Ghani Movie Review and Rating
Movie Review: Ghani Director : Kiran Korrapati Producer : Sidhu Mudda, Allu Bobby Production Company: Renaissance Pictures, Allu Bobby Company Music Director : Thaman Starring : Varun Tej, Jagapathi Babu, Saiee Manjrekar, Upendra, Suniel Shetty and others Rating: 3 /5 Date: 8th April 2022
Ghani Movie Review: Varun Tej, Jagapathi Babu, Saiee Manjrekar and Upendra starrer sport based movie Ghani has hit the theaters today on 8th April 2022. Let’s see the story of Ghani.
Story: Ghani (Varun Tej) wants to win a medal for boxing at the nationals. He is the son of 2004 Andhra Pradesh state boxing champion, Vikramaditya (Upendra). He becomes the district boxing champion against his mother’ (Nadiya) will. She doesn’t want him to be associated with anything that disgraced his father, who was also a boxer. When Ghani comes to know about the past and the injustice happened to his father through Vijendra Sinha (Suniel Shetty), an opponent to his father once, he decided to take Ghani revenge. What happens next, form rest of the story.
Plus Points:
- Performance
- Production Values
Minus Points:
- Predictable story
Performance: Varun Tej has given his energetic performance as a boxer in Ghani. He is good in a few emotional scenes. His six-pack body look and chiseled body is highlighted. Saiee Manjrekar in the role of girl friend is ok. She looks beautiful on screen. Once again Jagapathi Babu steals the show with his performance. Upendra is good in the supporting role. He gets a major and important role as Varun Tej’ father. Sunil Shetty plays the coach of Varun Tej and does well. His acting skills are commendable. Naresh as a boxing coach is fine. Naveen Chandra as the boxing competitor to Varun, excelled in his role. Rest of the cast of Ghani justify their roles.
Technical: The story of Ghani is predictable. The Cinematography by George C Willaims has a realistic texture to it and the boxing scenes are shot well. Background music makes an impact. Dialogues are an asset. Editing is fine and the Production values are good. Coming on the work of director Kiran Korrapati, he did a decent job with this film based on boxing.
Analysis: The first half is decent. The interval twist is good. It splits time between Ghani’s home life and Maya’s (Saiee Manjrekar) infatuation with him. Varun Tej puts his sweat and blood for this film, the viewers can clearly observe it in the 2nd half .The movie banks heavily on everything from mother sentiment to the love story.

Ghani Review
What's Behind
Mega Prince Varun Tej is getting ready to flex his muscles as a boxer at the box office turning Ghani. The film directed by Kiran Korrapati is releasing on April 8,2022. Saiee Manjrekar is the female lead in the film and let us see what impact Varun Tej made on movie lovers as Ghani.
Story Review
Ghani (Ghani) promises his mother Madhuri (Nadhiya) that he will not pursue his boxing career. However, he secretly pursues his dream to win the boxing championship at the national level. In the midst of all this, beautiful girl Maya (Saiee Manjrekar) tries to win over his love. To find out why Ghani promised his mother and why he dreams of pursuing his dream of winning the boxing championship and where it will lead to, what is the connection with his father Vikramaditya (Upendra), Vijender Sinha (Suneil Shetty), Boxing federation chief Easwarnath (Jagapathi Babu) and Aadi (Naveen Chandra), enjoy Ghani on the silver screen.
Artists, Technicians Review
Kiran Korrapati, a debutante tried to show Varun Tej in a completely different role. Varun Tej believed in him completely and worked hard and did full justice to his role. However, Kiran Korrapati came with a routine story bereft of any thrills. Right from the start to the finish, the film sails on a predictable note. Narration got nothing to rave about and the first half progresses at a snail's pace with the romantic track dragging the film to no extent. The interval block is predictable and the story picks up pace in the second half. Though developments happen at a fast pace, however routine elements irritate the viewers. The lack of real twists and turns and the predictable screenplay and direction failed to make an impact. Finally, after the boxing bouts, the film ends in a normal manner. Dialogues turned out to be just average and Kiran Korrapati failed as his inexperience turned out to be his disadvantage. The entire story lacked emotions and the narration failed to connect chords with the movie lovers.
Mega Prince Varun Tej is known for doing different genre entertainers. For the first time, he played the role of a boxer. He nailed it to perfection. He underwent a remarkable transformation, put on a lot of effort, and trained rigorously to slip into the role of the boxer effortlessly. He not only looked realistic and natural as the boxer in the ring and performed well as a caring son who loves his mother and also as a youngster who cares for his girlfriend. He showed the right kind of expressions and emotions and attracted with his screen presence.
