The Tau Sigma Honor Society is an honor society created exclusively for transfer students. Their main goal is to promote the involvement and leadership of transfer students within their university. Each year, The Tau Sigma Honor Society Scholarship offers awards for transfer students throughout the country ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Any student who is a member of Phi Theta Kappa has a shot at the Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education $5,000 Scholarship , which was created to help students planning to transfer to a four-year university from any community college. The minimum requirements are at least a 3.5 GPA and between 12 and 36 semester hours.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is another scholarship for students heading to a four-year institution after attending a community college, the minimum requirement to be eligible for this transfer student scholarship is a 3.5 GPA.

Amount: Up to $24,000

Lebanon Valley College offers transfer scholarships ranging from $16,000 to $24,000 each year, based on academic achievements. Good news – you don’t have to worry about sending in a scholarship application. Your admission transfer counselor at the college will ensure your application is considered for merit scholarships.

Amount: $6,000 to $9,000

The University of Tampa offers scholarships for transfer students with 3.0+ GPAs. As a medium-sized private university, UT has a distinguished faculty and approximately 9,304 students from all 50 states and 132 countries. Their 200 academic programs are taught by a faculty as passionate about students’ success as they are about their areas of expertise. And, of course, you can study in warm, sunny Florida!

Amount: $13,000 to $20,000

When applying to Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, transfer students are automatically considered for merit-based transfer scholarships . A minimum GPA of 2.7 and 15 transferable credits are required and the awards range from $13,000 to $20,000. The best part? The reward is renewable throughout your time at Augustana.

Amount: $11,500 to $15,500

With a GPA of at least 3.0 and 12 transferable credits, students are considered for these scholarships at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.

Amount: $2,500 for resident students & $1,500 for commuter students

Students planning to attend Bridgewater College who are also members of the Church of the Brethren can reduce their tuition bill by up to $2,500 per year by applying to the Church of the Brethren Scholarship.

Amount: $9,500 to $14,000

Transfer students planning to attend Heidelburg University at the Tiffin, Ohio campus are automatically considered for generous transfer scholarships to help ease the cost of tuition. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and at least 15 transferable semester hours.

Amount: Up to $16,000

Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio offers annual transfer scholarship awards between $12,000 and $16,000. These awards may be  renewable for up to three years. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate academic excellence. Students who are Phi Theta Kappa members might also be eligible to receive a special scholarship award.

Providing up to $10,000 towards tuition, the Johnson & Wales University Transfer Scholarship is renewable for up to four years…meaning you can save some serious cash! Applicants are automatically considered on the basis of academic transcripts when submitting the admissions application.

Amount: $18,000 to $24,000

Incoming students will be automatically considered for the Lycoming College Transfer Student Scholarship when submitting an admissions application. These scholarships for transfer students are offered to students with at least 24 transferable credit hours and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Plus, they’re renewable for up to four years!

Amount: $500 to $1,000

The Minnesota State University at Moorhead Scholarship welcomes transfer students by offering them $500 to $1,000 in financial aid. To be considered after submitting your admissions application, you’ll need a minimum GPA of 3.0 and at least 24 transferable credit hours.

Amount: $6,000

Renewable for up to three years, the New Mexico Tech Phi Theta Kappa $6,000 Transfer Scholarship is open to members of Phi Theta Kappa planning to transfer to New Mexico Tech. You should have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and 45 transferable credits to be up for consideration with your admissions application.

Amount: $8,000 to $15,000

If you’re planning to transfer to Niagara University as a full-time student and have a minimum GPA of 2.5, you’ll automatically be considered for thousands of dollars in financial aid. Plus, the Niagara University Transfer Scholarship is renewable for up to three years!

Northwood University provides a variety of scholarships for transfer students…and all of them come with the option to renew each year! Students with a GPA of at least 2.7 will be considered with their admissions application, but keep in mind that some scholarships have limited funds, so not all eligible students will receive an award.

