Teacher working with Early Childhood Student

The Illinois State University (ISU)  College of Education Early Childhood (ECE) Online-Workforce Program  is accepting applicants for the fall 2024 cohort.

The 100% online program is designed for professionals currently working with children birth through five years of age with an associate’s degree, Gateway Level 4, and experience in the early childhood field. This two-year, online program allows working professionals to earn their bachelor’s degree and PEL (Professional Educator License) while continuing to work.

Upon completion of the program and licensure requirements, students will also receive an Early Childhood Special Education letter of approval, allowing them to teach special education in pre-kindergarten.

“We prioritize student well-being and creating a supportive environment for current educators,” said Linda Ruhe Marsh, program coordinator. “The cohort model helps to foster student relationships and support, creating a community-based educational process even with the online structure.”

The program also helps connect students with specialized support who are uniquely equipped to assist non-traditional students with both academic and professional circumstances. Faculty and staff understand the specialized needs of students as filling the roles of working professionals, parents, and caregivers all at once.

“I love that this program allows me to continue to prioritize my family, but at the same time focus on my own educational needs and career,” said graduating student Becky Pajak.

Professionals interested in the program can begin the pre-admissions process by submitting the program interest form . Prospective students can also join one of the upcoming virtual information sessions to hear from program advisors and ask questions about the program or application process.

Early Childhood Education, option Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education (Birth - Grade 2)

The  Early Childhood Education   option of the B.S.Ed. in Elementary Education has two tracks from which a student can choose. One track leads to Professional Education Licensure to teach children; graduates are qualified to teach in birth to grade three programs and classrooms, preschool, and prekindergarten programs for children with special needs. The second track (non-licensure/ECH Gateway Credential) leads to the completion of Gateway credentials, rather than teaching licensure; graduates are qualified to teach children outside of a classroom, such as day care centers and pre-kindergarten programs.

Teaching Licensure Option

If you seek a career in a public school setting that requires an Illinois teaching license, then you should choose the  teaching licensure  option. Graduates of this option will earn a B.S. in Education in Elementary Education, the Illinois Early Childhood Teaching Licensure, Early Childhood Special Education Approval, Gateways ECE credential level 5, and Special Education Approval. This qualifies you to work and teach in programs and classrooms for children from birth through second grade, as well as to teach special education in pre-kindergarten.

Non-Licensure Option

If you seek a career in an early childhood educational setting that does not require an Illinois teaching license, such as running your own childcare center, you should choose the non-licensure option. Graduates of this option  will earn   a B.S. in Education in Elementary Education, Gateways ECE credential level 5, Gateways Infant Toddler credential level 5, Gateways Illinois Director credential level 1, and the Developmental Therapy credential in Early Intervention.

Gateways Credentials are awarded and recognized by the Illinois Department of Human Services. Credentials are required to attain higher levels of rating by Excelerate Illinois, a rating system of early childhood programs in Illinois. If you would like to work with younger children, birth to age five, and get a job in a high quality setting, or state-funded programs, you must hold a higher level of Gateways credentials.

If you successfully complete ECH 273, ECH 276, ECH 277, SPED 250, and SPED 392 in the program, and if you complete the required EI System Overview Training,  you will be qualified to apply for and receive the Developmental Therapy credential in Early Intervention. T hese trainings can be fulfilled through the Illinois Early Intervention Training Program using the following link  https://eitp.education.illinois.edu/  (click on t raining ).

Entitled Gateways Program

The Early Childhood Education program is Gateways Early Childhood Education (ECE) credential level 5 entitled, Infant Toddler credential level 5 entitled, and Illinois Director credential level 1 entitled.

Career Opportunities

In addition to teaching in state-funded pre-kindergarten, early special education, and kindergarten through grade two classrooms, candidates are employed in early intervention programs, childcare centers, Head Start programs, and private preschools. Candidates also open their own childcare center or their own business to provide early intervention services.

As the emphasis on the importance of early childhood care and education increases throughout the country, there is a growing demand for certified early childhood teachers.

Strengths of the Early Childhood Education Program

Coursework and classroom experiences are offered to prepare future teachers to

  • utilize their understanding of children’s characteristics and needs to create developmentally appropriate learning experiences
  • use a variety of assessment tools to document children’s learning
  • employ practices that accommodate the needs of diverse groups of children
  • work with parents and the community to foster children’s learning
  • use technology to facilitate children’s engagement in learning
  • create supporting learning environments
  • reflect on their practice and engage in continuing professional renewal

During the first semester of the sophomore year, candidates explore theories and principles of child development. Later in the sophomore year, candidates examine developmentally appropriate assessment strategies for children to identify and meet individual children's needs, and learn techniques for working with and involving families and communities.