Saiee Manjrekar who made her debut with this film looked cute and beautiful. She played the role of a bubbly girl and impressed with her expressions. However, she got limited screen presence and completely went missing in the second half. Nadiya in the role of the mother played the role of tailormade for her. She emoted well as a caring mother who feared for her son's future. Upendra performed well as the boxer and the father and Suneil Shetty played the role of a boxer quite well. However, Suneil Shetty seems to have lost all the glow in his face. Naveen Chandra is ok in his role and Jagapathi Babu got a routine role. Naresh, Tanikella Bharani, and others performed accordingly. Tamannaah's special number failed to sizzle and sparkle despite her best efforts.
The music of Thaman is nothing to rave about. Only the title song Ghani made an impact. He elevated the scenes with his background music. George C Williams' cinematography is good. Editing of Marthand K Venkatesh could have been far better. Production values are good.
Disadvantages
Lack of twists and turns
Missing emotions
The routine story, screenplay and direction
Rating Analysis
Varun Tej's Ghani directed by Kiran Korrapati generated interest with the trailer and teaser. People got excited with Varun Tej playing the role of a boxer for the first time. But in the story, Kiran Korrapati, for all the hard work of Varun Tej and his belief, failed to live up to the expectations. He failed to make use of the opportunity to come up with an interesting and power-packed story to elevate Varun Tej's stardom to another level. Right from the story to the screenplay and direction, everything turned out to be routine lacking real emotions and twists. He failed to make use of the talented star cast and his inexperience turned Ghani into a below-average affair. Considering all these aspects, CJ goes with a 2.25 rating for Ghani.

Ghani Movie Review: Varun Tej Shows Off His Power In The Ring
It is all known that Tollywood's ace actor Varun Tej pinned all his hopes on his latest movie Ghani and also turned into a boxer for this sports drama. To best fit the bill, he underwent intense training under Tony Jeffries, the former England boxer who won a bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Going with the plot, it deals with both family and sports genres as the lead actor wants to prove his worth in the boxing ring hiding it from his mother.
The first half showcases how Ghani turns into a boxer hiding it from his mother (Nadiya). In the first 15 minutes itself, we come to know that Ghani wants to win the medal in the nationals and struggles hard for it. He gets trained under Naresh in Vizag and keeps it as a secret as he promised his mother to be away from this sport as his father is proved cheated in the same game. So, his mother wants him to be away from the game for the same reason. He is also seen facing troubles with another boxer Aadi (Naveen Chandra) who is a rich brat. But he also wants to prove his individual identity and faces off with Ghani. Well, they also have a face-off out of the ring in a biker boyz style.
Even his infatuation with the lead actress Saiee Manjrekar adds some romance to the movie. Well, just before the interval, the makers disclose who is Ghani's father and then the twist is revealed. So, the actual drama begins from there…
The flashback begins in the second half and showcases how Ghani's father is proved wrong in the ring! He will be tagged as a cheater! So, in the end, along with two main boxing matches, which make us sit at the edge of the seat, even the emotional family drama also makes the movie worth watching!
So, one needs to watch the movie to know how Ghani proves his talent to his mother and meets his father. Will he win a National medal or not?
Varun Tej as Ghani looked impressive and his amazing body transformation made him best fit the bill. His emotional connection with his parents made the movie worth watching. Lead actress Saiee has a limited screen space and she looked gorgeous and impressed all and sundry. Coming to Nadiya, she once again made us go aww with her amazing acting skills and showcased her best as a mother who wants her son to be away from her husband's impression! Bollywood's ace actor Suniel Shetty as a coach looked good while Jagapathi Babu as antagonist had a decent part in the movie. Naveen Chandra and Upendra also bagged decent roles!
Conclusion:
Ghani is a decent boxing drama that can be watched once on the big screens despite having a routine story!

Ghani Review: Lack Of Punch
Movie: Ghani Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: Renaissance Pictures Cast: Varun Tej, Saiee Manjrekar, Jagapathi Babu, Upendra, Sunil Shetty, Naveen Chandra and others Music: S Thaman Director of Photography: George C Williams Editor: Marthand K Venkatesh Producers: Siddhu Mudda - Allu Bobby Direction: Kiran Korrapati Release Date: April 8, 2022
Varun Tej has worked on “Ghani” for nearly three years, and the film marked the first production of Allu Arjun’s elder brother Allu Bobby. The film hit the theatres today after getting postponed many times.