Amount: $2,000

Renewable for up to two years, the Award for Excellence Transfer Scholarship is available to students applying to Grand Valley State University after studying at any community college in Michigan. If your GPA is at least 2.5, you’ll be automatically considered with your admissions application.

Amount: Full Tuition

Paying for college just got much less stressful with this full-tuition Community College Excellence Scholarship from the University of Alabama. To be automatically considered, students should have at least a 3.5 GPA and be transferring from a community college.

Amount: $4,000

Available to non-residents of Kentucky who are transferring to the University of Kentucky, this $4,000 Transfer Achievement Scholarship is awarded to students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and at least 24 transferable credit hours. Candidates are automatically considered upon submission of an admissions application.

Each year, the University of Maryland awards several full-tuition and multiple partial-tuition Frederick Douglas Scholarships for transfer students. All you need is a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an Associate’s degree from a Maryland community college.

Amount: 50% of tuition and fees

If getting good grades is your thing and you plan to transfer to Florida International University, this Transfer Academic Achievement Scholarship will cover 50% of your tuition and fees. To get this highly-competitive award, you’ll need a minimum of 60 transferable credit hours or an Associate’s degree, a 4.0 GPA, two letters of recommendation, and a killer essay.

Based on academic performance, transfer students applying to Loyola University are automatically considered for up to $19,000 in Transfer Merit Scholarships upon the submission of their admissions application.

With at least 48 hours of transferable credits and a 3.5 or higher GPA, you’ll be eligible for this transfer scholarship at Mississippi State University.

Amount: $5,000 to $16,000

Transfer students are automatically considered for the Presidental Transfer Scholarship when they submit their admissions application to the University of Miami. The minimum requirement is a GPA of 3.75, but not all eligible students will receive an award.

Requiring a separate application, the Pathway Award at Wayne State University is available to students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and at least 24 transferable credit hours.

Academics is a significant reason students choose to transfer schools. Some students are looking for a more rigorous academic program than the one they are currently enrolled in.

Some students choose to look for a less stressful academic program instead. Any students looking for a change in pace may want to consider transferring schools.

In either case, students need to get good grades and get the most they can out of their academic experience in college. In addition, since transfer students will need to reapply to colleges, good grades can improve their chances of being accepted to a new school.

Is it hard to get scholarships as a transfer student?

Getting scholarships as a transfer student is no harder than as a college freshman. The college application process as a transfer student is almost identical to the college application process high school seniors go through. 

Similarly, applying for transfer scholarships is just like applying to scholarship programs as a regular college student. The only difference is that now, transfer students will be eligible to apply for transfer scholarships as well .

Transfer scholarships are financial aid opportunities that are only available to transfer students. Since these scholarship programs are made purposefully to support transfer students during their college transition, regular students cannot apply for scholarships for transfer students. 

Transfer students can also apply to all other scholarship opportunities , just like regular students. As a transfer student, you can and should apply for other scholarships, such as merit, academic, major, and more. When applying for a regular scholarship, transfer students will not be judged more severely or favorably than regular students. Being a transfer student will not increase or decrease your chances of winning money from scholarship programs. 

Is it easier to get accepted as a transfer student?

In some cases, yes, it is easier to be accepted as a transfer student when compared to incoming freshman acceptance rates. Certain prestigious institutions, for example, have higher transfer student acceptance rates than their normal rates . 

The discrepancy between the transfer student acceptance rate and the regular acceptance rate can be due to many factors. For prestigious institutions, it may be because incoming freshman applications are so highly competitive that the acceptance rate becomes extremely low. 

However, every school will experience some student dropouts or transfer students every year . This means that there are now open slots in the undergraduate class— which allows students to transfer in. Looking at the student retention rate of a university may also provide some insight into student satisfaction and happiness at that school. 

Schools that have a very high retention rate may have a lower transfer student acceptance rate . Schools with low retention rates will likely be easier for transfer students to get accepted. 

