Recruitment agencies are fast-paced environments which means recruiters won’t have much time to dedicate to reading unsolicited cover letters. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth trying. The golden rule is to keep it short – no more than half a page – and sharp – get your main points across in the first two sentences.

2. Narrow your focus

Even though you may be applying speculatively, don’t be too broad. It’s much easier for a recruiter to place someone who has specific expertise and experience that relates directly to a job vacancy they need to fill. And if you can highlight this in the first paragraph then your letter has got a good chance of being read.

3. Start with a killer intro

Think about how many unsolicited covering letters a recruitment consultant gets sent every day. To stand a chance of being read, yours has to sell you and your suitability from the outset. If you’ve been given a referral from someone, mention that in the first sentence – it shows that you are likely to be a trustworthy candidate and the personal connection can be a good selling point.

4. Pinpoint your expertise

Don’t do waffle – the recruiter will spend around 5 seconds on your opening sentence so if you don’t excite them in that time, chances are they won’t read on. You may have just the right skills they are looking for, but if these are buried in the second half of your recruitment letter, these skills become worthless. 

5. Honesty is the best policy

We’ve all watched ‘The Apprentice’ Interviews  – it NEVER pays to lie in your application process! Be honest with your skillset, your position in the company and your next career goal. Similarly, don’t oversell your qualifications or any training you’ve had.

6. Highlight your successes

Don’t just list your skills and qualifications – talk about how you’ve achieved success in your current or previous positions. Share quantifiable achievements that showcase your ability to deliver results. These examples help recruitment agencies understand your potential value to their clients.

7. Write in proper business speak

Txt talk this isnt lol! You might have forgotten how to use punctuation and grammar with your mates, but when it comes to writing a cover letter to a recruitment agency, old school rules apply. That means being coherent in what you say and how you say it. Keep the writing concise but fluid, and don’t forget to check your spelling, grammar and punctuation.

8. Don’t forget the details

In your final proofread, make sure you’ve included all of your contact information and that it is correct. Finish on a positive note – reiterate your enthusiasm for working with the agency and express your hope for a successful collaboration. Indicate your availability for further discussion.

Children’s Law Center is seeking candidates for the 2024 fall term. This position is a hybrid role, with some expectation of in-person work at Children’s Law Center’s office. The deadline to apply is June 28th, 2024.

Program Description

Children’s Law Center (CLC) hosts a comprehensive, hands-on internship program. Law clerk and intern positions are available during spring, summer, and fall semesters. Law clerk applicants must be current law students or recent law school graduates. All positions are unpaid and can be taken for credit. Hours are flexible. Generally, spring openings are posted in October, summer positions are posted in November and fall openings are posted in May.

Special Legal Projects is a new project at Children’s Law Center that is expanding the organization’s legal tools to include other forms of innovative healthy housing advocacy and collaborations, impact litigation, and new approaches to working toward a future where every child can grow up with a strong foundation of family, health and education and live in a world free from poverty, trauma, racism and other forms of oppression.

Position Summary

Special Legal Projects oversees the intake team at Children’s Law Center. The intake team are often the first people that community members speak with at Children’s Law Center.

Working with the intake team, this law clerk will work with community members to help determine how Children’s Law Center can help them. The law clerk will also support brief services, provide support with coordinated intake processes and work on other related projects. This position will include extensive client contact, though much of the contact will be over the phone. Law clerks will need to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, though hours do not all need to be daytime hours.

National Center for Youth Law  

The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) works to amplify youth power, dismantle racism and other structural inequities, and build just policies, practices, and culture in support of young people. Our efforts employ research, community collaboration, impact litigation, and policy advocacy strategies to advance justice in a way that fundamentally transforms our nation’s approach to education, health, immigration, foster care, and youth justice. Our vision is a world in which every young person thrives and has a full and fair opportunity to achieve the future they envision for themselves.  

The Work  

The goal of the policy strategy work at NCYL is to facilitate strategic and coordinated legislation and policy initiatives, with internal and external stakeholders, and align with NCYL priorities among and across all NCYL teams (Child Welfare, Compassionate Systems, Collaborative Responses to Sexual Exploitation, Education, Health, Immigration, Justice and Equity, Youth Justice). This work is responsive to teams’ needs and requires a variety of approaches such as research, data analysis and collection, collaboration on strategic communications, and developing youth engagement. 

Position    

NCYL seeks one (1) policy-focused graduate student volunteer to support NCYL’s Policy Strategy function during fall 2024 on projects impacting historically marginalized children and youth. 

Essential Functions   

  • Research novel issues within youth law and policy 
  • Analyze and interpret data related to youth systems 
  • Develop, collect, and disseminate policy briefs and other resources to state and local stakeholders 
  • Support legislative policy and/or budget campaigns 
  • Participate in state and local coalitions and provide technical assistance to community partners 
  • Collect and organize internal campaign information to build institutional knowledge 
  • Track and analyze legislative trends 
  • Support advancing policy initiatives across teams 
  • Analyze and interpret data related to youth systems  

Qualifications   

  • Current graduate student, second year of graduate school or beyond 
  • Ability to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week from approximately September through December 2024  
  • Demonstrated understanding of NCYL’s mission and commitment to advocating for children and youth 
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion 
  • At least one year of experience with and/or exposure to at least one of the following: communities of color; low-income communities; child- or youth-centered activities 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and complete multiple projects 
  • Excellent communication skills 

Physical Requirements   

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.     

Location and Pay  

This is an unpaid volunteer position. Volunteers will be able to work remotely. As fall 2024 approaches, NCYL will continue to evaluate whether clerks can complete any portion of the clerkship in person.

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the position is filled or until June 3, 2024 . Applicants must submit the following:  

  • Résumé (not including GPA);  
  • Cover letter describing your particular interest in working for NCYL and commitment to NCYL’s mission; and   
  • 5–7-page writing sample of primary authorship that demonstrates policy or legislative analytical skills.