Let’s find out its merits and demerits.
Story: A boxing champion Vikramaditya (Upendra) was disgraced for his alleged misconduct in the game before his death in the ring. Vikramaditya’s wife Madhuri (Nadiya) takes her son to Vizag to start life afresh. Her son Ghani promises that he would never follow in his father’s footsteps or take up boxing games. But fifteen years later, the grown-up Ghani (Varun Tej) begins a mission to win the national boxing championship and gets trained secretly.
The rest of the story is about how Ghani becomes a boxing champion and takes revenge on those who wronged his father.
Artistes’ Performances: It is evident that Varun Tej has put in a lot of effort to portray the role of a boxer. By going for a complete makeover and achieving the physique required for a champion, he gets the right physical appearance and fits well into the character. His sincerity is appreciable.
Upendra has the required gravitas for the movie but the role is short. Nadiya as Varun’s mother is just okay. Jagapathi Babu’s role is clichéd. Bollywood actress Saiee Manjrekar doesn’t have much to do in her Telugu debut. Naresh as a boxing coach looks comical.
Technical Excellence: The film boasts rich frames with George C Williams’ sharp camera work. Thaman’s music doesn’t help much. Editing lacks sharpness. A lot of money seems to have been spent by the producers to get a grand look.
Highlights: Varun Tej’s sincerity Star Cast
Drawback: Dull first halfWeak love track Lack of surprise or big twist Formulaic screenplay writing
Analysis The basic storyline of Varun Tej’s “Ghani”, despite its lack of novelty, is fairly worth exploring. Generally, in all sports dramas, the protagonist’s goal is winning a championship. But the motive of the protagonist in this film is different. Excelling in the game is not his driving force, but an act of personal revenge is. A pretty straight line of the story.
Such a flimsy thread needs a far gripping screenplay. New director Kiran Korrapati doesn’t get it right in the writing department. The first half of the film is devoted to Ghani’s secret boxing training, the bonding between mother and son, and the hero’s love track. The banal proceedings in the entire first half test our patience.
Except for withholding the backstory of the hero’s father, the narrative runs on expected lines till the end. There is no surprise element at all. This is the drawback of the film despite the hero having a clear-cut goal and reason for revenge.
Though the second half of the film is fairly better than the first half, it lacks a tight hold on the narrative. Plus, the film suddenly shifts gear in the third act and tries to go in Thalapathy Vijay’s “Bigil” format. The betting mafia, the corporatization of boxing games, the Indian Boxing League, etc, come in place in the final act, further bringing predictability.
Furthermore, the mother-son sentiment drama is not effective either. Nadiya’s character turns silent for the most part in the second half and appears at the last moment. It is out of place for the story.
Sports dramas require inspiring moments when the protagonist plays the match, but here all we see is only a repeat of punches that don’t give an emotional high. The writing team and director seem to have failed to put in the effort as much as Varun Tej has to achieve physicality.
In a nutshell, “Ghani” lacks the required punch for a sports drama. The efforts are visible, but the play doesn’t hold our interest at all.
Bottom line: Revenge Drama

Varun Tej’s Gaddalakonda Ganesh was released in 2019 and he had to wait two years for his next release Ghani. While his previous outing was as a gangster, Varun Tej chose to be a boxer this time. The trailer of Ghani boasts about a boxing champion aspirant for many reasons and the story around him. Ghani is directed by Kiran Korrapati and is produced by Allu Bobby along with Siddhu Mudda. Having a popular star cast like Suniel Shetty, Upendra, and Saiee Manjrekar, Ghani is released today in theaters. Let us look at the review.
What Is It About?
Ghani (Varun Tej) is a boxing aspirant, whose father Vikramaditya (Upendra) was a famous boxer who was accused of doping. Ghani hates him and wants to prove himself as a boxing champion. Against his promise to his mother Madhuri (Nadhiya) Ghani gets into boxing and learns many truths from Vijender Sinha (Suneil Shetty) and also about Eshwar Nath (Jagapathi Babu). What really happened? Will Ghani really become a champion?
Performances
Varun Tej is improving his acting skills with each movie and with different choices of films. He is good as a boxing aspirant and it appears he worked real hard to shape his body. Varun Tej’s efforts apart, his role needed to have much more depth in boxing and its terms.
Upendra did fine in his brief appearance as a boxer. Though most of his presence runs with the dirty politics in sports and other issues, he did his part all over. Suniel Shetty is alright and he mostly carries a single expression throughout. The boxing scene between Suneil Shetty and Upendra is not intense and it hardly impresses.
