Because this technology is so new, its output won’t be entirely accurate, and is no substitution for putting in the work yourself. The AI does the best it can with the information it’s given, which means it’s up to the job seeker to be both specific and accurate when inputting prompts, and to make any necessary adjustments to achieve a specific result.

If you plan to use ChatGPT for resume writing or crafting a cover letter, make sure you have a solid understanding of how to write both documents. After all, they’re a potential employer’s first impression of you; if you’re not well-represented because you relied on AI instead of your own skills, you’re not likely to get the job.   • This AI is very new technology and is certainly not foolproof. It’s constantly being tested and adjusted due to its newness.
  • It may accidentally generate inaccurate statements due to its limited knowledge of the world after 2021.
  • If you’re not proofreading carefully, you may gloss over some major errors. ChatGPT may generate content that is biased or harmful and it’s on you to catch those statements and not use them in your resume or cover letter. The AI may also repeat information between sections of a generated resume.
  • The AI works with the information it’s given. The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of the input.
  • If you’re not specific enough when entering your prompts, you will get vague, generalized output. Similarly, if your prompt is poorly formatted, the AI may not understand what you’re asking for.
  • ChatGPT may embellish some of your accomplishments. While it may be tempting to leave these in place, it’s never a good idea to lie about what you have and have not done.

This AI is not a replacement for doing the actual work yourself, but it can be a useful tool during the process of looking for a new job. Only you can truly know what you’ve achieved through your work and life experiences, and you’re the one who is best suited to crafting any type of resume or cover letter.

These might seem overly specific but if you’re not specific enough, you won’t get the response you’re looking for.

  • Your resume
  • The job description of the role you’re interested in
  • Information about what kind of tone you’d prefer

You can also ask the AI to review your cover letter for readability and help you get through a bout of writer’s block.

Prompts for these sorts of asks might look like:

  • Write a cover letter for a [position] role at [Company] in a professional tone. Use my resume and the job description as a reference.

These prompts may feel awkward to write, almost as though you’re explaining something to a small child. But the clearer and more specific you are, the more pleased you’re likely to be with the results.

It certainly has value but comes with a few caveats. Use ChatGPT with caution, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for grammatical errors .

Even if the hiring manager doesn’t read it, we’re advised to include one as a professional courtesy anyway.

No wonder the effort sometimes doesn’t seem worth it.

Wouldn’t it be great if cover letters could be whipped up quickly for jobs you’re interested in, without having to invest much time? Either way, you’d tick off the courtesy and introduction boxes, without all that effort going to waste should it not be read.

Well, there IS a way. Step forward AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Bing Chat, and Gemini (formerly Bard)!

We’ve been coaching job seekers for nearly twenty years in how to write effective cover letters. Our career coaches have tried and tested AI chatbots, originally trying to prove that humans are much better at it. Our conclusion? Yes, humans write great cover letters. But AI can also do an amazing (or even cough better) job.

In fact, AI is a fantastic method to produce cover letters quickly and to a high standard. If you’re not a confident letter writer, or you simply don’t have the time, AI will help you draft one that you would struggle to write on your own.

In this blog post, we’ll talk you through four very simple steps to do it. Our career coaches have played around with prompt wording to get the best combination and result as quickly as possible (you’re welcome).

For this exercise we’ll use ChatGPT, however the prompts will work in a similar way with other AI chatbots.

First things first

Before getting started, we decided to ask ChatGPT how to ensure a great end result.

“I would like you to create a cover letter for me. What can I do to ensure you create the best letter possible for me?”

Certainly! To help me create the best cover letter for you, here are some tips and information you can provide:

Job Description: Share the job description or provide key details about the position you’re applying for. This will help me tailor the letter to match the specific requirements and skills sought by the employer.

Your Skills and Qualifications: Highlight your key skills, qualifications, and experiences that are relevant to the job. Mention any specific achievements or projects that demonstrate your capabilities.

Company Information: If you have details about the company’s values, mission, or specific projects, share them. This allows me to align your cover letter with the company culture and goals.

Your Unique Selling Points: What makes you stand out from other candidates? Whether it’s a unique skill, experience, or personal quality, let me know so I can emphasize it in the letter.

