast, in-swing and just the right amount of it. In the 80s and 90s, one bowler with this ace up his sleeve was Wasim Akram and he often struck early blows in games between the arch-rivals. He was perhaps a touch slower than the lankier Shaheen Shah Afridi, who pierced out both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul with the ball that came in. Rohit and Rahul would have expected Afridi to bend it back in, but at that pace and a length which cramped them, they could do little. The walk back to the pavilion seemed longer than usual for Rohit, even for those watching on TV. Usually he wears a slight smirk in such moments of despair. But today it was a plain ashen face. He had been flummoxed by the left-arm pacers' oldest magic trick.

Earlier this year Shahid Afridi confirmed the engagement of his eldest daughter to Shaheen Afridi by saying: "We are not relatives but Shaheen’s family was approaching us for the last two years with the proposal. I asked my daughter and we made the decision together. We Afridis have eight tribes, Shaheen and we belong to different tribes," he said. Later in a tweet, he would also say "my prayers are with Shaheen for his continued success on and off the field". Very early in the game against Pakistan, Shaheen did what his father-in-law would have dreamt - he got both the Indian openers to give his team a head-start. Not an overly aggressive pacer he didn't exchange words or show the dressing room door to the batsmen, he merely stuck to his trademark spread-eagle pose and gave double flying kisses. Though, Shaheen holds the honour of fashioning the most underplayed celebration in world cricket. Once during the Pakistan Super League, he got the wicket of Shahid Afridi and hid his face with his hands. Shaheen also got the '10' number shirt that the original Afridi wore. After he was given the honour, he tweeted: "This is more than a shirt number. It represents honesty, integrity and immense love for Pakistan. I am humbled and honored that I will be now representing Pakistan in shirt # 10 of Lala." Lala? Who calls his father-in-law Lala?  Well, an Afridi of course.

And a maximum from Pant. It's a one-handed swipe. Down he goes on his back knee, and off comes the bottom hand, and he extends his front arm fully and whips it over the square leg boundary And another one to follow, this one one-handed as well Pant uses the extra leverage he gets to meet the ball well in front of his body and lift it with a straight bat over the long-off boundary. Mid-off was in, and he just cleared the boundary. 15 off the over. India 81/3 after 12 overs.

With no Shardul Thakur, India only bat until 7 today. A couple of wickets around now will put Pakistan right on top. Haris Rauf comes into the attack. Over the wicket to Pant. India really haven't got that big explosive over. Pakistan have kept this very tidy. Just 6 off the 11th over. Indai 66/3 after 11 overs.

Hafeez comes in to bowl the 8th over. Rizwan is convinced he has Pant caught behind. Erasmus says no. Pakistan have reviewed immediately. It's ultimately not out. India 43/3 after 8 overs.

Kohli finishes off the last over of Powerplay with a 4 as Pakistan rocks India. India need to buck up. India 36/3 after 6 overs. This is brilliant bowling till now without doubt. A couple of good looking shots as well. But the pitch looks slow. Hitting through the off looks very difficult. This might turn into another low score thriller between these 2 teams.

Now, SKY is also gone as it's taken by Rizwan behind the wicket. Yadav's cameo ends as India keep losing wickets. India 31/3 after 5.4 overs.

And Kohli takes charge now. Hits a 6 off Afridi. After SKY hit a 4 and a 6 in the last ball of the last two overs, India has started to set a pace for themselves. India 30/2 after 5 overs.

IND vs PAK, T20 WC

Former Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal’s mind goes back to the early 1980s. Shyam Bhatia, an Indian expat in Dubai and a cricket patron, recollects Javed Miandad’s six against Chetan Sharma. For the old-timers, an India-Pakistan match in the United Arab Emirates will always be about nostalgia, irrespective of its venue-switch from Sharjah to Dubai.

As India and Pakistan play their T20 World Cup group league fixture here Sunday — the first time the two teams are playing in three years — the Sharjah throwback becomes relevant, for it was the starting point of the game’s most-followed cricket rivalry at a neutral venue. ( READ MORE )

Global Warfare: India's Nuclear Testing.              Within the last decade, India and Pakistan's ongoing struggle with Kashmir has peaked due to nuclear warfare testing. The testing not only aggravated the situation in Southern Asia, but has also worsened the global condition. Tension with Pakistan, lack of support from the United States, and non-prioritized money control are all reasons why India should halt nuclear testing.              The conflict between India and Pakistan has revolved around Kashmir. Kashmir is the pride of India; with its mountain ranges, beautiful landscape, fresh mountain air and lovely people. Kashmir is located at the extreme west of the country. At the time of Pakistan's independence, the Muslim majority area of Kashmir was to be part of Pakistan. The majority of India practices the religion of Hinduism, but eighty percent of Kashmir practices the religion of Muslim. However, Kashmir did not become part of Pakistan because India claims it as Indian Territory. The people of Kashmir, the Pakistanis, and the United Nations reject the Indian claim. .              Currently Pakistan governs about one-third of Kashmir while India administers the rest under military force. India has been ruling with brutal force towards the Kashmiris. India's streak of slaughters has resulted in more than thirty thousand deaths. In an attempt to halt the fatalities, government officials and political leaders from both countries have made numerous threats along the "Line of Control" in Kashmir, the Himalayan region that was at the center of two of three Indo-Pak wars. .              The aggravation from the Kashmir conflict encouraged the advancement of nuclear testing. On May 11, 1998, India conducted nuclear weapons tests for the first time since 1974, and the Indian government declared it would maintain a nuclear weapons program. In response to India's testing, Pakistan later ignited three nuclear devices of its own, setting off worldwide concerns about a nuclear war in the South Asian subcontinent.