Saiee Manjrekar is in the film just that the hero needs to have a love interest. She does not get to utter a dialogue in the second half. Nadhiya gets a lengthy role as Varun’s mother and she did fine. This kind of role is not new to her.
Jagapathi Babu did okay in the role and it is not about his performance, but his choice. The talented actor has appeared in a similar role in the recent past for Naga Shaurya’s Lakshya and for Good Luck Sakhi. His appearance in Ghani is monotonous.
Naveen Chandra, Naresh, and others did alright in their respective roles.
Technicalities
Ghani is not just any new story, neither it is an intense sports drama. The cinematography is good and so is the screenplay.
The songs come and go. The title song Ghani is good. Tamanna’s special number is not needed at all. It just cuts the pace at the pre-climax.
The background music by Thaman is good and the scenes could have been better if they match up to the intensity in the BGM. The dialogues are pretty ordinary.
Thumbs Down
Routine Story and Narration Lack of Intensity Predictable Scenes Hero – Heroine Love Track
We get some ideas about what the story could be when we watch the trailer of a movie. Ghani is one such movie that we can exactly figure out what’s going on by just watching the trailer. The reason is we have watched a good number of similar plots and Ghani does not disappoint our predictions.
An aspiring boxer hates his father for the latter’s faulty past but later gets to know what actually happened and starts to admire him. He takes on the leash, does what is needed, and wins against the bad. This is the story of Ghani and many other such movies, in a nutshell.
First things first, Ghani is supposed to be an intense sports drama with family sentiments and politics around. But here, the intensity and the depth in boxing are missing. There won’t be any details about his training, nor the coaches’ tips and tactics for the matches. The movie is primarily based on boxing but it hardly focuses on the techniques in the ring and the matches fail to impress.
The forced love story of Ghani and the heroine is boring and could have been avoided. Skipping the scenes of their love story and the song for it could have saved many minutes in the story leaving it at least with a neat run time.
The reason for Varun Tej hating his father is sensible, but why his mother let the hatred grow in him is not known. Though she made him promise to stay away from boxing, she could have revealed some facts instead.
Coming to the second half, the song where Suneil Shetty trains Varun Tej is good. Varun built his body well apt for a boxing aspirant and he shows of his six pack in a glimpse. The boxing matches there after could have been more gripping and enthralling, which are not. Most of them appear rushed. Coming to the politics by the baddie Jagapathi Babu, the betting drama he does could have been deeper, and that also appears like a plot-sake touch. The movie goes predictable all along and that includes the villain’s cunning ploy each and every time.
Even the climax match which should be fierce and powerful appears weak and obvious. From Thammudu to Jersey, we have seen umpteen sports dramas in Telugu that are interlaced with emotional background stories. The ones that were able to make a connection with the audience with the proper shots in the particular sport turnout successful. Ghani is not one of them.
Overall, Ghani is just another sports-based family drama in an old template. With RRR running successfully and KGF 2 coming by this time next week, we have to see if Ghani survives a knockout punch by those two players.
Bottom line: Old Punch In A New Glove
Rating: 2.25/5

Ghani movie review: Varun Tej's boxing drama knocks you out, and puts you to sleep
Ghani is extremely unremarkable, marred by cliches, lazy writing, and bad dialogues.
Language: Telugu Let’s talk about the flashback that finds its way into the screenplay three times within the first 60 minutes of the film. A kid gets bullied by his schoolmates because of his father’s deeds. A minute passes, and we see his worried mother, Madhuri, played by the reliable Nadia, walking swiftly towards a crowd and pulling it apart. She finds her kid half-naked and crouching down while everyone around—not just the kids anymore, but young people to adults—points at him and chants ‘cheater, cheater.’ I cannot reveal more about the story, but I cannot fathom a world where you subject an innocent kid to something like this. It isn’t just over-the-top. It is cruelty without motivation or reason.
Let’s look at the setting for a minute. Boxing is as primitive a sport can get—the blood-spilling, the grunting, and the pain. So, it makes a certain sense to set a movie like this near the sea. For one, it is poetic—one forceful thing witnessing another, and it also helps with creating visually-stunning montages. Pa. Ranjit’s Sarpatta Parambarai already showed how to perfectly encapsulate the shore and its tricky terrain to enable a man’s physical transformation and skill-building. So, yes. When the film shifts to Vizag, I expected there to be a meaningful reason. But no. Other than the cursory aerial shot and a few scenes in Gitam , the film has no interest in the city.