Contact Information: Provide the recipient’s name and title if available. If you don’t have this information, it’s okay; I can still create a general cover letter.

Any Specific Requests or Criteria: If the job posting mentions any specific requirements or requests, inform me so that I can address them in the cover letter.

Tone and Style: Let me know if you have a preference for a formal or slightly more casual tone. Also, mention if there are any specific points you want to highlight or avoid.

Your Career Goals: If applicable, share a bit about your career goals and how this position aligns with them. This can add a personal touch to the cover letter.

Remember, the more details you provide, the better I can tailor the cover letter to your specific needs. Feel free to share as much information as you’re comfortable with!

So now that we know what will help ChatGPT to produce a great cover letter, let’s dive into the specifics. Before getting started, ensure you have your resume and the description of the job you’re applying for on hand. If you have any additional information about the company, such as its values, add these to the end of the job description document before we begin.

OK – ready? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Instruction Prompt

Enter the following starter prompt into ChatGPT:

“Please create a cover letter for me. I’ll provide my resume, and the job description of the role I’m applying for. In approximately 250 words, please explain why I’m a close fit. Use my resume to find details about my length of experience, key skills and qualifications relevant to the job description, as well as my unique selling points. Point out 1-2 achievements from my resume that align with the job requirements. Please make the letter concise, precise, and professionally conversational. Do you understand?”

ChatGPT will reply with something along the lines of:

Yes, I understand. Please provide your resume and the job description, and I’ll create a concise, precise, and professionally conversational cover letter for you.

Step 2: Paste your resume

Reply to ChatGPT with the following prompt:

“First I will share my resume. Then I will share the job description. OK?”

Absolutely, that works perfectly. Please share your resume, and once you’ve provided the job description, I’ll craft the cover letter for you.

Enter this response:

“Thank you. Here is my resume: [paste your resume here, then hit enter]”

Once you do that, ChatGPT will reply with something like:

Thank you for providing your comprehensive resume. Please share the job description for the role you’re applying for, and I’ll proceed to create a concise and effective cover letter for you.

Step 3: Paste the job description

Reply to ChatGPT:

“Thank you. Here is the job description: [paste the job description, then hit enter]”

Once you do this, ChatGPT will rapidly draft the cover letter based on your inputs (i.e. your resume and the job description).

Here’s the job description we used for this exercise:

Job Title: Business Transformation Manager Company: TechAdvantage Solutions Location: Madrid, Spain

Job Description:

TechAdvantage Solutions, a forward-thinking technology company in Spain, is actively seeking a strategic Business Transformation Manager. The cover letter is its own unique, dreaded genre of writing. In a few — often formulaic — paragraphs, job applicants must accomplish several things: prostrate themselves at the feet of hiring managers, extolling the virtues of whatever company to which they’re applying, but also brag about themselves without seeming too, well, braggy.

And after doing all of that work, there’s no telling whether a hiring manager will merely skim your letter or closely examine it to gauge your communication chops.

Now, job applicants are utilizing ChatGPT — a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence — to do the heavy lifting. Designed by the startup OpenAI , which released the current version of the technology for public testing in November 2022, ChatGPT has impressed the world with its ability to execute all manner of tasks, including writing a Taylor Swift song from the perspective of a tree and passing exams in law and business schools (albeit with poor grades).

But how good is ChatGPT at pretending to be a human? The Times interviewed five job seekers, who shared examples of old and new ChatGPT-written cover letters for comparison. (Several did not want to be identified by their full names out of fear of facing discrimination from potential employers.) One used the AI assistant to blast out job applications in volume, another used it to improve her non-native English, and others used it to personalize their portfolios. Most started with a simple prompt — “Write me a cover letter” — and were blown away by the results.

‘It wrote better than I ever could.’

Jesse landed his current job as an automotive service advisor in Vancouver, Canada, using a cover letter written by ChatGPT.

Letter No. 1: Is this written by a human or AI?

