Creativity and Wellbeing in Music Education — philosophy, policy and practice in the context of contemporary Scottish primary education
Kim, Hanah (2020) Creativity and Wellbeing in Music Education — philosophy, policy and practice in the context of contemporary Scottish primary education. PhD thesis, University of Glasgow.
This is an interdisciplinary study encompassing elements of music, education, and aspects of philosophy and psychology. The principal aim of this research is to investigate ways of fostering musical creativity and wellbeing in primary schools, as well as providing curriculum guidelines and drawing out practical implications for Music Education in the present era.
Contemporary society represents a new wave of development in human affairs. Resting upon rapid technological innovation, it has created greater opportunities for revealing and experiencing creativity in forms that can then underpin enhanced states of human welfare. At the same time, these far-reaching changes have in many places become threats to human wellbeing, resulting from the dislocating social and emotional impact of new styles of living. As a consequence, ‘creativity’ and ‘wellbeing’ have arisen as important themes in the current era, chiefly as assets and attitudes required for human beings: to live, to respond, to cope, to prosper, and to succeed. In this turbulent context, education is tasked with nurturing both ‘creativity’ and ‘wellbeing’. These concepts are especially meaningful to be investigated through Music Education at the present time, since human beings have had an enduring relationship with sound and music in almost all cultures on record, even and especially those moving through great change.
From its basis in musical theory and Music Education, this research also develops a distinctive theoretical foundation in the concepts of ‘Romantic Aesthetics’ and ‘Romantic Irony’––which is a literary, aesthetic, and stylistic term that involves an advanced psychological concept of ‘self’ (e.g. Garber, 2014; Allen, 2007) very apposite to the current age. Specifically, for the present research, I wanted to apply these concepts and theories to the practices of contemporary Music Education, to help devise a useful curriculum for music classes in primary schools consistent with my wider interests in children’s creativity, and children’s wellbeing and resilience, when their lives are often under great pressure. The teaching methods and activities are researched, devised, implemented and evaluated encompassing what is recognised today as the four major components of Music Education: listening to music, singing, playing instruments, and composing.
The hypothesis within this research is that applying insights and approaches derived from ‘Romantic Irony’ to Music Education in modern primary schools can also be empowering in fostering pupils’ creativity and wellbeing. Across a broad cross-section of literature in different research areas––not only education but also philosophy and aesthetics, psychology, sociology––it is possible to set the premise that creativity and Romantic Irony are related in various vital aspects. Moreover, it is also possible, this thesis shows, to fashion and actualise a practice of Music Education in regular primary classrooms responsive not only to the rising emphasis on the concept of creativity but also to the pursuit of emotional resilience as a vital and life-supporting dimension of that creativity. Thus, this thesis will attempt to show that applying Romantic Aesthetics and Romantic Irony to Music Education for the development of pupil creativity and wellbeing may a constructive innovation within the compass of all teachers committed to the place of music in the primary curriculum.
With due reference to the educational environment and surroundings of Scotland, where this project was deliberately targeted and unfolded, the research herein consists of two types of interventions: a conceptual and an empirical strand. The first part of the research is allocated to investigating and critically assessing theories of creativity, emotion, Romantic Aesthetics, Romantic Irony, Health and Wellbeing, and music therapy––alongside the educational practices in that these concepts may be meaningfully applied or manifest. For the empirical part of the research, I adopted a ‘Vignette’ and ‘thematic approach’ partially indebted to both practioner enquiry and Action Research, to craft ways of enhancing creativity and wellbeing through Music Education in a number of classrooms where I had been previously welcome and active as a serving teacher. The classroom interventions were divided into 3 Vignettes to stimulate pupils’ innate musical creativity and to form relationships, to deliever basic theoretical knowledge, and then to provide opportunities to apply skills in relation to certain topics that appear in daily lives. Thereafter, important academic conversations with experts were conducted in order to examine deeper views of the researcher’s philosophy and approaches and to search for the directions that Music Education ought to follow in contemporary society.
The thesis concludes with the conviction that Music Education preserves a rich potential for realising and expressing the core values of progressive education today: promoting for the children in our schools the experiences of creativity, health, resilience and wellbeing which matter so much for surviving and attaining the good life in our protean 21st century society.