While this is not always the case, transfer students should make sure to look up the transfer student acceptance rate , not the regular rates. Retention rates may indicate how satisfied students are with a certain school.

Some students plan to transfer to their ideal school instead of applying there right after high school. This might be due to a number of reasons. As mentioned, sometimes students want a chance to improve their grades first before applying to their dream school. 

What school is best for transfer students?

The university that is best for transfer students depends entirely on the needs of the individual student. As mentioned before, transfer students choose to change schools for a variety of different reasons, which are all dependent on the situation of the student.

Transfer students should choose the best school for them based on what they found lacking in their current school . For example, a student who feels their current school is unsupportive of students or too academically competitive could consider transferring to schools with smaller communities and more resources to promote student wellbeing.

If students choose to transfer schools because their academic interests have changed, it’s important to make sure that they transfer to a school with the academic program they want. Transfer students should undergo the same research process high school seniors undergo when applying for college.

Though it’s not difficult to transfer schools, students should not plan on transferring more than once during their undergraduate years . Attempting to transfer multiple times in four years may cause you to lose more college class credits during the transitions, setting you back in your academic career. 

As a result, students should know what they want in their secondary school and make an informed decision . Transfer students should carefully consider why they want to leave their current school and how their second school could address that problem. 

Students attending community college often choose to transfer schools. On the flip side, many current community college students previously attended a four-year college and chose to transfer away. Community college transfers make up a large part of the transfer student demographic . 

High school students might plan to attend community college for a few years before transferring to a four-year university. Some students see community college as a good stepping stone between high school and college . This can help community college students improve their grades so that their chances of being accepted at a four-year college are higher. 

Conversely, college students might transfer to a community college for location, academics, or social reasons. Community colleges are often smaller schools that have a more relaxed atmosphere. In addition, many community colleges emphasize taking care of the emotional and social needs of community college students. 

Students uncomfortable at their current school should strongly consider transferring to a different college. There is no right or wrong reason for transferring and no right or wrong school to transfer to.

Transfer students should prioritize their happiness and education when transferring schools to ensure they are satisfied with their experience at their second college. 

What GPA do you need to get a full scholarship?

Typically, a full scholarship is a very competitive financial aid opportunity since it will cover most, if not all, of your college expenses. As a result, only students who demonstrate academic excellence will be awarded full scholarships. Read more here about what GPA you need to get a full scholarship and how to get a full scholarship .

However, academic excellence is not the only criterion for receiving a full scholarship. Transfer students with demonstrated financial need may also be able to get a full scholarship.

Many schools implement financial aid policies that ensure accepted students can afford tuition. In most cases, this means the amount a student must pay in tuition will correspond to their family income. 

Students who are accepted into the university but do not have the means to pay any money towards their tuition may receive full scholarships. 

Do transfer students get the FAFSA?

Your chances of getting financial aid will not be affected by the fact that you are a transfer student. 

Transfer students can fill out the FAFSA and apply to financial aid programs like incoming freshmen . Apply to as many scholarships for transfer students and other college scholarships as you can. Contact the financial aid offices of the schools you are applying to and find out what forms they require for financial aid purposes.

At Columbia College and Columbia Engineering , we’re intentional in our efforts to welcome over 125 transfer students each year, from a range of two- and four-year institutions, and we value the unique and diverse perspectives they bring to our community.

Transfer Applicants FAQs

May i transfer from columbia college to the engineering school (or vice-versa) once accepted and enrolled.

If you are enrolled at either Columbia College or Engineering and you genuinely feel that you should attend the other, you may apply as an internal transfer student. Internal transfers must submit the Internal Transfer Application by March 1. There is no guarantee that you will be able to transfer to a different school. Undergraduate Admissions consults with the Berick C enter for Student Advising to review your academic performance and curriculum and determine if a change is appropriate.

Are there any scholarships available for transfers?