During the first semester of the junior year, candidates focus on working with pre-primary children (infants, toddlers, and preschoolers). Later in the junior year, candidates complete methods courses that prepare them to teach literacy, social studies, science, and mathematics in the primary classroom (K-2nd Grade). Candidates also acquire an in-depth understanding of teaching literacy as they complete a young children’s literature course, a course in literacy development for toddlers and preschool children, a methods course for teaching literacy in the primary grades, and a course that prepares them to assess and provide appropriate instruction for young struggling readers.

Throughout the program, future teachers learn how to integrate technology into their classroom instruction and to use assistive technology to meet the unique needs of children with specific challenges. Required coursework prepares them to work with students who have diverse learning needs, and to work with parents, families, and the community to enhance student learning.

Field Experiences

During the junior year, candidates apply their knowledge and skills as they work with children and teachers in the first semester (6 weeks in an infant/toddler classroom and 6 weeks in a preschool classroom) and in primary settings in the second semester (6 weeks in a Kindergarten classroom and 6 weeks in either a 1st or 2nd grade classroom). During the first semester of the senior year, they teach a variety of lessons in a pre-kindergarten classroom during a fourteen week (half days) field experience.

Student Teaching

Early childhood education candidates complete a sixteen-week student teaching experience in a primary classroom. Student teaching can be completed in the following regions:

  • REGION A Chicago Suburbs (North, West and South)
  • REGION B Chicago Public Schools (City of Chicago)
  • REGION C Quad Cities (including Bettendorf/Davenport IA)
  • REGION D Western/Central Illinois (Quincy, Peoria, Macomb)

Program Requirements

Group members work together toward common goals. Collaboration is valued inside and outside the classroom as a way to create strong communities.
  • Disposition 2 Commitment to Learning: Active learning and professional development create exemplary educators. Valuing research, learning in all areas of instruction, problem solving, self-reflection and personal growth creates exemplary students and educators. Through participating in professional development, learning of best practices, and actively engaging in new ideas and knowledge building, individuals show a commitment to learning in and beyond the classroom.

The 5 Best Online Education Degree Providers in Illinois

Illinois has a total of 12 education degree-granting institutions that provide online education degrees. These range from community colleges offering an associate in early childhood development or human services, to nationally ranked universities that offer a wide spread of masters level and education endorsement-level programming. While future students may want to go to the “best” online institution in their state for education degrees, they should take some to double check what exact degrees are offered by their institution of choice at the directory of all online education degrees at the bottom of the page. To select the following top five universities, we’ve looked at two factors: the number of fully online education degrees offered by an institution, and an “academic prestige” score. The academic prestige score takes into account metrics such as average amount of financial need received, average class sizes, admissions standards, and the percentage of faculty holding terminal degrees in their field. Also note that the tuition numbers below are just indicators of relatively how expensive or affordable a college is. The tuition numbers below, specifically, are the in-state (where applicable) undergraduate yearlong tuition rates for education degrees. Many universities, however, have similar tuition rates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

A child points at a board where the words “Cicada Parade-A” are written beside paper cutouts of cicadas.

Here Come a Trillion Cicadas. The Midwest Is Abuzz.

Illinois is the center of the cicada emergence that is on the way. Two groups of cicadas are expected at once, leaving some people queasy, others thrilled.

As the third graders of Cumberland Elementary in the Chicago suburbs colored, clipped and glued paper to make cicadas with filmy wings, they confided their fears about what is about to happen in Illinois.

“Some people think cicadas can suck your brains out,” said Willa, a red-haired 8-year-old in a Star Wars T-shirt.

“They’re going to be so loud,” Christopher, 9, said as he colored his cicada intently. “I hate noise.”

“It’s kind of scary,” Madison, 8, said while picking through markers scattered on a green table. “What if they do something to me?”

Not to worry, Madison and Willa: Cicadas don’t actually bite, and they prefer to suck tree sap. (And Christopher, earplugs might come in handy.)

Illinois is the center of the cicada emergence in the United States, the only state that will experience cicadas nearly everywhere and see two adjacent broods — Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood — come up from the soil at once. The dual emergence of the two groups of cicadas is happening for the first time since 1803, and expected to last about six weeks.

Any day now, scientists estimate, the state will be a carpet of buzzing, crawling, red-eyed insects.

Several children work around a table that is covered with construction paper, glue and other art supplies.

“What’s special about these two broods is that they cover almost the entirety of the state of Illinois,” said Allen Lawrance, associate curator of entomology at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago. “So for us in Illinois, you won’t be able to get away from them.”

Cicada mania is spreading around the state. Cicada fans are excitedly making plans to camp, hike or just enjoy the insects in their own backyards. Out-of-state visitors are driving or flying in from places where there will be fewer cicadas, or none at all. A cicada-themed public art project in Chicago will festoon the city with hundreds of ornate bug replicas.