The Architecture of Music - Design by Analogy
Marko Petreski
Music has the potential to evoke some of our deepest emotions and drastically alter our moods simply through specific combinations of notes. Architecture too, should have this potential. This thesis aims at investigating the secret of emotion in music, as it is an attempt to draw an analogy that may help to create a deeper architectural experience. A great musical composition is like a dream. When it is convincing in its narrative it draws you in, and makes you believe in its reality, stirring emotions within you for no apparent reason. When you look deeper into the nature of a musical composition, like musicologists have been doing, you discover testable, psychological devices are applied in order to create a greater emotional response from the listeners. By studying the work of Beethoven, I believe that I can translate these aural devices into visual and tactile ones, in the form of a housing development in Auckland city. Housing developments suffer from problems of monotony, due to their repetitive and modular nature. This project seeks to provide an alternative to these monotonous schemes by using a piece of music as a design brief. Highly architectural pieces of music are already perfectly balanced in their blend between variation and repetition, and are therefore great for regulating order. I have chosen my own piece of music, the Pathetique sonata by Beethoven, as inspiration because of its complex architecture, and because there are many professional analyses of it from which to study. My goal in this thesis is to reveal the wealth of architecural ideas hidden within highly structured pieces of music.

This paper is one of a set of lessons prepared for the course of “Theory of Architecture” (Faculty of Architecture — “La Sapienza” University of Rome). The didactic aim was to present — to students attending the first year of courses — some methods for the beginning stages of design and their applicability to any kind creative work. The brief multimedia hypertext quoted at the end of this paper was carried out in collaboration with the “LaMA” (Laboratorio Multimediale di Architettura) as a test for new educational tools applied to first our “e-learning” experiences.
In this portfolio of compositions, I have explored the concept of musical ambiguity. I perceive this kind of ambiguity as an interesting and purposeful instability, created by employing a variety of techniques to arrange and manipulate complex compositional materials. Interrupting the narrative flow with unexpected, disturbing fragments should increase the expressive tension of the musical structure and narrative, thereby obliterating ‘habitual’ hierarchies of perception and eradicating a false sense of stability in the listener. My techniques include the simultaneous juxtaposition of several aural ‘viewpoints’, such as dense versus lucid textures, as well as the fragmentation and repositioning of chosen elements. In the analyses of my compositions I have made use of some ideas and terms from the visual arts, architecture and philosophy to clarify my arguments. Every musical element from tonality, texture and rhythm to structure and narrative is questioned and reinterpreted by means of fragmentation and juxtaposition with the aim of creating layers of textures and timbres. Prior to this treatment, a composition is generally begun with a musical idea, derived from my mental ‘sound library’, which already alludes to timbre, instrumentation, atmosphere, modality and provides motivic impetus. Furthermore, a lively collaboration with musicians plays an important role during the compositional process and has enabled me to find my own voice through the shaping of the experimental materials into the two orchestral works, a few ensemble pieces and solo works.

Architectural design in urban Africa has long been defined from an outsider's point of view. It's high time that Africans begun to craft their own identity, even in their built environment. African urban music is a metaphor of both local expression and global appreciation. Music and architecture have a resonance in the design elements and principles that are used in their composition. Therefore, this dissertation demonstrates the possibility of using African urban music as a way of inspiring and basing the architectural landscape of urban Africa.

At a time when technology has unleashed architects to design the most extravagant tangible forms, could questioning the concept of form in an abstract medium like music, which lies in the territory of idea, and incorporating its ephemeral qualities into the spatial realm lead to a reconsideration of architectural form? -- Isben Önen's insightful book offers a new view of the relationship between the histories of Western music and architecture. It demonstrates both the profound overlaps and divergences between the two fields, presenting a wide-ranging understanding of the development of each field. This is cultural history at its best: richly informative and deeply engaging. (Christopher Long) -- Throughout history there has been a constant fascination of architects with music. Isben Önen, an architect and a musician himself, sets out explore the formal correspondence between his two fields of expertise, from Vitruvius to Leon Battista Alberti; from Gabrieli through the enlightenment, to Alban Berg and all the way to Renzo Piano’s and Luigi Nono’s contemporary Prometeo. This uncommonly vast and profound piece of scholarship is of interest not only to musicians and architects but also the non-specialized public. (Liane Lefaivre)
Different art branches meet in many fields. Words & sentences of art are similar as regards harmonic elements, unity & rhythm. We focus in this study on those fields which make the architecture meets the music arts, and how each art is affecting the others? There has been a tremendous development in architectural concepts. In the past, we had obtained a complete symphony through the architectural works. Presently, we invent flexible, dynamic architectural models by integrating music wave frequencies using computer simulation programs or by de-constructing forms into free separate pixels. Step 1, Explaining the mutual relation between music & its philosophical effect on the architectural ideas. Step 2, Analyzing created architectural products which are designed by the musical harmony inside the computer simulation program. Step 3 Finding if these new design methods will meet the society‘s desire & acceptance in the future, or not?