There are no academic, athletic or talent-based institutional scholarships at Columbia, as all of our institutional financial aid is need-based. However, our students are often the recipients of merit-based scholarships from outside organizations (state grants/scholarships, local/national merit-based awards, etc.).

May I transfer for the spring semester?

No. We do not accept applications for January/spring enrollment from transfer candidates.

Columbia-Specific Application Questions

Applicants are asked to respond to Columbia-specific questions to tell the Admissions Committee more about their academic, extracurricular and intellectual interests. These questions allow us to better understand your intellectual curiosity, habits of mind, love of learning and sense of self. These questions also allow the Admissions Committee to learn more about you in your current community and why you feel Columbia’s distinctive experiences in and out of the classroom would be a good fit for your undergraduate education.

Transcripts

Please submit transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended. Electronic transcripts are preferred for fastest processing . Please note that we receive many documents daily and that transcripts may take several days to process. 

We cannot accept transcripts submitted by applicants as official unless they are mailed in a signed, sealed envelope; electronic transcripts are official if they are sent directly from an institution and/or from a school official.

School Forms

The Transfer Report , which collects information about your standing at your current institution, should be completed by a school official such as an adviser, dean or registrar at your current institution. This form may accompany your official college transcript. Transfer Reports should be sent electronically to [email protected] if they cannot accompany your official transcript.

The Coalition Application Curriculum Report collects information about courses in which you are currently enrolled. Mid-term grades are often not available by March 1; we will accept this form until April 15 but strongly recommend that it be submitted as soon as mid-term grades are available. 

Curriculum Reports should be submitted electronically to [email protected] , or uploaded directly through your applicant portal. Please do not submit the curriculum report until mid-term grades are available. A curriculum report with grades listed as "in progress" or with no grades listed will not meet this requirement. 

The curriculum report is not required for students who are not currently enrolled in a college or attending a school that operates on the quarter system.

2 College Academic Recommendations

• These recommendations must come from college professors who have taught you in a college course. Recommendation letters should not come from high school teachers, employers, research supervisors or family members.
• An optional third recommendation may be accepted from an advising dean or academic adviser.

Standardized Tests

Columbia is test-optional for transfer applicants to Columbia College or Columbia Engineering. Please review our standardized testing policy for additional details, as well as our English language proficiency requirement if applicable. Transfer applicants who choose to submit test-scores may self-report their results and may submit scores up through March testing dates.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for enrollment as a transfer student at Columbia, you must have earned: 

• 24 points of credit (the equivalent of one year of full-time study) at another institution, or be registered to complete 24 points of credit by the time you enroll.
• If you left high school without receiving a diploma in order to attend an early college program, you are not eligible for transfer admission and must apply as a first-year student by the appropriate Early Decision or Regular Decision deadline. You will not be eligible to receive credit for such accelerated programs except for credit earned through standardized examinations (e.g., AP and IB exams); such credit will be limited to 16 points, the equivalent of one full semester at Columbia.

If you’re an International student, you should read our International Transfer Students section for additional eligibility requirements. 

Candidates who have completed  more than four semesters of college coursework elsewhere are not encouraged to apply. Columbia’s academic requirements and institutional policies make completion of all graduation requirements in a reasonable and timely fashion unlikely.

Columbia College transfer applicants who have taken a break in their education of more than a full year (for any reason other than required completion of national military service), or who wish to attend school part time, should consider applying instead to Columbia University’s School of General Studies.  

Columbia Engineering transfer applicants should proceed with this transfer application, regardless of any break in schooling. 

Please note that all transfer admittance is for fall semester only.  

Supplementary Materials

Supplementary materials are not a required part of our admissions process—but there are occasions where they can enhance our understanding of your application. (In other words, it’s completely up to you if you’d like to include these materials.)