This lack of followthrough is apparent in every section of the film. Kiran Korrapati probably had a decent idea, but it is nowhere to be seen. The film is so under-written that the protagonist’s age keeps shifting. He is studying his 4th year of engineering—no one in the college looks a day below 30, but 15 years ago, he was a 10-year-old boy—’ Paathikela kurraadu ’, says a character. Is he a bad student? How long has he been doing his engineering? Now to the mother. We are never explained how she managed more than stay afloat. A two-storied building that looks like a furniture store outlet can be afforded by someone who runs a nursery?
Let’s leave the finer details for now and talk about the characters. Ghani and his mother talk a lot about pain, but we don’t see them suffer. They reveal their despair in dialogues and stories they tell to other characters. Varun Tej’s poker face doesn’t help either. We can see the actor’s hard work in his physical transformation, but what about the Ghani? Why would the audience care if a character isn’t ready to be vulnerable in front of the camera? Frankly, what reason would they have to?
Technically, too, the film is a letdown. Thaman gives an average score, and the BGM is ineffective as well. Even if George C. Williams’s camera and Marthand K. Venkatesh have a few tricks up their sleeves—the scene close to the interval where the mother comes is nicely edited and shot, most of the film is visually inert. Even if the boxing matches are well-produced and designed, Raveendar is the production designer, the games aren’t exciting to watch. There is no shoptalk, no technical terminology—’ Kodthe ’ song with Tamannaah seems to be the only strategy. Is innings an accurate word to use in the context of boxing? The champion played by Suniel Shetty thinks so.
Speaking of which, the filmmaker’s most significant achievement is bagging in many great artists with a story like this.
Upendra is fantastic as the gold-hearted boxer. The film also cleverly misdirects the viewer when it comes to him. It doesn’t make any narrative difference, but it gives the viewer an excuse to return after the intermission. Saiee Manjrekar’s rocky performance gets slightly better with time, but the writing never supports her. Jagapathi Babu has played the same character for so long that he doesn’t have to do anything anymore. He stands, and the viewer automatically predicts his next step. Consistency is a good thing, I guess.
Kiran Korrapati’s Ghani is true to its name. It is a mine, but there isn’t anything useful buried inside. The further the viewer digs, the clearer it becomes that the intended treasure is just a hollow grave, where cliches, lazy writing, and bad dialogues go to die. Any moment spent is a moment that we will not get back. Sure. But when you spend your time doing something enjoyable, those moments come back as memories. Keeping that in mind, I can comfortably say that the time I’ve spent watching Ghani is time I am never getting back; it is that unremarkable. Even a terrible film will have something to teach, but a movie that never tries anything is a waste of everything.
Ghani is currently playing in theatres

Ghani Review : A Predictable Sports Drama
Ghani Movie Review
Telugu360 Rating : 2.5/5
Vikramaditya wins 2004 Andhra Pradesh State Boxing Championship. In national championships, the organizers suspend him from the game due to allegations of steroid use against him. Vikramaditya’s son Ghani wants to become a Boxer to prove a point to the society. Ghani’s mother wants Ghani not to involve in Boxing but he practices without her knowledge and becomes district champion. VIjendra Sinha ( Suneil Shetty) whose once opponent to Ghani’s father reveal the real incidents from the past. Rest of the story is how Ghani and Vijendra Sinha take revenge on the betting syndicate kingpin.
Ghani tries to be different from a typical sports template films by adding family drama into it. This film also tries to be contemporary by covering betting menace in Indian sports. Ghani has love, revenge; message oriented all in one and could do only partial justice to each thread. Movies starts off with 2004 flashback episodes covering Vikramaditya (Ghani’s father)‘s brief flashback. Ghani’s rise as boxing champion, his brief love thread with Maya ( Saiee Manjrekar ) and a twist at interval makes the first half. There is not any engaging factor in a lackluster first half. The script gets better in second half as Suneil Shetty, Jagapati babu and Upendra enter the proceedings. The high profile Indian Box Office league by Eeshwarnath ( Jagapati Babu) and betting operations, revenge episodes , the way few twists are revealed make up for a much better second half . The writer director Kiran Korrapati has come up with a decent enough story to become a hit movie, but the final output is not beyond average. Hanuman Ravuri has provided story support and dialogues help . Good dialogues like “ Abaddhaniki Telusu, adhi eppudaina vodipotundhi ani “ are there in the film. Heroine role is forgettable one and very small role. The production values are very good for Ghani film. Debutant production house Renaissance Pictures and Allu Bobby Company has spent adequately to bring niche look to the film. For each character, they hired reputed actors. However, there is also miscasting like Naresh as boxing coach. S.S. Thaman’s music isn’t helpful much to the film
Positives :
- Varuntej role as boxer
- Prodcution Values are good
- Second half is relatively better
Negatives :
- First half of the film is a filler
- Emotions could have been better
- Very predictable scenes
Verdict: ‘Ghani’ is an average film at best. The second half of the film has been relatively better written and engaging, but the first half was shallow. This sports drama deals with IBL betting syndicate, A Victim family’s struggle, the injustice to sports etc. Overall, Ghani film has some good elements but may not be enough to pull off.