Dancing Architecture: The parallel evolution of Bharatanatyam and South Indian Architecture
Tracey Eve Winton
In her book, "Indian Classical dance", Kapila Vatsyayan describes dance as the highest order of spiritual discipline, the enactment of which is symbolic of a ritual sacrifice of one's being to a transcendental order. The Natya-Shashtra, a treatise on drama and dance, reveals the status of the performing arts as equal to prayer and sacrificial rites in the pursuit of moksha, the release form cycles of rebirth. Both dance and dancer function as a vehicle for divine invocation and are mirrored in the architectural surroundings. To investigate this connection between dance and place, it is imperative to understand the mythical origins of architecture and temple dance. the Hindu philosophy of the cosmic man and its religious relationship with the Dravidian architecture of Tamil Nadu is the starting point of the discussion of a south Indian aesthetic. The Vastu-purusha mandala is a philosophical diagram that provides a foundation for Hindu aesthetics, linking physical distance, religious position and universal scale in both time and space. Used as an architectural diagram, it becomes a mediator between the human body and the cosmos. The temple, as a setting for dance performances, and constructed based on the mandala, shares this quality of immersing its participants into a multi-sensory spatial experience. However, while the link between architecture and dance culture was explicit up to the 18th century, it is less compelling in the context of modern south Indian architecture. With an increasingly unstable political landscape during the 20th century, architectural growth in south India during this period is almost stagnant. Unfortunately, this creates a break in the continuity and comparative evolution of dance and architecture, leading to the fragmentation and abstraction of dance in its modern form. South Indian dance has since transformed into a prominent cultural symbol and various incarnations of the dancer have become the isolated yet important link, between tradition and modernity. As an evolving living embodiment of contemporary culture and identity, her transformation from Devadasi, to an icon of nationalism, to a choreographer of 'high art' provides the foundation for the reintegration of architecture in the cultural fabric. The culmination of this research aims to reinstate the importance of architecture as a cultural nexus in order to restring a fragmented dance, community and cultural identity.
Jocelyn Wolfe , Bruce Wolfe
We engage with a place in a multitude of ways, through all of the senses. We are all an extension of place, but in modern societies the visual often typifies our sense of belonging to place at the expense of other senses. The architecture of our surroundings, for example, is predominantly described in visual terms. Art and architecture are often conflated. Art in architecture is often reduced to the visual, and the integration with or application to the built form. Yet architecture gives an acoustic quality of material and space that is inseparable from the experience. Commonly, we are more touched by what we hear than what we see. How, then, do we know our musical selves through architecture? This paper discusses one way of knowing through “The Piano Mill Project”, a hybrid building and musical instrument, designed and purpose-built to house sixteen reclaimed pianos – vestiges of colonialism, post-colonialism, artistic hierarchies, and new beginnings.

Criteria for the School of Music theses:
- Discuss proposed project with major professor.
- Develop Thesis Proposal in consultation with major professor and submit in written form to Graduate Coordinator. This should be done as soon as possible, but no later than the semester preceding the semester of graduation. (PLEASE NOTE: With the exception of some faculty in the Music Education Division, committee members are NOT normally available during summer months. Therefore students who wish to graduate in the summer should plan to have all the requirements for the Thesis completed by the end of the spring semester.)
- Submit Thesis committee member approval form to the Graduate College.
- After approval is granted, the student should begin collection of data pertinent to the project. If data will be collected from human subjects, permission must be obtained from the Graduate College by submitting the Human Subjects Review Form available from the Graduate College. Students are advised to remain in frequent contact with all members of the committee throughout this process. The Thesis should conform in scope and content to the original proposal. Deviations from the approved Thesis format must be approved by the Thesis committee.