Transfer Credit

You must have completed or be registered for 24 points of credit (the equivalent of one year of full-time study) at another institution. No more than 64 points in Columbia College or 68 points in Columbia Engineering will be awarded as transfer credit, including points earned through AP or IB examinations. We do not grant credit for college courses taken before a student's graduation from high school. Credit for standardized exams (e.g., AP, IB, A level exams) will be limited to 16 points, which is equivalent to one full semester at Columbia. For more detailed information, students should refer to the Academic Credit for Transfer Students section of the Berick Center for Student Advising website.

Please note that transfer credit evaluation occurs only at the time of acceptance. We cannot review transcripts and/or courses for transfer before a candidate submits an application.

Columbia does not award transfer credit for courses that are not analogous to those available at Columbia College or Columbia Engineering. We encourage you to review our College Bulletin and Engineering Bulletin to become familiar with the types of courses that are offered here and therefore the courses that are more likely to be awarded credit.

The Core is the cornerstone of undergraduate academic life at Columbia. Even those transferring in with advanced credit should expect to take elements of the Core, if not all of it. Students are very rarely exempt from Core classes like Literature Humanities , Contemporary Civilization , Art Humanities and Music Humanities .

Students are expected to graduate within eight semesters, including time spent at another college or university. Students are typically not permitted to extend their undergraduate studies unless they are enrolled in one of our Joint Degree programs (e.g. the Combined Plan ).

What We Look For in Transfer Students

Admission to Columbia is not based on a simple formula of grades and test scores. Instead, we consider a variety of factors . Each year, we admit a small group of transfer students to Columbia College and Columbia Engineering. Because space in the sophomore and junior classes is limited, admission is highly competitive. We typically admit fewer than 10 percent of the applicants for transfer admission each year. Potential transfers are expected to have a minimum GPA of 3.5 overall; Columbia Engineering candidates are strongly encouraged to have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their mathematics and science courses.

The majority of successful applicants to Columbia Engineering have completed an engineering track curriculum. For applicants with first-year standing at time of application this includes:

• Two semesters of Calculus
• Two semesters of Physics
• One semester of Chemistry

Enrolling transfer students will need to complete Core Curriculum requirements in addition to graduation requirements within their primary field of study. Our review takes into account a candidate's ability to complete their course of study in a standard timeline of eight total semesters. To allow more flexibility with course selection at Columbia, we recommend applying with first-year standing at your current institution when possible. 

Due to the timing of the transfer process, we are generally unable to consider grades earned in the second semester of the year of application; thus, high school grades, rigor of program and standardized test scores are all important in the evaluation of transfer credentials, especially for students applying for sophomore standing. If you have applied to Columbia previously, the documents you provided at that time will not roll over (with the exception of SAT or ACT scores); you must resubmit any information requested by this transfer application.

Financial Aid

At Columbia, we are committed to fully supporting our transfer community. All transfer applicants who are citizens, permanent residents or other eligible non-citizens are evaluated without regard to their financial need. Foreign students applying for aid must understand that such aid is awarded on an extremely limited basis. Columbia meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted transfer students and does not give any scholarships for academic, athletic or artistic merit.

We Invest in The Best and The Brightest

Transfer Merit Scholarships are automatically awarded to students who have completed 24 transferable hours post-high school graduation with a minimum 3.30 GPA. (Credits earned by exams, such as AP, IB, or CLEP tests, are not factored into GPA or transferable credit for scholarship consideration.

Transfer Merit Scholarships are limited to students seeking their first undergraduate degree.

Transfer students who have fewer than 24 hours may be considered for some first-year academic-based scholarships based on high school academic performance.

Renewal is based on the successful completion of at least 24 hours of coursework during the academic year (fall and spring semesters). At the conclusion of each spring semester, an SMU cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required.

Freshman Scholarships

The University of Oklahoma is committed to making a world-class education attainable. 

OU offers a variety of scholarships for admitted incoming freshmen. You must apply by December 15 to receive consideration. No additional application is required for OU’s merit-based awards. This list represents some of the general, university-centralized freshman scholarships for fall 2024, but is not all-inclusive. Applicants are encouraged to retake the ACT and/or SAT through April 30 and send their seventh semester transcript for scholarship update consideration. A student will be offered the highest tuition waiver based on their qualifications. Students cannot receive more than one merit-based award.