And schools are preparing their students for the cicada emergence, hoping that education will both ease anxieties and wrap in a real-world entomology lesson.

“I’m trying to desensitize them a little bit,” said Jelena Todorovich, the art teacher at Cumberland, which is planning a schoolwide “Cicada Parade-A.” “It’s going to be real.”

People unnerved by the idea of a trillion cicadas crawling around half the country, covering lawns and driveways and crunching underfoot, may find the coming weeks revolting. But there is also fascination and delight, a fervor that carries an echo of the recent solar eclipse, which drew the attention of millions of Americans who stood in awe of a rare natural phenomenon.

“People say, ‘It’s a plague, it’s terrifying, they get in my hair,’” said Roger McMullan, who has written a graphic novel titled “Cicadapocalypse” and plans to fly to Illinois for the emergence. “But they don’t bite, they don’t sting, they’re not poisonous or venomous. They’re just these sweet little guys who hang out and suck tree sap.”

The cicada is no ordinary bug, say its biggest fans. It evokes nostalgia, they say, a soothing sound of summer, bringing a calm that borders on spiritual.

Nina Salem, the founder of the Insect Asylum, a small museum in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago that is making plaster cicadas in its basement, said that on the eve of the emergence, she had been mulling the cicada’s life, which is mostly spent underground.

Once the cicadas use their forelegs to tunnel out from the earth, they molt and then mate, the male cicadas making the familiar buzzing sound that can be overwhelmingly loud when it is at its peak. After mating, female cicadas make slits in tree branches and lay their eggs there. The eggs hatch, and tiny nymphs burrow into the soil, beginning the process over again.

Most of the time, the adult cicadas die after only a few weeks of experiencing life above ground, their bodies falling close to where they emerged.

“They spend their entire lives waiting for this one moment to be seen and heard and felt and experienced, and then we get to do that with them,” Ms. Salem said. “It’s so fleeting. It’s just really special. And then we get to walk around and pick them up like little treasures.”

Erica Kain, a German teacher in Sewickley, Pa., has booked plane tickets to Chicago in mid-May for herself and her teenage daughters, Caroline and Genevieve.

The girls spent much of their childhood in California, where they did not see cicadas, she said. But in 2016, on a drive in eastern Ohio, a cicada brood had recently emerged. The bugs were absolutely everywhere, she recalled.

“They were splatting against the windshield — it was so loud,” Ms. Kain said. “The girls had never experienced cicadas of any sort before. We all just loved it.”

On their planned family trip to Illinois this month, they intend to drive to central Illinois, to the place where the two cicada broods will nearly overlap — “a little locust Mason-Dixon line,” as Ms. Kain called it.

She cannot wait to get out of the car and let the sound of the cicadas envelop her.

“It reminds me of when you go to the symphony and you experience the vibrations of the instruments in the room, this high-pitched roar,” Ms. Kain said. “It’s like walking into an insect nightclub.”

When the cicadas will emerge from the ground is the subject of feverish online speculation.

Some cicada fans have taken to pushing meat thermometers into their backyard soil, waiting for the temperature to reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit at about six inches deep. Once that happens, the cicadas are expected to come out.

That fact has left some Illinois residents apprehensive.

A cicada brood that emerged when Trayce Zimmermann, a publicist in Chicago, was a child in the suburbs has haunted her ever since.

She remembers standing outside her house, gazing at the dark, slightly shifting layer of cicadas that covered the sidewalk. Some of the cicadas were alive, but many of them were dead and motionless, their red eyes large and vacant, Ms. Zimmermann recounted.

She and her younger brother, Jeff, were holding brooms, assigned to clean the sidewalk by sweeping the cicadas onto the grass.

“It was like snow, covering everything,” she said. “But it was bugs.”

Though she isn’t worried about many cicadas in West Town, her neighborhood near downtown Chicago, she visits her childhood home several times a week to care for her mother. There, she has already seen holes in the dirt near large, mature trees, a sure sign that cicadas are coming.

As a way of managing her cicada anxiety, Ms. Zimmermann has created T-shirts, replacing the four stars in the Chicago flag with cicadas.

At Cumberland Elementary in Des Plaines, cicada art has already been pasted up in the hallways, and every class in the school has received a cicada education.

Lynora Jensen, a master naturalist whose daughter teaches fourth grade at Cumberland, has been a regular presence at school, gently trying to calm worries and help the students get into the cicada spirit.

“For me, it’s unacceptable to be afraid,” she said. “Education helps them to not be afraid, and to be curious. We want to get the kids feeling good about it.”

Willa, one of the third graders at Cumberland, said she had heard a lot of students talk about how scary the cicadas can be. She has tried to spread the word that they’re friendly.

“They’re only bugs,” she said.