'The Fall Guy' review: Ryan Gosling brings his A game as a lovestruck stuntman
In “Barbie,” Ryan Gosling ’s job is Beach. In “ The Fall Guy, ” it’s Stunt and he’s pretty great at his gig.
Gosling nicely follows up his Oscar-nominated Ken turn as an embattled Everyman who falls 12 stories, gets thrown through glass and pulls off an epic car jump, among other death-defying moments in the breezily delightful “Fall Guy” (★★★ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters Friday).
Director David Leitch, former stunt double for a fella named Brad Pitt, revamps the 1980s Lee Majors TV show as an action-comedy ode to the stunt performers who never get their due, while Gosling and Emily Blunt dazzle as likable exes who reconnect amid gonzo circumstances.
"I'm not the hero of this story. I'm just the stunt guy," says Colt Seavers (Gosling) in voiceover as we first meet him. Colt is considered Hollywood's best stuntman, doubling for egotistical A-lister Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and fostering a flirty relationship with camera operator Jody Moreno (Blunt). However, a stunt goes accidentally awry in his latest movie, breaking his back as well as disrupting his love life, mental health and entire status quo.
'The Fall Guy': Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt talk 'epic' 'I'm Just Ken' Oscars performance
A year later, down on his luck and confidence still shaken, Colt is parking cars as a valet at a burrito joint when he gets a call from producer Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham). Jody, now an on-the-rise director, needs him in Sydney to work on her first huge sci-fi epic “Metalstorm.” He gets there and after a gnarly cannon roll in a stunt car where he takes out a camera, Colt learns that not only did Jody not ask for him, she doesn’t want him around at all.
Still, the old spark's there and it turns out she does really need him: Tom has befriended some shady dudes and gone missing, and Gail tasks Colt to both keep Tom's disappearance a secret and also find the dude. Alongside stunt coordinator and pal Dan Tucker (Winston Duke), Colt uncovers a criminal conspiracy and in the process goes undercover as Tom in a nightclub (wearing some Ken-esque shades and cool coat), gets so high he sees unicorns and teams up with a dog that only takes commands in French.
Colt is put through the physical ringer during his twisty hero's journey, and it’s impossible not to love him through every punch, kick, stab and dangerous feat because of Gosling’s offbeat charisma. Before “Barbie,” he showed his considerable comedic talents in “The Nice Guys” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” yet marries them well here with a healthy amount of vulnerable masculinity and sublime nuance. With him, a thumbs-up – the stuntman’s go-to signal that everything’s OK – is also a way for Colt to try and hide his sensitivities.
Like Leitch’s other movies, from “Bullet Train” to “Atomic Blonde,” “Fall Guy” is filled with fights, explosions and assorted derring-do for Colt to (barely) live through. One mayhem-filled car chase scene has Gosling’s character tussling with a goon on an out-of-control trailer interspersed with Blunt singing Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds.” (It's essentially a two-hour argument for a stunt Oscar category.) The movie sports a definite musical heart, with an amusing scene between Jody and a weepy Colt set to the Taylor Swift lovelorn jam “All Too Well,” and is also interestingly timely considering a plot point about deep fake technology.
The one downside with this sort of stunt spectacular is Colt’s mission to find the narcissistic Tom and getting into hazardous shenanigans takes away from his romantic stuff with Blunt. Playful and quick with the zingers, their characters awkwardly rekindle their romance – in one sequence, she spills all sorts of tea about their past relationship in front of their crew – and you miss them when they're not together.
For ’80s kids, Majors was the “Fall Guy” – and Leitch’s movie pays tribute in multiple ways to the show and its scrappy spirit – but Gosling makes for a fabulous heir apparent. He’s not just Ken. He’s also Colt, and Gosling’s not done showing us the true extent of his talents.