The University of Oklahoma uses scores from national or residual tests taken before April 30. Effective for students applying for the fall 2024 through fall 2025 semesters, OU will practice a  test-optional  admissions process when awarding scholarships. All applicants are automatically considered for scholarships when they apply by December 15, including students who apply as test-optional. We highly encourage students to submit their test scores to ensure the highest scholarships and the fastest notification of an award. For consideration for our highly selective academic, nomination-based awards, we encourage students to submit a test score. If extenuating circumstances with regard to access to testing exist, we will evaluate on a case by case basis.

OU will also  superscore ACT/SAT scores  and allow students to   self report scores   for admission and scholarship purposes. These scores must be verified at the time of enrollment.

OU's Office of Admissions and Recruitment also uses a standardized weighted GPA for scholarship awarding purposes. This is referred to as the student’s scholarship GPA. Scholarship GPA provides extra weight to AP, IB, A Level, Pre-AP, AS Level, honors, and concurrent or dual credit courses in a uniform manner across all applications. This standardized weighting process allows the admissions committee to account for the wide variety of weighting scales used at high schools, and for applicants from high schools that do not provide a weighted GPA, in an equitable manner during the scholarship awarding process.

Institutional scholarships, combined with other federal, state and/or institutional aid, should not exceed the published Cost of Attendance.

Resident Freshman Scholarships

This list represents some of the general, university-centralized freshman scholarships for fall 2024, but is not all-inclusive. Admitted students will be offered the highest scholarship listed in the chart below based on their qualifications. Students cannot receive more than one of these merit-based awards. Students may also qualify for additional need-based financial resources and are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

As a test-optional school for fall 2024 through fall 2025, OU will consider applicants holistically for scholarships, but it is highly encouraged to submit a test score to ensure the highest scholarship and the fastest notification of an award. To receive the Oklahoma State Regents’ Academic Scholars Program Award or Institutional Nominee scholarship from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, a student must have a test score on file.

Oklahoma residents who are ranked 1 or 2 in their class are considered for a $10,000 tuition waiver ($2,500 x 4 years). Does not stack with automatically awarded academic scholarships.

Oklahoma residents whose annual family income does not exceed $60,000 can enroll in Oklahoma’s Promise between eighth and 11th grade to earn a scholarship for college tuition. Visit  okhighered.org/okpromise  to learn more.

Crimson Commitment   guarantees scholarships and grants to cover tuition and average fees for an OU student who qualifies and receives Oklahoma’s Promise for four years. Tuition and fees will vary based on a student’s major.

Depending on your selected major of interest in the OU admissions application, you may have additional scholarship opportunities. If applicable, the application will prompt you to complete a short essay.

OU offers a one-time, $1,000 award to all admissible non-resident freshmen whose parent, step-parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent graduated from OU. Additional awards may be available from the Alumni Office on a competitive basis.

The University of Oklahoma offers a variety of scholarships to admitted transfer students based on criteria such as academics, leadership, community involvement, and extracurricular activities. There are two main categories of scholarships for transfer students: academic and competitive scholarships. Please note that for the purposes of these scholarships, you are only considered a transfer student if you have completed 24 college credit hours post high school graduation and haven't previously attended OU as a degree-seeking student.

A student will be offered the highest tuition waiver based on their qualifications. Students cannot receive more than one merit-based award.

The list below represents centralized scholarship programs for the Norman campus and for the OU Polytechnic Institute in Tulsa. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. You must apply for admission by March 1 for Fall and Summer entry terms or October 1 for Spring entry terms to be considered for transfer scholarships (Norman campus).  Apply for admission and scholarships at  apply.ou.edu . Students may also qualify for additional need-based financial resources and are encouraged to complete the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid  (FAFSA).