- When the Thesis is completed, the document must be approved by the student's Thesis Committee.
- Each student shall meet with an appropriate person in the Graduate College for purposes of determining adherence of Thesis to written policies of the Graduate College. Students are advised to be in contact with the Graduate College soon after approval of the Thesis proposal.
- Copies of the Thesis in final form must be filed with the Graduate College according to regulations specified in the Graduate College Thesis and Dissertation Manual
Criteria for the Music Education emphasis thesis:
- The function of the Thesis is to systematically investigate a research problem, with outcomes that generate insights or answers related to that problem. These outcomes may or may not yield new knowledge, but they are expected to investigate a new problem or to replicate a published study in a different setting in order to verify or dispute previous findings.
- The Thesis is expected to demonstrate a practical understanding of scholarly process. It will contain all of the elements of a research document, including data collecting and analysis, and will use a recognized or logically structured research design.
- The degree candidate must possess the necessary data collection and analysis skills that address the needs of the study. Examples of these skills may be statistics, narrative analysis, foreign languages, computer programming, or music analysis.
- The topic of the Thesis will be based on a problem that can be systematically investigated.
- The Thesis will be developed from a formal written proposal that has been approved by the graduate student's Thesis Committee. This proposal will include an explicit problem statement, study parameters, and selected literature review. It will contain a description of research method, data collection, and data analysis. There will also be data presented from a pilot study or other preliminary investigative process that is consistent with the purposes of the study and its design.
- The Thesis must follow the form and content of the accepted Thesis proposal and can only be changed upon approval of the Graduate College, Graudate Coordinator, Chair of Music Education, and all members of the student's Thesis Committee.
- The Thesis will adhere to the guidelines indicated in the style manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Graduate College Thesis and Dissertation Manual available from the Graduate College.
All Thesis proposals and/or Thesis drafts must be submitted to the Chair of the respective graduate student's Thesis Committee according to the dates listed on the last page of this handbook, including proposals from those individuals seeking to continue or complete Thesis work during the summer. Failure to meet these deadlines could affect timely review of submitted materials. Student supervision of Thesis work during the summer is dependent on availability of committee members. (PLEASE NOTE: With the exception of some faculty in the Music Education Division, committee members are NOT normally available during summer months. Therefore students who wish to graduate in the summer should plan to have all the requirements for the Thesis completed by the end of the spring semester.)
For all matters of writing style, consult one of the approved style manuals and the Graduate College Thesis and Dissertation Manual . A preview meeting must be scheduled during the first eight weeks of the semester in which the student wishes to graduate (exact dates will be posted). The preview meeting is scheduled with the Graduate College Thesis reader who will check for appropriate formatting. All formatting MUST adhere to the Graduate College Thesis and Dissertation Manual .
The final form of the document shall be filed with ScholarWorks one week prior to the final day of class during the semester the student wishes to graduate. Papers submitted to [email protected] will be retained in a backend repository unless the student provides permission to publicly preserve the work.
What Six Senior Music Majors’ Say About Their Theses
As the Spring semester concludes and in anticipation for the Class of 2024’s graduation, the Music Department asked six Senior Music Majors to expand on their creative theses and offer advice to future students preparing their own. The Music Department is proud to share the results of each Music Major’s cumulative work at Princeton, which highlights scholarly research and true mastery of their disciplines.
Jared Bozinko
Thesis: SIN PHONY for two soprano clarinets, two auxiliary clarinets, two saxophones, and two horns
Jared: In the process of writing SIN PHONY , I found inspiration in seemingly twee places. Poulenc’s Sonata for horn, trumpet and trombone, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet , a 1995 clarinet quartet by Met Opera clarinetist Sean Osborn, and Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles , a quirky wind quintet version of his Musica ricercata . SIN PHONY is a chamber piece, technically an octet, for clarinets, saxes, and horns. My advisor, Dr. Dmitri Tymoczko, has been indispensable to the process, guiding me all fall semester in writing short chamber music sketches, which became the basis of the material that makes up my thesis. The process was so smooth and, at points, genuinely fun, and it was a great challenge as a composer to blend disparate thematic material from sketches written completely separately into cohesive, compelling music that had cohesion and let my compositional voice shine through.