“In my current role as a creative planner, I have gained valuable experience in developing marketing campaigns, including the creation and development of a brand. In a past role, I worked with clients in the automotive, lifestyle, travel, fashion, music, indie film, and with small to medium scale businesses. My marketing and design skills have allowed me to successfully reach and engage target audiences across a diverse range of industries.” Scroll to bottom for correct answer.

“It wrote better than I ever could,” he said. “A simple cover letter would take me a week to write.”

Like many, Jesse, 34, found it difficult to write about himself and explain his skill set to employers. He used ChatGPT to spruce up his resume first, and then told it to use the resume to create a cover letter based on job descriptions for marketing, product consulting and other roles in the auto industry.

But, he warned, it’s still important to double-check everything the bot writes. ChatGPT has developed a reputation for occasionally spewing falsehoods with full confidence, and it could do the same to you.

For Jesse’s cover letters, ChatGPT would sometimes add random facts about him that were incorrect, such as stating he was a supervisor in a previous position when he merely took on a “supervisory role.”

It often took a back-and-forth exchange with ChatGPT to rewrite certain paragraphs or sentences and land on a cover letter he liked, Jesse said. He also made small manual edits, such as switching out certain words. And although it saved him work, there was one additional step involved: running the letter through online AI scanners that have popped up to detect AI-generated writing to make sure it passed the test in case companies checked.

We interviewed ChatGPT, a chatbot that has garnered widespread attention for its ability to mimic human conversation. Then we brought in experts in artificial intelligence and the arts to analyze ChatGPT’s responses.

“The aspects of using AI to assist — it’s a tool,” he said. “Imagine you had an expert next to you telling you how to get better. I’ve been able to work a lot faster than when I was working with people on designing things.”

‘Why not? A bot reads them; I’ll get a bot to write them.’

For Austin, Texas-based J, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, tapping ChatGPT to write their cover letters was a no-brainer.

Letter No. 2: Is this written by a human or AI?

“I am impressed with [Company X’s] mission to help the 46 million Americans burdened by student debt save money through smart, algorithm-based recommendations. I am drawn to the company’s commitment to helping all borrowers improve their financial health through better repayment strategies, and I am excited about the opportunity to work with a team of world-class investors and help generate new business and engage individual users after they join [Company X].” Scroll to bottom for correct answer.

“Why not? A bot reads them,” they said, referring to cover letter and resume-scanning software that many employers use to filter out candidates. “I’ll get a bot to write them.”

J, 28, was laid off from their design job at a financial services tech company in June and moved to freelance contracts for a few months. Now, they’re looking to get back into a full-time, senior-level product design position. Normally, a job application that requires a cover letter would be an automatic skip. But now J generates one in a matter of minutes, instructing ChatGPT to pull personal examples from a resume. After a few minutes of tweaking, it’s ready to be submitted. Although J hasn’t necessarily noticed an increase in the amount of callbacks received, the tool has let them throw their hat in the ring for more positions than before.

“Cover letters in general have always sounded to me like a bot [wrote them], like they’re very impersonal, the professional way of speaking,” J said. “Why do I have to write fan fiction about why I want to work for you? I just need money to pay my bills.”

“I’m a creator with experience working on daily-driven post-strategies for social media and as a videographer making documentaries and corporate videos for startups and big organisations. My last work was as social content creator and marketing executive. I helped rebuild their social media platforms by creating engaging visual content that resonated with audiences. “If you don’t know English [well], a lot of doors can be closed for you,” Martinez, 37, said. In the multistep job application process, during which candidates’ fates are at the often-subjective whims of a hiring manager, she believes it’s important to use technology to her advantage.

Martinez uses a prompt she found on a LinkedIn post advising people to try out ChatGPT for their cover letters: “Write me a personalized cover letter explaining why I’m a great candidate for this job. The job title is [Job Title], the company is [Company Name], and here is the job description: [Paste Job Description].”

While editing the cover letter, she made sure to personalize it and delete sentences she wouldn’t say or that weren’t applicable to her. Martinez said the process also improves her writing ability in the long run. If she’s struggling with writing a specific sentence, she also gives ChatGPT prompts to make her writing more “polished” or asks it to rewrite what she has.