Resident Transfer Scholarships

The University of Oklahoma offers scholarships to international students based on your completed application for admission to the university and qualified SAT or ACT exam scores. Admissible, non-US citizens attending secondary school in a country other than the United States are eligible for the scholarships listed below.

You must apply for admission by December 15 to be considered for these scholarship opportunities. Applicants may retake the SAT and/or ACT exam and send updated, official exam results to the Office of International Admissions & Recruitment through April 30.  

Please be aware that if you are considered a nonresident alien for US tax purposes, any financial aid or scholarship amounts you receive may be subject to taxation under specific conditions. These conditions depend on whether the awards exceed qualified tuition and fees (referred to as ‘excess awards’) during the calendar year, your residency status throughout that year, and the existence of tax treaties between the US and your home country. Major FAFSA issues have left millions of students waiting on financial aid packages, unsure if they’ll be able to afford college next year. There’s not much you can do to speed up aid offers, but you can increase your odds of affording college by applying to scholarships .

It’s not too late to start your scholarship hunt. With this year’s FAFSA errors and delays , many scholarship providers have extended application deadlines.

“Families can’t control the government side and what's happening within institutions … but they do have control of researching for scholarships that would help them offset higher ed costs,” says James Lewis, president of the National Society of High School Scholars.

Students win roughly $7.4 billion in private scholarships and fellowships each year, according to the National Scholarship Providers Association. However, 39% of students don’t use any scholarships, according to a 2023 report by the private student loan lender Sallie Mae, potentially leaving free money on the table that could lower their college costs.

Here are some expert-approved tips to win last-minute scholarship money and lower your college costs, even if your financial aid offers remain in limbo.

Cast a wide net

Cover the most ground in your scholarship hunt by:

Searching the Labor Department’s Scholarship Finder , which allows you to sort through more than 9,500 scholarships, fellowships, grants and other aid opportunities. 

Asking your target schools about scholarships available to their students. 

Looking for scholarships offered in your community, in addition to the bigger, well-known scholarships. 

Asking your high school guidance counselor to point you in the right direction. 

Ideally, you should apply to enough scholarships to get in the running for three times the total amount of aid you’ll need for school, suggests Christopher Gray, founder of the free Sallie Mae-owned scholarship search tool Scholly. Gray says he won more than $1 million in scholarships to pay for his own undergraduate degree. So, if you need $50,000 to pay for school, apply to $150,000 worth of scholarships, and you may win enough of them to get close to your $50,000 goal.

Look for niche scholarships

Some scholarships are extremely specific and can be easier to win if you fit the qualifying criteria. Consider what makes you unique: volunteer work, athletics, jobs, academic interests, religion, family military status and more.

“If there's individual merit that a student has, or passions or things that distinguish them, if they use Google and put ‘scholarships’ plus that term that describes their uniqueness, they'd be surprised how many scholarships are available, and that they can be applied to right now,” Lewis says.

Scholarships that require a lot of work — like a long list of required essays — can also be easier to win, Gray says, because fewer students want to do labor-intensive applications.

Get organized

Staying organized can help you maximize your scholarship award potential. You can use a scholarship tracker or build your own spreadsheet to keep track of deadlines and application requirements.

Treat scholarship applications like college applications, Lewis suggests. Ask someone to proofread your essays, and reach out to teachers or other adults in your life for recommendation letters.

Create an application work schedule. Maybe that involves dedicating a weekend or two to scholarship applications or setting aside a few hours each night to work on them. Start submitting applications as soon as possible because it may take weeks or months before you get a final award decision.

Tell a story

In the era of artificial intelligence, it’s more important than ever to be authentic when you’re writing your scholarship application essays.

And don’t just rehash your resume — focus on one impactful moment and tell that story, Gray says.

Lewis adds: “We all have stories to share about some of the things that we've struggled with and things that we want to overcome and accomplish.”