‘John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA’ Is a Winningly Shambolic Pop-Up Talk Show: TV Review

Much of Los Angeles lore fits with longtime Mulaney motifs like true crime. (On ‘80s serial killers like the Night Stalker: “They had cool names and cool branding, but that doesn’t mean what they did was right.”) “Everybody’s in LA” itself is in line with the performer’s embrace of somewhat unfashionable, or just off-kilter, formats. Mulaney’s last project before the pandemic was “The Sack Lunch Bunch,” a children’s sketch special that marked a delightfully unexpected left turn after a string of well-received stand-up hours. His high-profile divorce and experience with substance abuse necessitated a semi-confessional turn with last year’s “Baby J,” but with “Everybody’s in LA,” Mulaney is back on more comfortable ground: a throwback vehicle for exploring highly personal hobby horses, casting himself as a self-effacing but still smoothly composed master of ceremonies. After earning rave reviews for his appearance at the Governors Awards, there was widespread speculation Mulaney might take on the Oscars. “Everybody’s in LA” continues to prove the comic is qualified for a bigger, perhaps longer-lasting job — and also that a smaller stage is a better venue for his quirks.
With its wood paneling, warm earth tones, and ample houseplants, the studio for “Everybody’s in LA” is a ‘70s-inspired nod to the likes of Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett. Character actor Richard Kind, himself a visiting dignitary from New York, assumes the traditional role of sidekick, objecting that the dystopian delivery robot Mulaney has brought onstage is stealing the jobs of hardworking candy couriers like his own father. At a time when classical talk is increasingly endangered — rest in power, “The Late Late Show”; long live “After Midnight” — it’s equally endearing and disoriented to see the medium’s past resurrected as a novelty. Yet segments spotlighting real-life eccentrics like a Hollywood billboard worker or a man fishing in Echo Park Lake felt distinctly contemporary, channeling the curious, humanist style of “How to With John Wilson.”
The first episode of “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA” is now streaming on Netflix, with remaining episodes airing live May 6-10 at 7pm PT.

‘The Idea of You’ Review: Surviving Celebrity
Anne Hathaway headlines a movie that’s got a lot to say about the perils of fame.
- Share full article
By Alissa Wilkinson
Women of a certain age (that is, my age) feel like they grew up alongside Anne Hathaway, because, well, we did. We were awkward teens together when she made “The Princess Diaries” in 2001. We felt ourselves to be put-upon entry-level hirelings right when “The Devil Wears Prada” came out in 2006. We understood her broken-down narcissistic addict in “Rachel Getting Married,” because who couldn’t? And we watched the Hathaway backlash, pegged to public perception that she was trying too hard, and worried that people saw us the same way.
Now we’re 40-ish. We know for sure that Gen Z considers millennials to be cringe, and, thankfully, we no longer feel the need to care. The greatest gift of reaching middle age is having settled into yourself, and that is apparently what Hathaway, age 41, has done . She has been through the celebrity wringer (and more ) and come out the other side looking radiant, with a long list of credits in movies that swing from standard commercial fare to auteurist masterpieces.
This is perhaps why it’s so satisfying to see her name come first — alone, before the title credit — in “The Idea of You,” which is on its surface a relatively fluffy little film. Based on the sleeper hit novel by Robinne Lee, “The Idea of You” is plainly fantasy, in the fan fiction mold, that poses the question: What if Harry Styles, the British megastar and former frontman of One Direction, fell madly in love with a hot 40-year-old mom? In this universe, the Styles character is Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the British frontman of a five-member boy band called August Moon.
Hathaway plays Solène Marchand, an art gallery owner whose arrogantly useless ex-husband, Daniel (Reid Scott), buys v.i.p. meet-and-greet tickets for their 16-year-old daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), and her two best friends, all of whom were huge August Moon fans … in the seventh grade.
The event is at Coachella, and Daniel is set to take the teenagers but backs out at the last second, citing a work emergency. Solène reluctantly agrees to take them, and while at the festival, mistakes Hayes’s trailer for the bathroom. They meet, it’s cute, and you can guess what happens next.
Or can you? It was clear about 10 minutes into the movie that what was required for enjoyment was to surrender to the daydreaming, and so, with very little internal protest, I did. How could I resist? Solène is smart, competent, kind and secure; she has great hair and a great wardrobe; and most important, she seems like a real person, even if the situation in which she finds herself greatly stretches the bonds of credibility.