Tanaka Dunbar Ngwara
Thesis: Paivapo ’76: A New Musical
Tanaka: My thesis was an original musical entitled Paivapo ’76 and set in Domboshava Zimbabwe in 1976, during the Zimbabwean Liberation War. The show deals with the conflict between traditional practice/spirituality and Christianity, and explores themes of community, first love and grief. I received the Alex Adam ’07 Award to conduct research for this project over the summer and since the musical also served as independent work for my theater and music theater certificates, I was able to premiere the piece on May 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Wallace Theater in the Lewis Center Complex.
Thesis: Flung Into Space: A Collection of Songs
Nina: My thesis is a collection of six songs titled Flung Into Space . It consists of three story heavy songs about my life, along with an electronic counterpart for each which explores the same topic from a new perspective.
Rupert Peacock
Thesis: John Farrant’s “O Lord Allmighty (ca. 1570): The English Anthem at Ely Cathedral With Critical Edition
Rupert: My thesis is a critical edition and history surrounding a piece of unpublished English choral music. The piece is called “O Lord Almighty” by John Farrant. I went to the library at Cambridge University and looked through manuscripts from Ely cathedral, which is about 10 minutes from where I live in the UK. I found lots of great and famous choral works, but stumbled across this piece by Farrant almost by accident. Professor Wendy Heller taught me everything I needed to know to get this done. She’s an expert in critical editions and this kind of research. I couldn’t have done it without her.
Molly Trueman
Thesis: Angels & Aliens: The Making of an Album
Molly: For my thesis, I wrote and recorded my debut full-length album entitled Angels & Aliens . Based around acoustic guitar and vocals, the album has an alternative indie-folk feel. This is a milestone I’ve been working towards for a few years now, so I’m incredibly grateful that this album ended up being my thesis.
Gabriela Veciana
Thesis: Breaking the Sound Barrier: Investigating Latine Racial Bias Through Reggaetón Music
Gabriela: For my thesis, I researched colorism within Latine communities through reggaetón music. I knew I was interested in looking at identity and Latin music, but it wasn’t until I heard my advisor, Lisa Margulis, present her work in music cognition that I saw a potential connection with psychology fields.
If you were to describe your thesis in one word, what would it be?
Jared : Darksided (hehe)
Tanaka: Fusion
Nina: Honest
Rupert: Difficult!
Molly: Extraterrestrial
Gabriela: Interdisciplinary!
What advice would you give to future seniors on creating a successful thesis?
Jared: Don’t be afraid that your thesis isn’t going to materialize in time, instead, always try to remember just why you chose this amazing department, and to remember your likely lifelong personal devotion to music. There’s a lot to love about being able to share your art as the capstone of your work at Princeton.
Tanaka: If you can, use the thesis as an opportunity to work on something that you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the time to do! It’s amazing to have the excuse of a thesis project to give you the drive and space to complete it.
Nina: Try to start without judgement. The hardest part of writing my thesis was my own expectations of what my thesis should look like.
Rupert: It has to be something you care about and/or are passionate about. It got to the point where I was actually looking forward to the next steps in my thesis and enjoyed working on it. That was crucial for motivation!
Molly: In terms of creating a thesis, my biggest piece of advice is to find a topic that you’re truly passionate about. Don’t settle for something you don’t care about.
Gabriela: You don’t always have to have a topic and then find an advisor, you can start by finding an advisor you are interested in working with and craft your topic from there.
What are your plans after graduation?
Jared: Still figuring it out, though I’m certain I want music to be a core component of my everyday life. I am trying to move to Philadelphia and get involved with their variety of music scenes, from DIY punk basement shows to chamber orchestras to early music groups. I also want to continue composing and am eager to hone my craft even further wherever I go.
Tanaka: I’m going to attend the Royal Academy of Music for Music Theater vocal performance! I’m very excited to be in a new city, and get to do another music degree in a conservatory.
Nina: I’m moving to Nashville, TN and pursuing a career as a performing musician. I’ll also be releasing music soon as a part of the band Upwhirl, as well as later this year releasing my thesis.
Rupert: I am going to split my time between singing and construction!
Molly: After graduation, I’m going to McGill University to study in the Sound Recording program.
Gabriela: I hope to work in theater administration in New York!