Write efficiently

Many scholarships include the same or similar essay prompts like asking about your community service or where you see yourself in five years. When possible, tailor your existing essays slightly for each application, rather than starting from scratch each time, Gray advises. This can help you save time and submit the most applications possible.

As a guideline, keep your essays at around 500 words or less, even if the maximum word count is higher, Gray says: “These essay readers are reading a lot of essays, so you really have to make sure that you can get a point across and be able to tell a story and convey your message in a way that's concise.”

Wait to report scholarship awards

Many schools have a “packaging policy,” which outlines how external scholarship awards will impact other financial aid you may receive. In some cases, schools may replace each dollar that it has given you with every scholarship dollar you bring in. This can negate your hard work applying to and winning scholarships.

Contact your college’s financial aid office to understand how exactly the school treats external scholarship awards.

Gray advises students to wait to report external scholarship awards to their college until after they've committed to the school and finalized their financial aid offer. That can minimize the odds that the school will reduce their original financial aid package as a result of scholarship money, he says.

Don’t forget the FAFSA

No matter how much scholarship money you bring in, it’s still essential to submit the FAFSA if you haven’t already. The form unlocks federal financial aid, including federal student loans, grants and work-study programs. Some external scholarship applications require you to submit the FAFSA, too.

The FAFSA will also put you in the running for the need-based Pell Grant , an award of up to $7,395 per year that you don’t repay. Eligibility isn’t tied to income alone, so you could qualify even if you don’t think you will.

The “Making the Leap” Scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are transferring to another educational institution in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. We know that getting from point A to point B isn’t always straightforward, and that sometimes there are twists, turns, and unexpected detours along the way. If you’re a transfer student making the leap to another school, you probably know what we’re talking about. Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation establishes $5,000 transfer scholarship for SUNY Sullivan students

LOCH SHELDRAKE—The Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation has partnered with the SUNY Sullivan Foundation to create the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation Transfer Scholarship. This transfer scholarship is designed to assist a student graduating from SUNY Sullivan with an associate’s degree to continue their education when they transfer to a SUNY college to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a State University of New York (SUNY) school. That critical need is now being addressed.

Funding for this scholarship is being provided by the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation, Inc. (WLNF), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 2022, and composed of Wolf Lake homeowners engaged in philanthropic activities in the towns of Thompson and Mamakating.

“Education is the cornerstone of empowerment, and we believe in providing opportunities for all members of our community to thrive,” said Don Kennedy, a co-founder and current Board member of the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation. “This donation reflects our commitment to foster a culture of support and investment in the future of our neighbors.”

“In establishing the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation Transfer Scholarship for SUNY Sullivan students, WLNF is not only establishing a legacy of generosity and commitment to educational achievement, but also nurturing the growth and prosperity of our entire community,’ said Dr. Kathleen Crabill, SUNY Sullivan Officer in Charge. “Through this initiative, WLNF is supporting pathways to success provided by publicly funded education and fostering a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.”

“The uniqueness of the WLNF Scholarship is that it addresses the financial need of students with a track record of academic success, reducing the financial challenges to furthering their education at a four-year school,” said Jose Herrera, SUNY Sullivan Foundation Chair.”

The SUNY Sullivan Foundation recently partnered with the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan (CFOS) for the administration and management of the college’s scholarship programs.

“The Community Foundation is looking forward to working with SUNY Sullivan to bolster it’s scholarship program for the greater benefit of area students,” said Elizabeth Rowley, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.

The initial Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation Transfer Scholarship award is $5,000 for 2024. Interested students should complete the application and provide a brief essay on their career goals. To be awarded, a recipient must also:

• Be a resident of Mamakating or Thompson;
• Have graduated from SUNY Sullivan;
• Be admitted to SUNY institution as a transfer student (proof of acceptance required);
• Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA) that exceeds funds available from other sources;
• Maintain a 3.0 GPA, and;
• Provide at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member or advisor.