“It is like a virtual friend that will give you an accurate answer and push you to get the best version,” said Martinez, who has already used the ChatGPT-written letter to apply for 15 jobs in content creation and social media management since she started her job search in January.

‘I was pretty amazed.’

One of the first things Zachary asked ChatGPT to do was to practice Spanish with him. Another was to write an episode of “The Office” set in 2050. ChatGPT did both — and surprisingly well.

“Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a strong ability to identify and create new qualified opportunities. My experience with cold calling, email campaigns, and LinkedIn outreach has allowed me to build a pipeline of targeted prospects and generate interest in the services I have represented. I have also honed my executive presence and communication skills, allowing me to conduct high-level consultative conversations with C-level executives and book qualified meetings for the sales team.” Scroll to bottom for correct answer.

Now, he’s integrated it into his daily job in Southern California working in tech sales and using it in his job search as he tries to transition into recruiting.

For cover letters, he gave ChatGPT a job description and a couple of sentences with the titles of previous roles he’s been in.

“It basically filled in the knowledge of what it knows those positions do,” Zachary said. “I was pretty amazed.”

Afterward, he’ll edit to remove any filler material or sentences that are too “on the nose,” such as regurgitating a company’s values or mentioning a company’s reputation as a “top leader for business women.”

He’s also using it to rework his resume, giving it paragraphs he’s written and telling ChatGPT: “Make this more concise.”

At work, he uses it to shorten long-winded emails and generate cold call scripts for contacting potential clients. He’s also seen cases in which, to prep for an interview, job seekers ask ChatGPT to pretend to be a hiring manager at a company they’re reaching out to and identify the top three problems that person faces.

“I think it’s a tool that we can use to make ourselves more efficient,” he said.

‘Is it plagiarism? I don’t even know.’

Cynthia Clifford has also fully embraced the use of ChatGPT in her teaching job at an international school in Vietnam and as she seeks to transition industries and find an opportunity in data analytics.

“I know [Company X] is committed to igniting learning breakthroughs with rigorous teacher-friendly, inclusive, student-centered, problem-based courses in technology-rich, discourse-based classrooms. I have extensive classroom teaching experience, am highly motivated, and can develop courses for [Company X] because I have already developed engaging courses involving a multitude of learning targets as a classroom teacher and have developed material for online learning during three years of virtual teaching. I can drive results in the areas of collaborative curriculum development.” Scroll to bottom for correct answer.

She first heard about it from a classmate in a data analytics accelerator program who mentioned using ChatGPT for his cover letters in early December, right after it was released.

“As soon as the class was over, I made a beeline and got an account,” Clifford said. “That’s how my report card comments got written this semester.”

For her cover letter, Clifford said she’s making substantial edits to the ChatGPT-written drafts that she’s generated using job descriptions, but it does “a really good job of pulling out some of the highlights of the job description, the keywords and the things you might want to highlight.”

She has also fed ChatGPT cover letters that she has already written on her own and asked it to tailor it more closely to a job description.

“Is it plagiarism? I don’t even know,” she said. “Plagiarism generally is copying somebody else’s work. If you’re copying the work of a computer, I don’t know if it’s plagiarism.”

The technology has been a big help as she prepares to throw herself into the job search for data analytics positions, including revising her resume and drafting messages for cold-contacting people on LinkedIn. She has even used it to generate ideas for portfolio projects demonstrating her ability to use SQL, an important programming language in data analytics.

People Are Using ChatGPT To Write Their Job Applications. Should You?

Cover letters and resumes can be tedious to write. ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot, can write them quickly. But should you use them in your job hunt?

In today’s competitive job market , candidates need to make a strong first impression to stand out from the pack. And for an increasing number of job seekers, that means using an artificially intelligent chatbot to write and edit their job applications. ChatGPT , which was made free and publicly available by the artificial intelligence lab OpenAI in November, is a chatbot powered by machine learning. People can ask it questions and it provides a quick response based on “a massive dataset of human-generated text,” as ChatGPT will tell you. ChatGPT’s capabilities are remarkable and are already transforming how students write essays and how teachers grade and plan lessons . It can write surprising raps, eerie poems and detailed cover letters based on information you give it. It gives people answers that are not just grammatically correct, but with an understanding of how hiring managers want to read it.

