Examples: Healthcare Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a healthcare-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various healthcare-related degree programs to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

  • Improving Follow-Up Care for Homeless Populations in North County San Diego (Sanchez, 2021)
  • On the Incentives of Medicare’s Hospital Reimbursement and an Examination of Exchangeability (Elzinga, 2016)
  • Managing the healthcare crisis: the career narratives of nurses (Krueger, 2021)
  • Methods for preventing central line-associated bloodstream infection in pediatric haematology-oncology patients: A systematic literature review (Balkan, 2020)
  • Farms in Healthcare: Enhancing Knowledge, Sharing, and Collaboration (Garramone, 2019)
  • When machine learning meets healthcare: towards knowledge incorporation in multimodal healthcare analytics (Yuan, 2020)
  • Integrated behavioural healthcare: The future of rural mental health (Fox, 2019)
  • Healthcare service use patterns among autistic adults: A systematic review with narrative synthesis (Gilmore, 2021)
  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Combatting Burnout and Compassionate Fatigue among Mental Health Caregivers (Lundquist, 2022)
  • Transgender and gender-diverse people’s perceptions of gender-inclusive healthcare access and associated hope for the future (Wille, 2021)
  • Efficient Neural Network Synthesis and Its Application in Smart Healthcare (Hassantabar, 2022)
  • The Experience of Female Veterans and Health-Seeking Behaviors (Switzer, 2022)
  • Machine learning applications towards risk prediction and cost forecasting in healthcare (Singh, 2022)
  • Does Variation in the Nursing Home Inspection Process Explain Disparity in Regulatory Outcomes? (Fox, 2020)

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

Pandemic proved to be a revelatory time for PhD student

Shannon whittaker, phd ’24 (social and behavioral sciences, public health).

If you think writing a dissertation is hard, try doing it during a pandemic.

Shannon Whittaker, who is graduating from the Yale School of Public Health this spring with a PhD in social and behavioral sciences and public health, started her dissertation while COVID-19 had shut down most of the world. She calls it the most revelatory point of her time at YSPH. It was as much a self-revelation as a scholarly one.

“I learned to rely on and trust myself and my instincts, which fostered a sense of self-reliance,” she said.

“I also learned how to compartmentalize research and my personal life,” she added. “Instead of working around the clock, since I was working from home, I treated my PhD like a 9-to-5 job – sometimes a 9-to-2, even – which allowed me to take care of myself mentally while also increasing productivity. Even as the world returns to ‘normal,’ I’ve retained this change to achieve work-life balance.”

Whittaker earned her MPH from Brown University in 2015 after receiving her BA in public health there the previous year. She came to YSPH in 2018, interested in researching the intersection of race, health, and history, and how social, structural, and political processes impact the health of marginalized communities, especially Black communities.

YSPH, she said, has profoundly shaped her development as a scholar. During her time here, she has earned two competitive grants: the National Institutes of Health’s Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award (a/k/a the F31) , and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholars Fellowship . She has also collaborated with researchers from various disciplines on three first-authored published manuscripts.

In addition, Whittaker helps other students acclimate to YSPH as a diversity fellow with the Office of Student Development and Diversity. This is where she said her most significant contribution to YSPH took place: helping create a space for underrepresented students and advocating for them.

“It was here that I learned what type of scholar I wanted to be,” she said. “I came to understand that while the path to impactful science often involves challenges, the privilege of contributing to knowledge production is one I deeply appreciate.”

Whittaker said that every professor she’s had at YSPH has helped shape her, Three in particular stand out. Danya Keene , associate professor of social and behavioral sciences, was Whittaker’s advisor and guided her through the intricacies of research. Trace Kershaw , SBS department chair and Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Public Health (Social and Behavioral Sciences), “consistently offered unwavering support” in her six years here. Carolyn Roberts , assistant professor of history of medicine and science of medicine, and of African American studies, was a valued mentor. “Her guidance emphasized the importance of exploring beyond the boundaries of my discipline,” Whittaker said.

Whittaker is exploring all the options available to her after graduation, but that journey will begin with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Innovation in Social Science at Boston University. She said she will miss having as much access to “my YSPH family,” but that she’s looking forward to experiencing life “beyond the PhD bubble.”

Whittaker leaves YSPH with one important piece of advice for the students following her: “Resist being molded.”

“Academia takes a one-size-fits all approach, which does not always work because we all exist within our own context,” she said. “Who do you want to be? What kind of research do you want to do? I think before starting a program you should ask yourself those questions and make sure to check in with yourself as often as possible to stay grounded and remain true to who you are. Also, surround yourself with people who will always bring you back to you.”

This guide should tell you what to write at what specific instance. Here is a sample outline: Topic of the study Introduction. Start with the thesis statement, followed by the objectives of the study. Then, the rest of the introduction should be used to set the background for the study. Literature review: Review relevant resources about the topic. Methodology: Explain the methodology that was used during the study. Is Results and analysis: Provide the results gathered during the study. Discussion and conclusion: Here, you should discuss the study results and demonstrate whether they approve or disapprove the thesis statement. If you found any gaps in the previous studies, highlight them too and call for further studies. Bibliography: This is a list of all the resources you used to prepare the paper. Doctoral graduate combines economics with health policy to advance health equity

April 29, 2024  | Erin Bluvas,  [email protected]

“My journey in public health began with a deep-rooted interest in health equity,” says Dakshu Jindal , who graduates in May with a Ph.D. in Health Services Policy and Management (HSPM). “This was driven by my upbringing in India, where I witnessed stark disparities in health care access.”

Dakshu Jindal

Jindal studied economics at the University of Delhi (bachelor’s) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (master’s). During her graduate program, she began consulting for India’s National Health Systems Resource Center at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Her three years at the center exposed Jindal to health policy, including the nuances of financing health in a complex nation like India. She also began to realize how improvements in policy can positively impact health systems and communities. An internship in the Philippines through the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced her to financing and policy in a global setting. Together, these experiences cemented Jindal’s commitment to completing a doctoral degree in the field.

“USC offered an incredibly unique program in health services policy and management ,” she says. “The department had diverse faculty and an inclination toward use of economics to conduct health services research. I strongly felt that I could leverage my academic background in economics and interest in public health to succeed in the program.”

At the Arnold School, Jindal gained research experience as a graduate assistant on projects within her department and at the Center for Community Health Alignment (CCHA). She found mentors in her dissertation co-chairs, Brian Chen and John Brooks , as well as CCHA executive director Julie Smithwick .

“Dr. Chen always motivated me to perform my best and expect more from my work, and Dr. Brooks always stressed the importance of the implications of my study results, which pushed me to be a better health services researcher,” says the Norman J. Arnold Fellow, who received guidance and support from Nicole Hair and Adam Lutz as well. “I have worked with Ms. Smithwick for five years, conducting research on the implementation and effectiveness of community health workers programs, and she has been a great mentor.”

The department had diverse faculty and an inclination toward use of economics to conduct health services research. I strongly felt that I could leverage my academic background in economics and interest in public health to succeed in the program.

Outside of the Arnold School, Jindal was selected into USC’s Preparing Future Faculty Program and received a SPARC grant from the Office of the Vice President for Research to support her dissertation research into how state laws influence access to physical therapy among Medicare patients. Her dozen or so publications cover various topics, but the theme of her research is how different laws, policies or programs impact health outcomes.

“I aim to leverage my expertise in health economics to explore research studies that improve health care outcomes and access,” Jindal says of her next steps. “By collaborating with stakeholders across sectors, I want to contribute meaningfully to the field of public health and advance health equity for all.”

Melissa Eggen receives prize for outstanding dissertation

Melissa Eggen, PhD, MPH

Melissa Eggen, PhD, MPH , is the winner of the John M. Houchens Prize, which honors a former registrar of the University of Louisville and is awarded by UofL's Graduate School to the doctoral student who presents the most meritorious dissertation for the current commencement. Dr. Eggen is graduating this May 2024 after earning a PhD in Public Health Sciences with a specialization in Health Management and Policy. Titled "Socioecological Factors Associated with the Timing of Prenatal Care Initiation in Kentucky and Beyond: An Exploratory Study," Eggen's dissertation, explores multi-level barriers and facilitators associated with the timing of pregnant women seeking prenatal care in the United States and in Kentucky, using the Socioecological Model as the guiding framework.

As part of her dissertation, Eggen used data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, collected and compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to examine factors associated with prenatal care timing among women in Kentucky. This research is a unique and significant contribution to state-wide efforts to improve maternal health across the Commonwealth, as Kentucky has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country. According to the latest numbers published by the CDC, 38.4 out of 100,000 live births in Kentucky led to maternal death during the 2018-2021 period. This rate is only slightly lower than the rate in a few states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, but higher than all other states. Moreover, maternal mortality is significantly higher among racial minorities, especially among the non-Hispanic Black population, both nationally and in Kentucky.

Eggen’s research targets one of the major root causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in Kentucky and inequities in maternal mortality: the adequacy and timing of prenatal care. She methodically investigated each potential factor contributing to the adverse outcomes and identified access to health insurance, household income, maternal education, and pregnancy wantedness as the major contributing factors to using prenatal care in Kentucky. The findings under this aim of her dissertation are currently under review at a top maternal and child health journal.

Strikingly, maternal mortality has been increasing in recent years. One of the less understood factors in the increase is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through another aim of her thesis, Eggen is one of the first in the country and the first in Kentucky to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the timing of prenatal care initiation. In this innovative study, she uses a creative method to distinguish the effect of the pandemic from underlying institutional and socioeconomic factors.

"The quality of Melissa's dissertation research and her experience, deep knowledge, and expertise in the field of maternal and child health have allowed her to shoulder major related efforts in addition to her dissertation," explained her mentor, Seyed Karimi, PhD, an associate professor in the Dept. of Health Management & Systems Sciences. "As a prime example, she is currently the PI on a State University Partnership grant assessing systems and policies to address maternal health in Kentucky."

Eggen has an MPH in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Illinois in Chicago and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Kentucky. She has over 15 years of experience working in community-based and state-wide non-profit organizations and has a special interest in conducting research at the local level to inform policy and practice. In particular, her research is centered on better understanding reproductive and maternal healthcare outcomes and patient experience using quantitative and mixed methods approaches.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Eggen on receiving this well-deserved recognition.