More than once, I was struck by how authentically 40 Solène seemed to me — a woman capable of making her own decisions, even ones she thinks might be ill-advised — and how weirdly rare it is to see that kind of character in a movie. She has a kid, and friends, and a career. She reads books and looks at art, and she is flattered by this 24-year-old superstar’s attention but takes a long time to come around to the idea that it may not be a joke.
Solène also feels real shame and real resolve in the course of the winding fairy tale story, which predictably has to go south. But most of all, she’s in a movie that doesn’t try to shame her, or patronize her, or make her appear ridiculous for having desires and fantasies of her own. She’s just who she is, and it’s simple to understand her appeal to someone whose life has never been his own.
Directed by Michael Showalter, who wrote the adapted screenplay with Jennifer Westfeldt, “The Idea of You” succeeds mostly because of Hathaway’s performance, though she and Galitzine spark and banter pleasurably (and he can dance and sing, too). It tweaks the novel in a number of ways — Hayes is older than the book’s character, for one thing — and also seems to implicitly know it’s a movie, and that movies have a strange relationship with age-gap romances.
In fact, that’s one of its strengths. Several times, characters remark on the double standard attached to people’s judgment of Solène and Hayes’s relationship, hypothesizing that in a gender-swapped situation, people would be high-fiving the older man who landed the hot younger star. Sixteen years looks like a lot on paper, but in the movies, at least, it is barely a blip.
That musing is interesting enough, if a familiar one. More fascinating in “The Idea of You” is its treatment of the cage of celebrity. Hayes seems mature compared with his bandmates and the girls who follow them around, but he’s also clearly stuck in some kind of arrested development. And I do mean stuck: He is self-aware enough to tell Solène, plaintively, that he auditioned for the band when he was 14 and not much has changed beyond his level of fame. He wants a life beyond the spotlight, badly.
And that’s just what he can’t get. Neither can Solène, nor, eventually, anyone around her. The idea of living a quiet life might obviously be out of reach, but the added elements of tabloid news and rabid fans unafraid to treat Hayes as if they know him make things far worse. The film starts to feel a little like the tale of a monster, but the monster is parasociality, encouraged by the illusion of intimacy that the modern superstar machine relies on to keep selling tickets and merch and albums and whatever else keeps the star in the spotlight.
It’s probably coincidental that “The Idea of You” comes on the heels of Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” on which she strongly implies that her carefully cultivated fandom has made her love life a nightmare. But spiritually, at least, they’re of a piece — even if the origins of the film’s plot seem as much borne of parasociality as a critique of it. And that makes Hathaway’s performance extra poignant. She’s been dragged into that buzz saw before. And somehow, she’s figured out how to make a life on the other side of it.
The Idea of You Rated R for getting hot and heavy, plus some language. Running time: 1 hour 55 minutes. Watch on Prime Video .

The Fall Guy review – Ryan Gosling fails to fly in vacuous stuntman action comedy
The combined star power of Gosling and Emily Blunt can’t lift Bullet Train director David Leitch’s action-heavy spectacle into meaningful entertainment
L ike the Lee Majors-starring 80s TV show on which this bombastic action comedy is based, The Fall Guy is pitched as a celebration of the work of the stunt crew: the unheralded men and women who take the movie-set risks so that the stars can take the credit. But in fact the film tumbles into the same pitfalls as any other enthusiastically pyrotechnic, action-heavy extravaganza: the sheer volume of stunt sequences means that the skills on show start to lose all meaning. Individually, the shots of a tiny figure dangling from a bucking, spinning, malfunctioning helicopter are impressive. But the relentless pace at which director (and former stuntman) David Leitch ( Bullet Train ) works through his ostentatious action set piece checklist means that it all turns into empty noise; spectacles strung together by a dizzy, slapdash screenplay that feels as though it has sustained a few too many bumps to the head.
Ryan Gosling is curiously half-baked as Colt Seavers, a top stunt professional whose career and burgeoning romantic relationship are both derailed by a broken back from a botched fall. Now Jody ( Emily Blunt ), the ex-girlfriend he ghosted after the incident, is directing her first movie (an absolutely shocking-looking sci-fi western titled Metal Storm). And Colt is tempted out of retirement at her express request. Except she didn’t ask for him and she wants nothing more to do with him. Meanwhile, the film’s star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), is missing and the fate of Jody’s debut hangs in the balance. It’s up to Colt to do his best work – he’s repeatedly kicked in the face, ignited and shot at – in the name of bad art. Which, I suppose, neatly sums up the stunt performer paradox.