As an example, I asked ChatGPT to write a cover letter for a barista role that highlighted a passion for coffee and customer service experience. In less than a minute, I had a detailed response:

For job-hunting, you can also tailor ChatGPT answers to your unique needs by copying and pasting your resume into its chat feature and asking it to build cover letters based on that resume and the role you want. “The more specific you are to ChatGPT, then the better your results will be,” said Gabrielle Woody , a university recruiter for the financial software company Intuit. “When I type ‘I am a job seeker looking for a software engineering role at a startup. How can I make my application stand out’ into ChatGPT, it comes with recommendations of how to highlight skills, technologies and industries that one has previously worked in.“ Ashley Pancoast, a Wilmington, North Carolina-based data analyst who is currently job hunting, has asked ChatGPT questions like, “How can the resume be improved to match the job description?” to help tailor their cover letter and resume. Pancoast said the number of interview callbacks they have gotten has increased using ChatGPT for help. They see ChatGPT as “if it were a professional I was consulting with to give me feedback.” “I mostly ask it for key competencies that are listed in the job description, and then for it to ... summarize things easily for me,” Pancoast said. “Since job searching takes so much time, it just makes things go quicker.“ For Pancoast, ChatGPT is helpful at generating potential job interview questions they have not thought about, too. “If I have questions, I can ask it, ‘Can you explain this key competency more? What it would it look like in the job?’ I’ve also asked it, ‘What interview questions might they ask me for this job description and I can think through ‘OK where does my experience line up with that?’”

Recruiters think it can be a good starting point. But they caution about using it without edits.

The results of ChatGPT-written job applications are uncanny and can fool humans. There have already been instances where companies have recommended people using ChatGPT-generated job applications for a job interview. “I suspect a lot more candidates are using it and honestly, I couldn’t tell you who is and isn’t right now –– I think that’s part of the power of using a tool like this that will build responses around your specific examples,” said Bonnie Dilber, a recruiting manager with app-automation company Zapier. Jerry Lee, the COO for a job-search coaching firm, claimed on TikTok that he got seven callbacks in two days after he used ChatGPT to write applications for 190 jobs.

Some job seekers see using ChatGPT as a way to level the playing field in a job-search process that can seem largely out of a candidate’s control. As one comment to Lee’s TikTok reads: “They use automation so can we.” Recruiters said they were fine with job seekers using ChatGPT to automate parts of an application, as long as they add in their own voice. “So much of recruiting leverages standard templates and automated responses, schedulers, etc.,” Dilber said. “I love any tool that will help a job-seeker bring the same approach to their search. But just as a great recruiter starts with the templates and then tweaks for the individual role and candidate, a great job applicant should do the same.” Tejal Wagadia, a recruiter for a major tech company, said ChatGPT’s cover letters can be a good starting point. But in the end, it is a computer program that cannot go beyond repeating what you say in a resume. And one of the biggest mistakes you can make in a cover letter, experts say, is to be generic and boring as if you just copy-pasted a template. Wagadia said when she tried putting in specific resume and cover letter templates to tailor ChatGPT’s response, it still created a generic cover letter that would not be helpful for a recruiter evaluating a candidate. “The cover letter that it gave me was full of fluff words,” Wagadia said. “It is saying words like ‘dedicated,’ ’highly efficient, ‘productive,’ ‘detail-oriented’ – things that we consider nonquantifiable words that don’t really add anything to your resume.” In this way, Wagadia said the fact that ChatGPT can do a good job of writing subjective cover letters demonstrates the limit of using them to evaluate candidates. She personally finds that a portfolio of someone’s work can give recruiters better insight into a candidate’s writing style. Beyond its use of subjective fluff words, a drawback to ChatGPT is that it cannot fact-check itself. As ChatGPT explains to users: “T he system may occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information and produce offensive or biased content. It is not intended to give advice.” But its answers can surprise you, as they did for me. When I asked ChatGPT to write me a poem on how job seekers are using ChatGPT for their cover letters, it immediately wrote back to me, in part:

“It’s a tool that’s worth a try, To make your words fly high, No more writer’s block, no more sigh, Your letters will be sharp, like a spy. But don’t forget to add your touch, Make it personal, that’s the key, Don’t let the machine do too much.”

Whether you are an AI-powered chatbot or a job seeker, these are good words of moderation to live by when job-hunting. At best, the AI tool can refine your answers and give you writing inspiration. But ChatGPT cannot yet fully replace your own voice. It may help you get a callback, but you will have to be the one doing the job interviews. Take it from Pancoast, who has asked ChatGPT to point out strengths in their job application answers and to note which qualifications Pancoast may not have mentioned. Pancoast said they appreciate the pep talks ChatGPT gives, but also are aware of the limitations in its answers. “It doesn’t know me,” Pancoast said. “It has my resume, it has my cover letter, it doesn’t have my full life experience, but again, it just gives you things to think about.”

Job seekers are using ChatGPT to save time on the most annoying part of an application: the cover letter

Some people are using it to secure those jobs in the first place by having OpenAI's chatbot write their cover letters . 

As the bot's influence quickly began to spread across social media, many job hunters realized that the normally time-consuming process of searching for, and applying to, jobs could be made a lot shorter with the help of ChatGPT.

Since the chatbot first launched in November, garnering over 1 million users, people excitedly used it for business advice and essay writing — and now, cover letters are in the mix.

As one Twitter user put it, she is "extremely impressed/horrified (shooketh?) at how well ChatGPT rendered a cover letter template for an academic job" after she asked the bot to write a cover letter for an assistant professor position.

And she's not alone. Many other users have taken to social media to comment on the benefits the chatbot has when it comes to the job process — particularly because it helps them avoid writing a cover letter, a usually dreaded element of job applications.

One Twitter user called the new development a "game changer," and another said that if people "hate to write cover letters" as much as he does, applicants can "copy paste the job description and a summary of your experiences to #ChatGPT , ask it to write a cover letter and see the magic : a customized cover letter for that specific job vacancy in seconds."

A different user called cover letters "such a waste of time. I'm having chatgpt write any I need in the future," he wrote. 

Over on TikTok, potential applicants are guiding fellow jobseekers to put full job descriptions into the chatbot, and asking ChatGPT to write a cover letter based on those needs.

"The real key with this tool, with ChatGPT, is to refine it," one user advises , saying that applicants should have the chatbot keep editing letters with personal experience and adjusting for tone.

Chatter around ChatGPT cover letters has surfaced lots of debate on the topic

The debate around whether cover letters should be nixed altogether because they could introduce more room for bias aside, using cover letters written by ChatGPT to secure a new job is also controversial.

Alison Green, who created the website Ask a Manager, told Money that people should think carefully before asking a chatbot to write part of their job application — especially depending on the field of work.

"If you submit a sample of your writing for a writing-heavy job and you didn't write it — I mean, you're just setting yourself up for disaster," Green said.

"The question is less about the ethics and more about whether it's smart. And I would say no, it's really dumb," Green added. What makes a cover letter stand out is largely personal anecdotes and experiences the applicant can bring — and a robot can't make those things up.

The chatbot itself seems to agree. When Insider asked how good it is at writing cover letters, ChatGPT said: "As a language model, I can assist you in writing a cover letter by providing suggestions and guidance on content, language, and tone, but I cannot claim to have personal experiences or emotions to include in a cover letter. The quality of the cover letter ultimately depends on the information you provide and how well it is tailored to the specific job and company you are applying for." 

The progression of ChatGPT, and how employers and prospective employees will use it, remains uncertain. But as Insider has previously reported , workers are already using the bot to make their current jobs just a bit easier. Rather than Googling, workers are using the bot to ask simple questions, and it's also helpful with creating a daily work schedule and managing tasks.

"It's absolutely true that AI applications like ChatGPT can very much improve workers' lives," Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute who has researched the impact of AI on the workforce, told Insider.

Once you’re logged in to the Selzy platform, choose Chatbots in the left menu, and then click Add scenario in the middle of the screen. In the opened scenario, click on the Merge button in the upper right:
